An Apple share pays around $0.35 dividend a quarter (I think, I held 2 until recently) so say $1.40 per year … so why is each share worth $239 dollars? You’d have to own said share for 170 years to make your money back (maybe half that based on inflation). I clearly don’t understand economics or markets but in the current climate it seems that real value rests more in real things that something artificial that a bunch of rich thugs can manipulate

It also represents a portion of the total assets of the company. On winding up of the company, you will be paid 2/nth of the assets after discharge of all obligations (where n is the total number of shares). Apple's assets are, at least on paper, impressive. The price of the share is meant to reflect the market's valuation of the company. There I agree with you. It represents how traders predict the next sucker's guess at the third sucker's guess at...

Crypto is not backed by anything but greed and the next one to buy in, though, while currencies are backed by the labor of people in a state and their central banks. All reality is only in our minds - there is no spoon :)
