WTF? Did Microsoft hold a series of internal meetings where they decided to use the *worst* possible new name for Windows Remote Desktop? I received an email this morning from a customer who had an issue with “Windows App,” and I was 99% sure I was being phished/attacked, and nearly tossed it in the trash (especially as it had an attached 1MB Word file).

But no, “Windows App” is really the new name for Microsoft Remote Desktop. I have no idea when that happened, but it’s horrible.

Captured within some of those meetings..

“We need a name that’s less web searchable than Books, Calculator, Numbers, Pages, etc. We’ll show Apple!”

‘Oooh oooh … I’ve got one! Let’s call it Windows App!’

@rgriff Thought the same when I’ve learned about that change few months ago.
@rgriff this is the company that came up with hard to search products like Word, Access, SQL Server, Teams, Project… etc…

@boxofsnoo @rgriff that strategy made sense back when they did it. We didn't have a public Internet. We didn't have search engines.

What we did have was a company whose name was not well known. People at the time tended to know the names of software products, but not the company behind them. Microsoft wanted to change that, so as to leverage one product to grow another.

The solution was to use product names that were so generic the company name had to be used as essentially an adjective to clarify that the speaker was referring to software, not a generic physical object.

That strategy worked perfectly.

@rgriff Google Workspace has a section in Google Drive to make collection of files (basically a collection of aliases) called…Workspaces.
@rgriff
Next it will be Windows App Service Subsystem, ASS for short.
@rgriff there were plans of providing "Windows as a Service" and it was supposed to be named Windows App. But Microsoft being Microsoft, things keep getting killed and renamed all the time so this happened
@GNUxeava @rgriff WaaSapp obviously too nineties.

@nf3xn

How about Wasappi, since it's driving tears into your eyes whenever you use it?

@GNUxeava @rgriff

@katzenberger @GNUxeava @rgriff Could be confused with the cloud data deletion service.
@rgriff using windows with my windows app :)
@rgriff We had Nvidia App, and now Windows App, what's next?
@robinsyl @rgriff at least nvidia app is the nvidia app. it at least does something.

@rgriff
I'm using Windows app to use the Windows apps in you windows. You will be assimilated.

Microsoft has become a totally demented cult. PLEASE read this entirely : https://www.wheresyoured.at/the-cult-of-microsoft/

The Cult of Microsoft

Soundtrack: EL-P - Flyentology At the core of Microsoft, a three-trillion-dollar hardware and software company, lies a kind of social poison — an ill-defined, cult-like pseudo-scientific concept called 'The Growth Mindset" that drives company decision-making in everything from how products are sold, to how your on-the-job performance is judged. I am

Ed Zitron's Where's Your Ed At
@sebsauvage @rgriff the Growth Mindset is nothing exclusive to Microsoft, but every publicly traded company.
@rgriff some days it feels like they’re trying to destroy search engine based troubleshooting and research
@rgriff MS is usually shit at naming but this takes the absolute cake
@rgriff hilarious... when reality overcomes sarcasm... amaizng
@rgriff This is even worse than when they renamed Azure Active Directory to Entra ID. At least that had a reason for being (people were consistently confusing Azure Active Directory with Windows Active Directory, two entirely different things).
@badtux @rgriff that did solve my confusion in assuming they were related. But also means I've been tripped up several times by things documented as AD but meaning Entra. Or links that don't work because why redirect stuff?
(I get frequent security alerts from MS, none of which go to working pages (renamed areas), so you have to hunt down the problem with the limited clues given, or from the URL hidden between the outlook safelink and redirected "no" page 🤦‍♂️)

@rgriff @vmstan

“what is that?”
"windows app”
"I know it's for windows, what is it called"
"windows app”
“…”

@rgriff

[Remote Desktop -> Windows App. whaaa!?]

I agree the change is both startling and fraught, but wait. There's this. A huge number of users are using non-Windows machines to access Windows hosted virtually for work, even in the office. People no longer get a machine with corporate assets, just remote access. Think Mac, Linux, tablets with keyboards, even phones. User? Non-IT. Rarely if ever technical. IT knows, we don't want users f-ing with their machines. Asked, users will say, "I'm logging on to work," or simply... Wait for it... "Windows." Aaaarrrgghh!

It makes sick sense, but it'll either work for marketing or they change it, and there ain't anything we can do about it.

Deep breaths! Deep breaths.

@rgriff

Brought you by the people who renamed Office 365 into Microsoft 365.

@rgriff I can't help myself: it's not even "Previously Remote Desktop". It's previously Remote Desktop Connection (which I always invoke by searching for RDP). Sorry. I'll try to be less of a "well, actually" bro the NEXT time Microsoft does something this insanely stupid.
@rgriff They could've even gone for "Windows Remote Control" which I would've still accepted even though it's stupid since I've accessed non Windows systems over RDP before
@rgriff it's even better that i use the WINDOWS app to connect to ubuntu when i need to extend my screen to my ipad
@rgriff i'm disappointed but not surprised because this is the same company thats named the xbox x series s x series x
@rgriff we heard you like Windows Apps, so we created a Windows App App to let you use Windows Apps on Windows through Windows App
@rgriff @kyleve as soon as I saw this in raycast I thought WTF is that and immediately uninstalled it. I didn't even realise it was RDP
@rgriff give me RDCMan or give me death. So happy Sysinternals revived that application.
@rgriff Just fire up the new Windows "Windows App" App to launch your remote Windows app
@rgriff lmao what a normal company
@rgriff "Windows App" is a really terrible rename.
@rgriff Nobody is going to call it Windows App. It'd be like Abbott and Costello "Hu's on first. No Windows App. Yeah which one?" De facto name will be "Remote Desktop" or if you are older "Terminal Services". I don't know why they do this shit deliberately. Someone should ask them.
@rgriff This could be quite cool actually eg on iPad
@rgriff @hacks4pancakes Windows App Core X .Net Framework Standard Pro
@rgriff That's Microsoft. Constantly innovating in the field of terrible names for things.
@rgriff tbf they have been warning about this horrible decision for a while
@rgriff @hacks4pancakes Microsoft has been awful naming products for a while, but this might be the worse.
@rgriff The Artist Formerly Known as Remote Desktop
@rgriff So we have Windows for Windows and Teams for Teams. What's next?
Outlook -> Spam ?
SQL Server -> database ?
PowerPoint -> Slides ?
Windows -> Computer ?
@rgriff Coming Q1 2025, Microsoft Defender for Windows App
@rgriff
Missed opportunity to call it Windows Window.
@rgriff They just announced the new name for Outlook: It will be called „Spam App“
@rgriff at a different software company "customers can install our app on all their devices. We have the iPhone app, android app, windows app" "yes...customer support clocked out early yesterday. A customer tried to explain that their windows app isn't starting, and customer support suggested they should reinstall our app to see if that fixes the issue, and the customer didn't manage to explain that they need the windows app to do anything about the installation of the <productname> windows app"

@rgriff Don't worry, there are only about 100-200 other functionalities that can be renamed to “Windows App” too, to make this genius move even better.

“not that Windows App” will be a very popular saying in the near future.

@rgriff
OMG. It even is worse. Remote desktop now doesn't work on Linux. Hooray 🤮

The RDP Web Application now redirects to the "Windows App" which doesn't allow me to login as I'm not coming from a company device (which is the point 😠 )

Edit: The classical RDP Web App still exists and works on Linux. It only took LOOOOONG to load and the "Windows App" definitively doesn't work.

@rgriff that is terrible. No indication what it does, hard to find via start menu search, hard to get help via Google, confusing for support if you really mean that or just made a guess at something you don't know the name of...
Even for Microsoft that's a baby's breakfast of a name
@rgriff At least they do some better thinking when developing software
@rgriff but people keep saying „no, you have to admit that Microsoft really got better the last few years“ 🙄
@rgriff There's also something phishy about a "Get" button. It just feels sketchy somehow.
@rgriff ... because of the collected trauma of being told "all you do is moan", "if you hate it so much what should we do instead?" and "stop complaining and do something about it" I've prepared a design mockup
@rgriff Windows App Series A/W for Insiders
@rgriff I’m convinced that Microsoft has adopted this “bad” naming strategy as a promotional strategy. Why would we have ANY reason to discuss this program otherwise?!
