Planning to furnish an entire apartment on the cheap, and stubbornly trying to just not do IKEA, but it’s going to be IKEA again, isn’t it? It’s all going to be IKEA.
@hacks4pancakes everything is IKEA.
@fredrik everything else still requires me still swearing at hex wrenches, and is also shit.
@hacks4pancakes @fredrik give me a yell when you need to borrow an impact power driver, makes short work of IKEA assembly with no Allen keys involved. Still plenty of swearing though…
@jpm @fredrik oh you do not want to volunteer to help a hapless immigrant stranger assemble an apartment of furniture... -_- because I will probably have to accept, and then feel awful.
@jpm @fredrik I wonder how long it’ll take them to figure out that southern hemisphere screws tighten in the other direction.
@cafuego @fredrik that’s why the impact power driver has a reverse button on it…
@hacks4pancakes it’s basically giant Lego right? How hard could it be?
@jpm Its more the heavy lifting and listening to me swear a lot. I'll buy the beers and run the D&D game after though
@hacks4pancakes you realise we are all Australians who use swearing as punctuation, right? We tend to tone down the swearing for international audiences…
@hacks4pancakes @jpm D&D game in exchange for furniture assembly… sold… also I have a non ikea coffee table taking up space in my garage.. actually, I also have an IKEA coffee table sitting in my garage taking up space. I’ll try to grab some photos of each. Why do I have 2 spare coffee tables? Who knows.
@hacks4pancakes @jpm @fredrik nah yeah, deffo post for help when you get here, gotta meet the locals sometime.
@hacks4pancakes @fredrik
Often IKEA is less swearing at hex wrenches than cheap knock-offs

@sabik @hacks4pancakes

It's hard to beat Ikea on the cheap. More often then not Ikea is as good or better than the other cheap stuff for less money. Especially when you are moving half-way around the world and don't have the time to shop around.

@fredrik

@sabik
Agreed, put together some stuff from Kmart, Aldi and some online shop and the IKEA stuff goes together much easier and the instructions are way better
@hacks4pancakes @fredrik
@vertikar @sabik @fredrik It's true, and even in Australia it is about the same price.

@hacks4pancakes Price and quality’s there.

Also, a fun game you can play: https://x.com/HYBPA/status/882169620320337920

#TourdeFrance rider or IKEA furniture? 🚴 #HYBPA

X (formerly Twitter)
@hacks4pancakes been there, done that. I feel for you.
@hacks4pancakes Just tried to do the same thing with a bed. Everything else just kinda sucks for the price and IKEA is so easy.
@reportedlol they don’t make a canopy bed

@hacks4pancakes @reportedlol

No Canopy Bed? Spare bedsheet... thumbtacks... done... 🤪

@hacks4pancakes I mean, there are thrift stores. That's what I'd tell my past self when I moved into my first apartment.
@hacks4pancakes it's always Ikea. Even when you tell yourself it's not going to be Ikea. Almost especially then.
@bea @hacks4pancakes ive given up here long ago and just accepted my particle-board fate
@hacks4pancakes alternatives in that general space if you want to mix up the aesthetic would be Fantastic Furniture and Amart.
@hacks4pancakes
"Long ago in days of yore
It all began with a god named Thor
There were vikings and boats and some plans for a furniture store
It's not a bodega,
It's not a mall,
They sell things for apartments smaller than mine
(As if there were apartments smaller than mine)"

@hacks4pancakes IKEA is fine for most things. Local options to take a look at include:

https://www.freedom.com.au

https://www.fantasticfurniture.com.au

https://www.fortywinks.com.au

https://www.snooze.com.au

https://au.koala.com (their furniture is nice, but their mattress is only “ok”. It does sleep cool though, which is a consideration)

@hacks4pancakes I have some extra dowels and stuff you can have if needed
@hacks4pancakes the alternative is funding Gerry Harvey and fuck that
@xssfox @hacks4pancakes I specifically didn’t link to that store chain in my poast about local stores to check out
@hacks4pancakes Me, I'll stick with IKEA whenever I can get it. IKEA saved me from a life of vinyl-covered masonite! 😸
@hacks4pancakes You’re typing that like it’s a bad idea. It’s a great way to get up and running quickly. You can change stuff out later.
@hacks4pancakes we just did the same and failed after one room
@hacks4pancakes Overstock.com and Houzz.com for general stuff and then use Etsy.com for unique vintage items to make your place feel unique.

@hacks4pancakes Always is.

I'm pretty sure we're sitting around 90% Ikea stuff with the exceptions being 1 desk, 2 office chairs and a couch.

@hacks4pancakes Well there’s op shops. You can get pretty nice 50 year old couches and chests of drawers for close to free.
@hacks4pancakes Ikea makes nice pillows, and comforters. It only stands to reason I had to purchase enough things on the way out to justify the hours spent finding pillows.

@hacks4pancakes UTESPELARE!

I do like the flexibility / cheap / massive desk area of an interior door on two nice sawhorses.

@hacks4pancakes Don't see why not. Assuming they have IKEA in .au, really the only downside is the time you need to assemble all the things.
@hacks4pancakes Maybe IKEA's stuff is better over there but it's quality has tanked buying something recently vs. 10 years ago.
@hacks4pancakes
I like the store that sells virtual furniture. It's called IDEA.

IKEA Hackers
@hacks4pancakes The universe is IKEA all the way down. 😌

@hacks4pancakes

You could Thrift store (some) stuff... and look on "local" give-away/ resale shops, pages, etc.
- maybe check out apps/ sites like "Buy Nothing," Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, etc.

@hacks4pancakes if you don't have a Posidriv #2 screwdriver tip, get one. You'll be glad you did. All of those "Phillips" screws are actually Posidriv and don't strip and cam out if you use the correct tip.

@hacks4pancakes

Nah, mate!

Kmart is the go - check out the search results for "Kmart hacks", the internet is chock full of fully sick ideas!

#Kmart

@hacks4pancakes 2nd hand shops are also a good option!
@hacks4pancakes
Cheap and at once? Yeah, probably yeah. I am refurnishing my apartment slowly, one item by one, and even then IKEA tries to sneak in - I hate what it does to European forests, but effective designs for small corners/rooms are so hard to find.

@hacks4pancakes do they not have trash nothing or free cycle down there?
Craigslist free section?

Thrift stores, yard sales?

I've outfit more than one place with castoff furniture

@hacks4pancakes Will you need a dining table? I've got one that's real wood and everything, it's only a "four person" though and that's being pretty generous, but for an apartment it might work if you even need one.

I'll be using it as a desk over Xmas but after that it'll be about time to move it on, if it's helpful I can save it for ya.

@fwaggle I think most of these north Melbourne apartments are too teeny. Thanks for asking! We shall see.
