@markwyner I've always known his name but never actually heard any of his music or speech. Thanks for this.
I'm partly reminded of a debate I watched once between a physics and religion teacher at a fancy school. I forget the actual debate title, but the crux was whether you could have morality without religion.
Of course I agreed with the physicist - and in fact if you treat other people well WITHOUT the anticipation of punishment or reward in this or the next life, is that not MORE moral?
@sarajw I love this so much.
I have a curious relationship with spirituality and physics. I believe they’re intersectional when separated from organized religions.
And I def agree that morality can be independent of religion.
My wife and I just finished the series “The Good Place.” It’s a cute show that takes a surprisingly solid look at this very topic. You might check it out.
@markwyner it probably requires some kind of subscription service right?
And yes agreed - it all boils down to the Golden Rule for me: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Rule
@sarajw can’t argue with that rule. So simple and logical.
I’m an Ashkenazi Jew by blood, but an Atheist by spiritual choice. I was raised mostly Christian with lots of Jewish tradition and religious practice all around me. So I have varying perspectives about all of this. But it comes down, simply, to “don’t be a dick.”
@markwyner yessssss.
Seems like to me that the conservative types - while espousing that they are fine upstanding religious people - are actually wanting to reserve the right to be dicks to certain groups of people.
