Desi OSTs I love

Before I ever watched a #KDrama, #JDrama, #CDrama or #TWDrama, I'd watched around 400 films from India, more than 95% Hindi.

The "1 a day" thread on OSTs from East Asia showed me how much even a limited grasp of lyrics can affect the way songs stick, so I'm starting a very personal daily thread celebrating songs from the land of my fathers and of 10% of my DNA – a nice desimal fraction 😂

Lagaan was one of the first Hindi movies I bought, and this is my wife's favourite Bollywood dance number. Gracy Singh's acting career never really took off, but she was a truly fine dancer, who opened a dance studio after leaving acting. Much like my #KDrama bias Wang Ji Won also did

Continuing with songs connected to my wife, this one is her FAVOURITE 'Hindi' song, one she loves cranking up the volume for, this has a famous line that I love "jiski zubaan Urdu ki tarah" – "whose speech ('tongue') is like Urdu" – a language I knew of before I went school because my single parent Dad had learned it when he was at school, and taught me to count to ten in it.

More #Urdu , this song is FOR my wife.
When I 1st heard a bit of it in DDLJ, I'd only been married 11 years & didn't grok the words. By the time I saw the film it's from, I'd been married 20 years, DID grok it, & sung it to my wife I've since sung it to her often, (probably spousal abuse), as the lyrics (which I translated for her, GIYF) get more true with the passing of "Waqt" (time) The first of MANY songs in my list with lyrics by Sahir Ludhianvi #Bollywood

I first watched this film because of the title.
1947 was the year of Partition, the year (and the reason) my grandfather took his family from Karachi to Auckland. The film was also my introduction to Nandita Das, an actor, director and activist whom I admire and respect. ARR's plaintive hymn is a perfect fit for the film. in tone and theme

A STARK contrast to day 7's song in mood, this one too reminds me of my family, with several mentions of U.P. (Uttar Pradesh), where my father and grandmother were born. It was also the first Hindi film I watched in which NONE of its three leads were Indian-born (Hong Kong, Wisconsin, Pakistan)

Day 8's song was "Madhubala", named in honour of a famous actor, the one wearing the orange dupatta in this video from the 1960 film Mughal-e-Azam (I hate colorisation, but it makes pointing her out easier) . She's not the reason I love this song, but more on that later 😀

One of the two singers in Day 9's song was Lata Mangeshkar. When I started watching Hindi films, she was already well past her vocal prime, but was still the default voice for songs picturised on female actors, regardless of their age. This haunting song is from her prime, in 1949

Eulogised by Cornershop, Lata Mangeshkar's younger sister Asha Bhosle is my favourite of the two, and she recorded many songs with Shamshad Begum (the other singer from Day 9's song). Here's the first of two songs featuring them both, though I will resist making this playlist actually brimful of Asha.

This Asha/Shamshad duet is the second qawwali in the list, and the second video featuring Waheeda Rehman (on the the left in the thumbnail). A true icon of Hindi cinema "jiski zubaan Urdu ki tarah", she's a noted defender of that language. In adding the word 'qawwali' to my header pic, I found out how tricky mixing RTL and LTR scripts can be

Great chemistry was NOT a highlight of Mausam, a film in which Shahid starred with Sonam Kapoor, a very distant cousin of his ex, Kareena. Another SRK/Kajol classic, by the time I saw DDLJ (Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge) it had already been showing in continuously at least one cinema in India for more than 10 years. This song is a "great" example of Lata's late-career voice being incongruously paired with a much younger actor, imo.

Filmi qawwalis 'come from' Sufi religious qawwalis, like this one. Devout AND catchy, from my favourite Salman Khan film. This film shot in India about cross-border antics reminds me of my UP-born Dad who grew up near where this song is set in (now) Pakistan. Still with family: When I was a kid, my little sister used to write to a great-aunt living in Kolkata. That city is the setting for this Hindi film, an adaptation of a Bengali novel, with the music composed by a famous Bengali composer and lyricist. The repeated line "main ro padungi" - "I will (have to) cry" nicely sums up why I think of Bengali as the Russian of India (cf Devdas, & Satyajit Roy 's Apu trilogy). LOVE this song though

My Dad grew up in Punjab ("5 rivers"),tried to teach me them as a kid & could name them all 70 years later. ALL my bosses are Punjabi, and when we moved into our current home 6 years ago 70% of the block was Punjabi (~50% now).

Which makes this very Punjabi song both apt and ironic. Apt because Sadi Gali "our street" IS Punjabi, ironic because I have almost no Punjabi #Bollywood #HindiCinema #Punjabi

Bringing Punjabi and Urdu together, my favourite qawwali was written by an Urdu poet and sung by (among others) a Punjabi singer, Mohammed Rafi. The lyrics include both languages, too. My favourite song from my favourite film,, from anywhere and anywhen.

The only film I own a copy of the dialogues of – a beautiful physical book with the dialogue in two(3?) languages and four scripts.
A line from this song is in my profile, & the last verse sums up my view of the world perfectly, which is why its opening lines are on a t-shirt I had printed.
