A straight white guy friend was complaining about not being able to find any gaming groups for WoW that weren't full of MAGA assholes. He said he keeps joining guilds with older (60+) casual gamers like himself because he can't keep up with the kids, and he'll start to make friends, but then they will reveal themselves to be Trump-lovers. He asked, "What am I doing wrong?"

I said, "First of all, your screen name is Russian. Leftys are gonna be wary of that, and the Alt-right loves it.
Second, you should put some social signals in your bio, like pronouns."

"Okay, but how do I tell people I'm cool, but I'm not gay or trans?"
I explained to him what "cis" and "ally" mean. He had never heard of this before, which showed me what kind of online spaces he was landing in.

Next, I said, "Look for the furries."
"But, I'm not a furry?"
"Yes, but the presence of furries are like lichen. They are a sign of a healthy ecosystem."

This was about 3 months ago. Now, he tells me he joined a guild labeled as LGBTQ-friendly and has made several new cool friends. He says, "I thought they would be talking about sex all the time but it's just a regular group." He mentioned that there are many women and PoC in the group too, and "Everyone's so nice on dungeon runs, telling people they did a good job and being supportive, sharing loot."

I didn't tell him that this is what the whole world would be like without patriarchal toxic masculinity, because I think he figured it out himself.

@Cat_LeFey I love that furries have gone from "ew cringe" to "they're the lichens of a healthy social ecosystem" 😂 it's true too

Edit: please be nice to them

@Crazypedia @Cat_LeFey Sorry did you say lichens or lycans?
@leonerd @Crazypedia @Cat_LeFey "Yes, but the presence of lycans are like lichen. They are a sign of a healthy ecosystem."

@zvavybir @leonerd @Crazypedia @Cat_LeFey

Yes; they've been known for "causing a trophic cascade of [positive] ecological change, including helping to increase beaver populations and bring back aspen, and vegetation."

(And yes, naturally, they are furry! 🐺 )

One tells you where the sun goes, the other tells you where the moon goes.

@Crazypedia @Cat_LeFey Actually in my school that I used to go to before I turned 18 you actually got suspended for being a furry or even talking about it tbh
@snow @Crazypedia @Cat_LeFey that doesn't sound like a healthy social ecosystem!

@Crazypedia @Cat_LeFey I think it's because they did a good job kicking Nazi furs out of their spaces before it was on the radar of others.

I admit to having a negative opinion of them in the 00s era, due to copyright worship and bigoted furs.

@Crazypedia @Cat_LeFey The ones I’ve met have mostly all been really cool
@Crazypedia @Cat_LeFey yeah, it is really nice to see furries mentioned in this context in so many places in recent years.
We kinda washed up in the furry fandom back in the early 90s and never left; to this day, I think it's the single best bit of luck we've ever had :)
@Crazypedia @Cat_LeFey the cringe itself was a symptom of the pollution

@Cat_LeFey

"Yes, but the presence of furries are like lichen. They are a sign of a healthy ecosystem."

...this now lives rent free in my memory - thank you :D

@Cat_LeFey I love the idea that if you see furries that means it’s a healthy community lmfao
@Cat_LeFey who’s cutting onions over here?

@Cat_LeFey true, true.

I can only attest to that from my own experience...

@Cat_LeFey
I'm so lucky I speedran this discovery for myself as a cis-het 20-something in 90s London, by taking refuge from toxic hookup culture in the gay-dominated Trance scene.
I certainly didn't think it would be all about sex, but I _did_ think I'd be suspect and kept on the outer. Instead, those communities quickly figured out I was marginalised and looking for somewhere safe, and provided that safety without judgement.
@Cat_LeFey Instead of “Look for the helpers.” it shall be “Look for the Furries.” I love this. The world is evolving!

@Cat_LeFey

I don’t require folks to have their pronouns in their bio; there are myriad reasons why they may not wish to and need to keep them private for privacy or because it’s not safe for them or whatever reason.

But you get some bonus “you’re probably at least not terrible” points if your pronouns are in your bio.

@rk @Cat_LeFey you can still be a terrible person but at least it rules out one specific but far too common type of terrible
@rk @Cat_LeFey Lt isn't a requirement, it is a flag.
@Cat_LeFey lol it's amazing that the "would be talking about sex all the time" thing is (still) a thing. like holy shit
@valpackett @Cat_LeFey every time I read the comments on a youtube video (yeah, yeah, I know) where someone’s saying “happy pride!” to a mixed audience there’s always at least one dingus in the comments who is trying to make it all about sex, and it’s never someone who’s celebrating pride.
@Cat_LeFey this is the best, most affirming, story I've seen all day. Thanks
@Cat_LeFey I love this! Also laughed out loud that he thought other communities would "talk about sex all the time" when in my experience, it's straight white men who do that more than any other group. 😂

@kimlockhartga @Cat_LeFey

"Those who can, do."
"Those who can't, complain about it."
(Or brag, falsely.)
😈

@kimlockhartga @Cat_LeFey I can kind of understand how they got there though. If all the groups of cishet white men are talking about sex all the time, but then those same guys talk about how sexual queer people are, anyone who doesn't see the world through a lens of "that's just homophobia" could logically conclude that queer people talk about sex EVEN MORE!
Because it's not obvious to them yet that everything these guys say is projection
@kimlockhartga @Cat_LeFey heck it is straight white men that have a sick fascination with the privates of other people...especially when it comes to children
@Cat_LeFey @hacks4pancakes Christ this is so fucking wholesome 🌈
@Cat_LeFey Can confirm. Am a cis-het presenting white male, and I feel more comfortable and safe in queer spaces.

@Cat_LeFey
What a positive and heartwarming story, thank you!

It was a good prompt to add LGBTQIA+ ally to my description.

@Cat_LeFey Thanks for this story. For several reasons. It is of some importance to understand, that (uninformed) people missinterpret the LGBTQI-friendly label as meaning "talk about weird sex stuff all the time".
It might be key to change communication here so that those people associate this label with "normal" other than "weird".

@Cat_LeFey

Unfortunately not always, if you look to Röhm, Weidel and much more far rights supporting fascism !!!

@Cat_LeFey the left's discrimination against Russian speakers is the only part of this story that isn't heart warming.

@celesteh @Cat_LeFey I'm a Russian and I don't understand — there is the discrimination here?

I saw a lot of shit&cringe in some of our local communities (especially in some gaming communities) — so I completely understand the gamers, whose saw some shit from ru players and now avoiding to contact with them.

I understand that I can do noting with it. I can just try to be a nice person, not a moron constantly yelling "CYKA BLYAT" in voicechat😃

@evgandr @celesteh @Cat_LeFey There is unfortunately now an association between “visibly Russian” and “anti-LGBT propaganda,” which is extremely unfair to most Russians but when you have a population of people who are scared for their own safety they latch on to whatever signals are present.

It’s like how Pepe the Frog used to be a wholesome cartoon character but now if you see someone with a Pepe avatar you gotta be careful around them.

@celesteh The history of Russian gamers being extremely toxic in general + the fact Russia is waging war in Europe right now should give you a hint why it is not a discrimination.
@Cat_LeFey

@th3rdsergeevich @Cat_LeFey

Edit: I just re-read the thread. This is happening a context of a badly behaved gamer community, but also in a larger context of how speakers of some languages are treated.

In my life , I know a Ukrainian refugee, who is a proud Ukrainian, but also a native Russian speaker.

The increasing cultural hostility to Russian speakers is problematic.

@Cat_LeFey love this: "Yes, but the presence of furries are like lichen. They are a sign of a healthy ecosystem." :D
Very good advice too!
@Cat_LeFey I love everything about this story, but what I love the most is that it can also be applied to social networks. That explains why [my] fedi [bubble] feels safe.
@Cat_LeFey @cinnamon > "Yes, but the presence of furries are like lichen. They are a sign of a healthy ecosystem."

Something about this is particularly humorous. It's not wrong either.
@Cat_LeFey Love this story and I love how it also broke down what sounds like a misconception he had. i.e. the talking about sex thing all the time. Very cool.

@Cat_LeFey I feel a bit sorry for the guy. Because there are many types of disenfranchised people and communities should be constructed around the support of all of them.

The existence of any of those groups is a good indication of joining the community. We should be against racism, sexism , authoritarianism , worker exploitation and in favor of an accepting supporting community for all, where democratic values are nurtured.

@Cat_LeFey Empathy goes both ways. You understand the other and he understands you.

It is a mutually supporting system.

@Cat_LeFey
"the presence of furries are like lichen. They are a sign of a healthy ecosystem."
Oohh... That's so nice, I keep this one.
@Cat_LeFey @cferdinandi I (chronically online outspoken lesbian) was guildleader for a WoW guild for 10 years and even though I'm not part of it anymore, I know the guild is still going, I have some people in there holding on to eachtohers' kindness, playing together in various online games and using discord to mentally support eachother. Still proud that I played a role in that
@Anneke @Cat_LeFey is it fair to say queer culture is a counterbalance to toxic masculinity?
A friend of mine who runs several servers has an interesting perspective. He purposefully invited people from a variety of backgrounds, including LGBTQIA+, people of color, whites, and people with a variety of political beliefs to be the first users on the server. He figured that bigots would hate a mixed community and either avoid the place or reveal themselves so they can get banned.
@Cat_LeFey are people really wary of russian? its the 2nd most used language on the internet, it feels weird that people would be wary of such a large group
