@Tutanota email is Tutanota.

Calendar is self-hosted.

Browser is Zen Browser but it is not EU based. Still better than chosing Vivaldi imo. Never tried Mullvad but I guess it's good!

Search engine is @Mojeek ♥️

@feudjais @Tutanota @Mojeek could you tell me more about zen browser…is it free and does it mine information? Thanks

@lillyfinch @Tutanota @Mojeek it is free software.

As for privacy, I recommend you read https://zen-browser.app/privacy-policy/

TL;DR: they don't sell, they don't collect, they don't track. Telemetry is opt-in. Crash reports can be sent to Mozilla.

Your privacy is our priority. This Privacy Policy outlines the types of personal information we collect, how we use it, and the steps we take to protect your data when you use Zen.

@feudjais @Tutanota @Mojeek thank you. Appreciate you getting back. I will check into it looking for a new browser trying to fortify my online presence.
@Tutanota putting Qwant in there is a serious joke
@tournesol @Tutanota Qwant works well now. The gap will google is closing.
@FrancoisPrague @tournesol @Tutanota Are Qwant and Ecosia both Bing front ends? I read that Qwant is planning its own index, but even last week it was delivering me Bing results.
@jackyan @FrancoisPrague @Tutanota yeah that's the gist, and Qwant continue to make no advancement to that goal since 2013 but they'll get it soon … ish
@tournesol @Tutanota @FrancoisPrague I had to go to @Mojeek though thatʼs in the UK—about the only occidental search engine with its own index outside of US Big Tech that I know of.
@jackyan @Tutanota @FrancoisPrague @Mojeek yeah, and they are actually working on it, I love mojeek
@tournesol @Tutanota @FrancoisPrague @Mojeek J'attends avec impatience! Would love to see a real choice out there.
Small correction. Proton is not EU based, but it’s European. Proton is a Swiss company. Highly recommend it tho
@Tutanota Are Proton Calendar & Vivaldi EU based? Switzerland and Norway, part of EU? Don't think so.
@apan @Tutanota no member states of the EU, but still European
@apan they did say "European tools", the EU logo is misleading though.
@Tutanota
@Tutanota proton is not eu based
@amackif @Tutanota OP said European, not EU. Norway and Switzerland are both European countries. Check https://european-alternatives.eu/

European Alternatives

@FrodeO @Tutanota and on the attached image, #proton is in #EU category.

I don't mind that proton is in the list, it's actually probably one of the best google alternatives. Just label it accordingly since we need to know what we support. And I'm not really interested in supporting something that's not EU. Or Hungary.

@amackif they said europe, not specifically eu members.
@Tutanota original post doesn't mention EU.
@Tutanota I'm quite happy with both Vivaldi's browser (nerds, either explain to me what's going on with Mozilla or shush) and Tuta email.

@Tutanota email & calendar : @Tutanota
browser : @librewolf & @floorp
Search : #Zotop (searx) & @Mojeek

qwant, ecosia, vivaldi & proton are to be absolutely avoided

@tekhne @Tutanota @librewolf @floorp @Mojeek I heard that proton was starting to promote the new “administration,” but what’s going on with Vivaldi? I haven’t heard any news about that one yet
@mexiquin @Tutanota The comparison below shows that Vivaldi really isn't one of the best secure browsers, and should be avoided ...

@Tutanota Ecosia is not privacy friendly as far as I'm aware. I don't know anything about Qwant. Sadly, the EU based search engine options are quite sparse.
@Tutanota Vivaldi and Qwant are great. I will give a try to Tuta!
@Tutanota On the subject of browsers: I'm not sure whether it's more important to me that the browser comes from the EU or Europe or whether the browser uses a framework that comes from the US (Vivaldi and Mullvad -> Chromium).
@sven21 @Tutanota
Well.. both Chromium and Firefox are american. Mullvad isn´t based off Chromium tho!
@brokenlight @Tutanota True, but using Firefox as a framework, which is also a US-American foundation...I think you understand the problem I have :D
@sven21 @Tutanota
Sure, a real alternative doesn't exist as far as I know
@Tutanota proud Tuta user ☺️
@Tutanota In the EU they use O365 not Google.

@Tutanota

Ditch all big tech and go open source and federated where possible!

Malte Engeler (@[email protected])

If your criticism of "big tech" is merely a result of the unhappiness about the fact that Meta, Google and Microsoft aren't EU-corporations you are missing the point. There is nothing that indicates that SAP or Deutsche Telekom would hesitate a second at the chance of becoming equally violent and exploitative forces. The solution to Big Tech isn't EU Big Tech. It's de-commercialisation and democratization of tech.

@Tutanota

Yeah, NO.

Proton is a trumped company, with their CEO loudly celebrating rhe fascist taking power.

Proton is a Trump Ally.

If this were about the environment this would be called greenwashing. In greenwashing they paint carbon fuel as green because they bought some trees.

I don't know what to call this? Betrayal? Nazi washing? A lie?

Makes me COMPLETELY doubt the recommended apps, and Tuta.

Anyone have deeoer, clearer, info on this error?

@Tutanota Thank you. I've been searching for alternatives and, I guess since I'm in the U.S. using Google mostly, I had never heard of these. I'm going to try them out. Thanks again.
@rowenodes Glad to hear. Any questions, let us know!

@Tutanota I have succeeded in getting Nextcloud up and running. So now I have a replacement for Dropbox, Google suite including, Google Photos and I also use it for my new (not gmail) email. And for the people on my Nextcloud server, the chat/phone/video call software called Nextcloud Talk is really good.

It was not easy, but now it seems to run really well. I made it work in NixOs, and can recommend it. Write if you are interested in the "configuration.nix".

@Tutanota @trendytoots ecosia is powered by Bing which is us based to my knowledge
@Tutanota @trendytoots in fact ecosia delivers a combination of search results from Yahoo!, Google,Bing and Wikipedia. It also uses chatGPT for its AI. All USA based!

@Tutanota

All European here:

Browser - Waterfox (UK)
Search - Mojeek (UK)
Email - Tutanota (Germany)
Calendar - Tutanota (Germany)
Drive - self-hosted

@Tutanota Would not expect any Proton's service appering here 😂 Respect for that Tuta..
@Tutanota Proton Mail, Calendar, Pass, VPN and Drive.
@Tutanota I use TutaMail for my private mails, ProtonMail for work and Disroot for family; Iceraven, Ironfox and Librewolf browsers; calendar on paper; Disroot's SearX and Swisscows as search
@Tutanota Search: Startpage.com (Netherlands) Translation: DeepL.com (Germany).
@Tutanota Bing and Bing are not based on Europe

@Tutanota Thank you for this overview.

Looking at the comments there seems to be a little misunderstanding about the definition of Europe and the EU. They are 'almost' the same but not 'quite' the same. Choosing a European alternative is good, finding an alternative by an actual EU based company is even better.

@Tutanota not everything "american-built" is bad. it might be worth checking out. what is too old which is european instead. agreed with the picture but only from android. not totally. not defending "american high tech". i don't know where some of you come from. but it's difficult to avoid gmail.

@clear2ooo

> but it's difficult to avoid gmail.

It's not, do give us a try. 😉

@Tutanota I say Americans should choose this too!

@Tutanota

We Europeans forgot how strong we are. NO MORE!

@Tutanota

I really, *really* wish people would not promote European tools as superior to American tools from a privacy standpoint after the EU tried to ban any encryption they couldn't backdoor under the guise of preventing distribution of CSAM
