I was in Tesco and there were posters up, printed by Tesco, expressly asking people to buy toys in the shop and donate them there for kids in need at Christmas.

I just thought, “We could cut out the middleman here and you could just do that, Tesco. You get the toys cheaper anyway. Because this just feels like you’re profiting from children’s poverty.”

@Nickiquote Maybe use some of that £23.50 per second profit they're making.
@Nickiquote It's the same with foodbank donations. It annoys me that they make millions in profit then ask for donations to foodbanks, which they hope will be goods bought in-store. Sounds like a tax scam to me instead of genuine donations.
@Pamela1960 @Nickiquote it's always a tax scam. They'll claim it as their donation to offset their taxes, while allowing you to pay for it

@sleepfreeparent @Pamela1960 @Nickiquote In the US it’s not a tax scam, they can’t (legally) count customer donations as tax writeoffs

Don’t know if it works differently in the UK and wherever else Tescos are

@Pamela1960 @Nickiquote
I would be (somehow) fine if they offer me to pay their purchase price for any gifts. Then I would give money and they would give (a little bit) labor. But the way it is now they just increase their profit by shouting: charity!
@Pamela1960 @Nickiquote Tesco further supports their partners with a yearly partnership donation of £1.25m to Trussell and £200k to FareShare.
But I agree - they do tend to ask the customer to do the heavy lifting via food donations

@Nickiquote

Perhaps for every toy bought they could match it with 3 other provided from Tesco....

Yer that's not going to fly with them... Is it ?

@Nickiquote
Never let peoples suffering stand in the way of a profit, a true tory value.....
@Nickiquote Next you’re going to tell me capitalism isn’t altruistic.
@aral I’m sure the natural effect of the market will cause presents to trickle down chimneys.
@Nickiquote @aral So Santa was Hayek all along!? The signs were there...
@Nickiquote Santa™ approves this message.

@Nickiquote I accidentally hit the "round up to donate" thing on the self service the other day in Tesco. I made a point of getting them to come cancel it off.

You're Tesco, why don't you donate some of your profits instead.

@robb @Nickiquote I don't want them to donate anything.

I want a taxation system that means they don't have to.

@Nickiquote same thing in the US where grocery stores ask you to donate money through them or buy food through them to donate to those who need the food...
@ark Yeah we have that too.

@Nickiquote

I have been tempted many times to lift toys and drop them there without paying. For this exact reason. Same with foodbanks.

@JaxVent @Nickiquote Should be totally legal as you haven’t taken it out the shop. In the U.K. anyway.

On Reddit or bird site someone would show up to say that supermarkets don’t make that much.

@Nickiquote I do wonder with this and with the food bank collection in store if they get tax back on the charitable donations they made.
@jfrench I hope not, I mean you’d think HMRC would come down on it like a ton of bricks. But according to other people that has happened in other places.

@Nickiquote

I see where you are coming from but this skirts uncomfortably close to the

> We dont believe in giving to charity because it enables the government to shirk their responsibilities

mindset
for me anyway

@benh I understand what you mean.

@Nickiquote

Tescos should absolutely be encouraged to give as much as possible to food banks.

But it is a good thing that they are making it easier for the rest of us to also give to food banks

@Nickiquote @SiegeFeathers Yep, and while contrary to myth there’s no tax advantage here they will absolutely advertise “£100k of toys donated through Tesco” later in a way that sounds like Tesco paid.

@Nickiquote

I did hear of some people deciding to pick up and drop into the donate boxes before heading towards the tills to pay, because placement sometimes allowed this...

@Nickiquote I remember in 2020 someone on Twitter flipped out at me and blocked me when they were trying to raise money to give kids laptops for remote school and I suggested that the schools should be doing this, they can use the money they won’t be using to fully staff the school buildings. (They were probably trying to scam which is probably why they got so mad I suggested that people shouldn’t have to pay for this.)
@Nickiquote there is nothing, nothing that capitalists won't exploit. Labor? Exploited. Poverty they help create? Exploited. Your desire to overthrow the terrible system they've helped create? Here, please buy our shows that satisfy your need to overthrow the big bad people (The Boys, Loot).

so ridiculous.
