Hell, Ray Bradbury anticipated/predicted that future America much much earlier than 1986 in one of his novels! I'll leave it as a reader exercise to determine which one. 🙂
Oh, I have. In fact I discuss his work in my lecture on artificial intelligence.
It's about to become true. The Orange Scum will become incapable to govern within 1-2 years and the theocratic fascist VP will become President. That was the goal of the Federalist Society all along.
The USA has been a Theocracy since at least the 50's but it's always been there, it pandered to the Theocracy at the turn of the 19th Century to the 30's; Prohibition and the religious censorship of written material, even comics are just the most obvious examples of that.
That it's a Theology that joins Capital and Manifest Destiny using a corrupted Creed doesn't prevent it from being a Theology.
Yeah, it's not a Christian Theology.
I'm constantly amazed how well-thought Zappa is in these clips. He comes across as one of the better social sciences professors.
@geco_de yeah. But I could only find it on YouTube when I was looking.

Forewarning. It will probably make you angry. Unless you laugh it off. Those three people with him are abhorrent.

@markwyner I've always known his name but never actually heard any of his music or speech. Thanks for this.
I'm partly reminded of a debate I watched once between a physics and religion teacher at a fancy school. I forget the actual debate title, but the crux was whether you could have morality without religion.
Of course I agreed with the physicist - and in fact if you treat other people well WITHOUT the anticipation of punishment or reward in this or the next life, is that not MORE moral?
@sarajw I love this so much.
I have a curious relationship with spirituality and physics. I believe they’re intersectional when separated from organized religions.
And I def agree that morality can be independent of religion.
My wife and I just finished the series “The Good Place.” It’s a cute show that takes a surprisingly solid look at this very topic. You might check it out.
@markwyner it probably requires some kind of subscription service right?
And yes agreed - it all boils down to the Golden Rule for me: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Rule
@sarajw can’t argue with that rule. So simple and logical.
I’m an Ashkenazi Jew by blood, but an Atheist by spiritual choice. I was raised mostly Christian with lots of Jewish tradition and religious practice all around me. So I have varying perspectives about all of this. But it comes down, simply, to “don’t be a dick.”
@markwyner yessssss.
Seems like to me that the conservative types - while espousing that they are fine upstanding religious people - are actually wanting to reserve the right to be dicks to certain groups of people.
Frank Zappa and George Carlin warned about all this decades ago.
(2/2)
@herrLorenz honestly, I’m not a fan of his music. I never heard anything that brought me joy. But I’ve followed his work as a human being for as long as I can remember.
His book is one I’ve put off for far too long. I’m gonna read it this year.

No problem; His music, like some jazz, was too creative for some sensibilities. As a human, he was always honest and clear as to where he was coming from.
