Some alternatives could be better. :)
@Lord_ViLyam you can propose them here, if you want to!
@[email protected] So, Linux Is perfect, but for phones there is /e/OS.
Browser also could be Qwant.
Search engine MetaGer or Mojeek.
Threema Is cool.
@Lord_ViLyam @heisinen Mojeek is UK based so outside EU space. I don't see a Qwant browser for PC and on mobile Vivaldi is a better choice.
I use only mobile, so sorry for misumderstanding. I feel UK like still part od Europe, So for mi it don't matter UK, Switzerland, Ukraine or EU. But I'll chceck Vivaldi.

@The_Escapist Das ist ein guter Verhleich. Danke!
@heisinen
Mistral just seems (from the site) to be an LLM. What about neural networks, or genetic algorithms, or symbolic AI, or the many other areas within the AI field?
@heisinen we keep confusing Europe and EU; I’m not quite certain that the Swiss are bound by EU laws
@GuillaumeRossolini they are a part of EFTA. So basicly they are in the EU, but without any voting rights.
@heisinen @GuillaumeRossolini I think there are some differences, in particular for Switzerland because they are not part of the EEA.

@zbrando @heisinen it’s unclear to me where they stand exactly, but I’d venture a guess that their agreements, being economic in nature, don’t cover citizen protections of a legal nature

@heisinen Nice list! If you want a VPN or cloud storage ya know where we are 😉
@heisinen maps -> HereWeGo or TomTom. Uber -> FreeNow. Cloud storage -> IONOS Hidrive or Icedrive. For messaging I use Viber. It's Japanese, but comparable functionality to WhatsApp (and free/ad sorted).
@heisinen search -> @Mojeek or if you're looking for a DuckDuckGo alternative there is StartPage (default search engine for the Vivaldi browser)
@pheasant_plucker @Mojeek start page, after some redditors from r/#BuyFromEU made some digging, turns out not to be European. Stay with #Qwant or #Ecosia. The best what we’ve got right now. They have joined forces to make a #European search engine.
@heisinen @Mojeek mojeek is British - unless you don't count Britain as part of Europe?
@pheasant_plucker @heisinen UK withdraw from EU and EEA so can't guarantee the same law protection like GDPR. Also, UK is member of the Five Eyes.
@zbrando @heisinen GDPR is incorporated into UK law
@pheasant_plucker @heisinen Thank you for the clarification, I read that they were thinking to opt out but clearly IR didn't happen.
@zbrando @heisinen Certain right wingers would like that but they created so much other chaos that they never got round to it before losing the election. Could happen in the future though.
@heisinen @pheasant_plucker does that make Vivaldi not European then? Qwant and Ecosia are still using Bing and Google
@heisinen @pheasant_plucker There's also https://metager.org (@MetaGer) which allows you to get combined results from the Google, Bing and Mojeek indexes on one result page. (And an integration of the European OpenWebIndex is in the works.)

@heisinen @pheasant_plucker @Mojeek

The Reddit users dug too superficial. Otherwise they would have stumbled over a certain Politico article about Qwant.

Or to word it with a Star Wars quote: "You were the Chosen One! It was said that you would destroy the Sith, not join them!"

@domodak @Mojeek @pheasant_plucker this article is quite old. I'd like to know what the situation looks like nowadays, when much more people are using the web browser. Also, the question remains: "what else?"
@heisinen Great list! I recently made the switch to Threema from Messenger and Whatsapp, and loving it so far! I'm using the Ecosia web browser, but considering switching to Vivaldi, as I've been hearing a lot of good things about it.

@heisinen for me #DAVID made by german Company #Tobit is a very good alternative for #Microsoft #Outlook and #Exchange.
