My whole life, I've lived in New England: the land of blizzards and ice storms. When there's a storm on the forecast, we prepare. Stock up on bottled water and nonperishables, refill prescriptions that are running low, charge the flashlights and electronic devices, have a stack of blankets on hand, make sure there's fuel in the car and (if you're lucky) generator, restack the indoor wood pile. 1/3

Sometimes the forecasted storms uneventfully pass by, in which case you're left with a little extra food on hand, some jugs of water for the next storm, and some cozy blankets to snuggle up in.

Anyway, this has been a message to those choosing to mock people who are taking steps to prepare for a Trump presidency. 2/3

If the worst does not actually come to pass, I don't think I'm going to be sitting here going "oh noooo I can't believe I strengthened my communities, made sure I'm up to date on my healthcare needs, and volunteered for causes I believe in"

@molly0xfff this, on so many levels friend.

@molly0xfff Really happy to hear about the volunteering piece!

I would LOVE it if everyone took the sadness, hurt and betrayal they may be feeling and channeled that into taking action as a part of charity work to help folks who are part of threatened communities.

My wife volunteers for https://www.ontherise.org/ and I volunteer with https://withgloria.org/ through https://directory.civictech.guide/listing/techies-4-reproductive-justice-t4rj and we're both MUCH happier for it.

@molly0xfff ... and made sure all my loved ones have renewed their passports.
@molly0xfff Literally what those who mock would say ... shake my SMH ...

@molly0xfff

Well put.

I don't want to raise a stink, we have warned everyone who will listen and nobody else is listening.

And, maybe nothing super bad will happen, no crystal ball here.

But we ARE bracing for impact. Stronger communities, resources, and an up-to-date passport are good in any era.

@molly0xfff I experienced so many typhoons since I moved to Taiwan almost 16 years ago.
This might be the biggest one and I'm in fulltime prep-mode.

thank you for these comforting words, Molly. We're in this together!

@molly0xfff Big “but what if climate change is fake and we make a better world for nothing?” energy here.

@molly0xfff 100%

Re: strengthening communities, I've been thinking/talking/writing a lot about that and hearing it pop up everywhere (which is 😍 ) so I thought you might like this, which I just read and found so powerful:

Collective Survival, Adaptation and Direct Action

Defiance must be woven into the fabric of our daily lives, rather than simply proclaimed at marches or on social media.

Organizing My Thoughts
@molly0xfff As a nice bonus, it also works for those using the storms here in Spain to promote our trumpalikes.
@molly0xfff
Shit storm preparations.
@molly0xfff I also have a small solar panel that I use to charge batteries along with all of the supplies that you mention. Generator is dual fuel so I keep two tanks for that, and one for the BBQ for coffee and hot food.

@molly0xfff I wouldn't mock anyone who makes rational preps.

I *might* roll my eyes a bit at the habitually unprepared that 1) choose *this* moment to start googling "prepping" and 2) who will decide it means buying a pre-packaged Bucket o' Prep from Walmart and forgetting about it afterward. Preparedness is best played as a long game and not a transient panic reaction.

[while writing this I was reminded of the Be Prepared scout motto. Then I had the unfortunate realization my eagle scout card (signed by Reagan) is probably older than you are. :-\ ]

@molly0xfff The mocking is interesting because it takes so much of what we have for granted, forever.
@molly0xfff those same people have an arsenal in their basement just incase the English invade again.
@molly0xfff if only we had a way to predict what a trump presidency would look like
@molly0xfff
I like the way you think, Molly! I grew up in New England, too. When I lived in Colorado, I did search & rescue. I was prepared for anything at any time. Now that I live in Kyiv, Ukraine, where who knows what’s going to happen from day to day, being prepared for anything is always foremost in my mind. On every trip for groceries, I always buy a couple of non-perishable items. I’m always well-stocked with water and toilet paper and first aid supplies. And now, for the impending 💩 storm, I’m prepping by expanding my monthly financial support of various eye-of-the-storm organizations ten-fold: from reproductive rights to migrant rights to LGBTQ rights to online security and honest journalism, I’m investing like never before. I’m psyched for the battle and thrilled to be in such excellent company!

@molly0xfff

I live in New Hampshire. I will be stocking up on N95 masks.

@molly0xfff one would have expected New England to at least be better than Old England in that regard. Disappointing 😞
@molly0xfff
And remember, we are not alone.
@molly0xfff Fellow practical New Englander here agrees.
@molly0xfff Earlier the better too, it sucks hitting Shop n' Save right when everyone else collectively decides to get the customary nor'easter milk and eggs.
Hopefully I ain't pushing the metaphor too hard here.

@Garsal I was going to mention that the ingredients for French Toast were missing LOL

@molly0xfff

@molly0xfff I’m not ready for @frenchtoast Alerts yet this year. Still dealing with leaves.
@mack505 ok but if it snows you can't see the leaves *taps temple*

@molly0xfff I'm now following the French Toast alerts...ty!

@mack505

@molly0xfff Many greetings and much agreement from southern NH!

@molly0xfff @lisamelton

“bottled water” Along those lines, does anyone have recommendations for a 5 gallon potable water container that has a large enough opening to clean easily and isn’t plastic? I’ve found 1 made of stainless steel for $175.

@Bleyddyn @molly0xfff @lisamelton carboys for home beer brewing. There are glass and plastic. There are brushes for washing them. They should be less than $20-25. It's been a few years since I bought them but significantly less than stainless steel
@molly0xfff and make a run to the liquor store don't forget.
@molly0xfff Did you also fill the tub so you had washwater?
@molly0xfff
Nice & wise...
Thx for that!
Still have to work on focusing my mind into that direction, but this clearly is the way to go.
