Probably crazy question... And I realize this is going to sound bougie as hell.

You know how they have tailors who will make a bespoke suit? Is there any equivalent like this for cobblers, to get like bespoke boots?

You know, they would measure their customer's feet, work with them on choices of style and leather material and soles, then presto... You have boots that perfectly fit what you are looking for?

(Context: many of you have seen that I wear the same pair of dark green Dr Marten boots pretty much all the time and I have worn these literally since college. I've had them repaired and re-soled probably half a dozen times or more. I love them, but they may finally be on their way out. And this style of boot, the Zachary boot, has long since been discontinued. It has this plush soft interior that is an absolute dream.)

@deviantollam my dad had a pair of dress shoes that a cobbler made for him in London in the 70s and they kept molds of his feet. When we went there as a family in 1988, he had contacted them ahead of time so he could pick up another pair that they made from his forms/molds because they had them on hand. That's all I know, but yes, it (used to) be a thing.

Edit: How close is r/goodyearwelt to what you're looking for?

@ckure I don't know that's a good place to start I suppose though

@deviantollam yes, these exist

I can't recommend any because I didn't mark them down when I saw them, but it's a reasonable search

@deviantollam

I don't know any bespoke cobblers to suggest but I'm given to understand that Solovair bought up a lot of the old DM lasts.

P.S. Nothing bourgeois about boots you plan to use until the leather itself gives up.

@Fuzz_Ra I bought a pair of Solovairs, yes, but they were very uncomfortable on my feet. Fit wasn't accommodating and they just never really broke in.

Ultimately, @Tarah turned them into motorcycle boots.

I'll try to go back and re-stretch them one day. But, honestly, any boots I would really want for life would have that same large ripple Vibram sole.

@deviantollam @Fuzz_Ra @Tarah Interesting because I spent the money for the Solovairs and had the same experience. The construction is very nice but the proportions are off. Had to size up to get my toes not to be crushed but then the upper is just way too big. Didn't make any sense.

@Fuzz_Ra @deviantollam
Most Solovairs have a different upper-to-midsole construction (called Stitchdown), as compared to any other DM-like boot.

Any time I'm in London (and have 300 quid to spare), I take a tube to Camden and take a very short walk to the shoe shop that likes to say "Dr Martens is our youngest brand". I'll try on different styles from NPS, Solovair, and Grinders (shop exclusive), and walk out with something that I can happily break in.

Only once was that a pair of Solovairs.

@deviantollam I know they exist but beyond that I'm not too sure. I remember Shaq talking about getting bespoke shoes because he couldn't find shoes in his size growing up.
JK Boots - The Best Handmade Custom Boots

JK Boots
@derekheld interesting, I'll reach out to them!
@deviantollam @derekheld https://nicksboots.com is another option. There are several others but I have boots from both Nick's and JK and they are both good. I did not go as custom as you can go, because the wait time gets pretty extreme for the full custom jobs. There are quite a few other artisans out there as well, who do other things besides work boots, but I don't have any personal experience with them.
Nicks Handmade Boots - Best Work Boots for Men and Women

Nicks boots: Durable handmade work, fire & duty, heritage, western, women's & outdoor boots for every adventure. Get free shipping and expedited lead times.

@deviantollam @derekheld Both Nick's and JK have youtube channels documenting the boot construction process, which I spent a lot of time watching while I was deciding on boots and waiting for them to arrive.

@deviantollam there are, one example is Tricker’s: https://trickers.com/pages/bespoke-shoes

Which has a royal warrant, but there are quite a few to choose from.

@XEJKnol "Prices for Bespoke Footwear start from £4,000 which includes the creation of your last and shoe-tree." 👀
@deviantollam unfortunately that tends to be the starting price for truly bespoke products the same is true for suits and other clothing items, unless you go to south east Asia of course ;)
@XEJKnol That's where I've gotten suits in the past sometimes, yeah 😉
@deviantollam in that case, do you perhaps have a recommendation for a decent tailor over there, am planning on taking a trip to that region sometime soon anyway ;)

@deviantollam there are a couple in the North West that used to specialize in lumber boots but I think have branched out (I want to say Nicks and Whites (sp?)). I've also been recommended a video about bespoke hand crafted hiking boots in Japan but never watched.

Also Wohlford (Dayton) out of Vancouver - but I think they went VC and did a lot of fuckery?

@Laxdude oh cool. I'll look around at them

@deviantollam check out Gasolina: https://gasolinaboots.com/

They got my weird shaped feet right on the first try, and they have a few models that are the doc marten neighborhood.

@overeducatedredneck they seem to specialize more in motorcycle apparel but nonetheless I will see how custom they can work
@deviantollam Their lower cut boots (eg: don't cover the calves, high top anywhere else) overlap strongly with work boots. (Doc Martens are respectable motorcycle armor.) It's just the market for custom fit and fashionable is mostly motorcyclists. There's probably also some "founded/run by bikers" going on.
@deviantollam Bespoke shoes are most definitely a thing. The world of cowboy boots, in particular, lets you go quite deep into the world of exotic animal leathers.
@deviantollam yup. Cowboy boots will get you started. Try heritage boots in Austin.
@noplasticshower not remotely interested in cowboy boots but thank you 😂

@deviantollam
I've only ever heard of the eyewateringly expensive ones that were favoured by (then) Prince Charles because I saw a TV segment on them.

I think it was these guys, the custom ones are over £4k apparently:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tricker%27s
https://trickers.com/pages/bespoke-shoes

I think I was once told that cobblers technically only repair but I don't know if the remaining ones make the shoemaker/cobbler distinction anymore.

@deviantollam: it looks like there's several options out there-- these limmer guys sound really good but you'll have to wait (2-3yrs) and go for an in-person fitting in NH. Limmer will do fittings remotely but then they don't guarantee the fit.

I've heard 2/3 of these names before (nicks & whites), the third also seems legit (baker):

also, it looks like the vibram 2661 ripple sole is what you're used to?

@deviantollam cobblers are absolutely a thing. I’ve often seen them on military bases, so military-related stores may be able to point you the right direction.

There’s also Renn Faire boot makers, but I suspect that’s not quite the fashion you’re going for.

@deviantollam Check out the Renfair circuit. That's where I got a pair a decade or so ago, so my information on specific craftspeople is out of date, but especially since it's the off-season for a lot of them, I'm sure the business would be appreciated.

@deviantollam Do you want a clone of the Zachary, or are you willing to go with a slightly different design that is going to last you a lifetime?

Whites and Wesco are two brands that are *extremely* well regarded, and they will both do customizations on their existing lines. I am aware of one person who had a custom purple leather hide tanned just so she could get purple Wescos.

Stay away from Danner, their QA isn’t the best.

@deviantollam renfaire, SCA and motorcycle groups sometimes get cobblers who'll make custom boots and shoes

I've known of people who do that due to significantly different sized feet

@deviantollam depending on how thrashed they are, might be worth having Wyatt & Dad take a look at them? https://wyattanddad.com/collections/boot-recrafts
RUBBER

@deviantollam todeyshoes.com in NYC. Awesome

@deviantollam A guy at our building was recommending Jim Green barefoot boots to me the other day, after noting my #minimalistshoes. These aren't bespoke, but you can do a custom order and spec things out in fair detail, without getting into bespoke prices. Looks like around $300.

@deviantollam I have several pair of custom Wesco boots, including steel-toed dress shoes. Not cheap but worth every penny.
@deviantollam We call them shoemakers, and that's their entire job.
@deviantollam shoemakers literally do this, most shoe shops that do sole repairs and stuff usually have at least one person qualified to do this type of thing I think
@deviantollam Absolutely yes. Perhaps not particularly useful to you in particular, but I had a pair made by https://hdrussellboots.com/ a couple years ago. The experience was pretty much exactly as you describe. I love them.

@deviantollam Hook up with Rose Anvil - he doesn’t make boots but he’ll know where to point you.
@deviantollam
I used to get my shoes and boots repaired at a city cobblers across the road from (and named after) my train station. One day, I was collecting a pair at the end of the day, and I noticed some pairs of wooden lasts on a shelf behind the counter. That led to a conversation with the owner about his sideline as a bespoke shoemaker (which was not advertised in-store). When I asked about costs, he rolled his eyes and said "well, if you have to ask, you probably can't afford them".
@deviantollam I can give you an address you can ship those boots to, and I can get an exact copy made. I also happen to have like a billion contacts in the leather shoe industry. Heck, I was at the funeral of the guy who brought modern leather tanning to Mexico and lived within 10 miles of 1300 different shoe factories. We could coordinate being in the city at the same time, and I can show you around.
