*People still talk this way, as opposed to, "We'll have a giant Internet-scraping platform that uses more nuclear power than a city"
@bruces look, it all just depends on how low your opinion of the average intelligence of human beings is.
@kyonshi IMO the overall human intelligence level is actually decreasing. Chances are it will soon be as low as the so called AI.

@kyonshi @bruces
Funny, when I pointed out yesterday in a discussion, that LLMs cannot solve even simple additions reliably, that was the answer ⇾ hey how humans have problems getting 3+3 right?
@kyonshi @bruces i'd bet the average Roomba is already far ahead of the average American

AI pioneer accused of having sex with trafficking victim on Jeffrey Epstein’s island

A victim of Jeffrey Epstein testified in 2015 that she was forced to have sex with AI pioneer and MIT professor Marvin Minsky, according to court documents.

@older @bruces Incel nerds like pretty girls?

@older @bruces Careful how the article (except for the extra weird royal) to be very careful only to draw attention to dead friends of Epstein.

Here’s a Video of What Young Trump Looked Like on the Prowl With Jeffrey Epstein

Trump dances, flirts, and gropes women on the dance floor, occasionally retreating to the sidelines to size up the crowd.

@yacc143 @older @bruces an AI with the intelligence of an average human being would tell you that guy will lower the price of eggs
@bruces Worse yet, we have several such systems, all striving for one-upmanship over all others, which multiplies the energy and resources drained for that essentially enrichment-oriented purpose.

@bruces

My thoughts -

“Intelligence” - we haven’t even got a good definition of what that is.

Computers are just a knowledge base. They don’t have life.

That’s the movies talking.

@bruces We've achieved intelligence of a lying hamster...
@bruces 35 later we've got people with the intelligence of a washing machine, instead.
@bruces Merely a play on words, let us argue on additional small specifics while regressing our stagnation in the ensuing confusion.
@bruces
Recently i saw the film #Idiocracy - and yes - i argree with Marvin.
@bruces gotta love the boundless optimism of the 60's and 70's lol

The image shows a text that reads:
"In fron three to eight years we will have a machine with the general intelligence of an average human being"

Marvin Minsky, 1970

@bruces Isn't it interesting that they call it intelligence but no one among them actually cares about what's intelligence?
@bruces Is it the 'intelligence' that we've wondered about for millennia, or the 'intelligence' that they conveniently defined?

@bruces

Perhaps this statement needs an update:
In three to eight years the average human will have the intelligence of a current general machine intelligence.

@bruces these people don't understand what Intelligence is, the question reminds me of the one people asked Deep Thought in the Hitch Hikers Guide about the Universe....we don't really understand the terms of Intelligence to say that we have replicated it.

Plus, Minksy is a nonce, so fuck what he thinks.

IIRC, he said that roughly around the time that IBM announced a major breakthrough around a way to model their neural processing units based on the nervous system of the Tomato Hornworms.
@bruces @gleick judging by this ad I was just served, it might be that the humans in The Matrix weren’t forced into those pods of goop, they climbed in willingly.

@bruces @gleick

Minsky, who we shall always remember as the 'genius' behind the Cruise Missile where, during Desert Storm, 2/3rds of them failed or hit wrong targets.

What a guy.

@bruces @gleick

With so many people being educated at institutions that prioritize teaching people how to calculate how many angels can fit on the head of a pin, I think AI has reached this milestone, not because AI has improved, it’s just the decline of the average human capacity that made it a reality.

@bruces …and if we spent the sort of money that goes into LLMs on nuclear fusion instead, we probably would already have fusion power plants…
