Over 50% of Americans cannot read at a high school level.

But we're going to try to tell them about Trump being an authoritarian or fascist.

They don't know what these words mean and they lack the intellectual framework and knowledge of history to understand the explanation.

The end.

Please do not reply to this post with projection, abusive speech or imaginary meanings you make up yourself.

I've had three people do this now and I will obviously block you.

The 50% figure is factual. I didn't make it up. I'm not suggesting anything except an explanation for why Democratic messages failed to convince people to vote for Harris. Many of them literally didn't understand what she was talking about.

I'm not saying that this can't be changed. I'm saying this is the situation as it is now. How we got to a place where over 50% of adults cannot understand political discourse, have no knowledge of history or current events, etc. and can't read an article to learn about it is worth discussing.

Your crazy BS is not.

Consider seeing a therapist instead of replying here.

Seriously.

Racist replies will be reported and removed. Fuck off.

@dangrsmind I sadly think you're probably right. Of course, it's the end product of decades of the degrading of public education in this country.
@dangrsmind one point my wife made to me recently - she can understand Trump more easily than Harris other than Trump’s incoherence. English isn’t her native language. So Harris sometimes uses words she’s not familiar with but she never hears Trump use words she doesn’t know.
@thomasjwebb @dangrsmind I was taught to look it up if I didn't understand it and that's something I practice even now, but I'm realizing that it's not a universal experience and I think we need to bring it back, but we need to figure out how to combat stupid AI answers dominating search results first.

@thomasjwebb @dangrsmind

that is a super interesting observation

Trump speaks 'at 5th grade level' in his speeches, new study suggests

Political speeches are ramping up as the US prepares for the election on 5 November, with a host of different styles and tactics being used. Studies have shown that as the literacy rates in a county decline, voter participation also tends to decrease, and therefore understanding readability is cruci...

@dangrsmind he knows his audience...lowest common denominator.
@thomasjwebb @dangrsmind If I couldn't understand what a political candidate was saying I wouldn't vote for the other person
@thenerdfulspirit @dangrsmind sure and obviously my wife despises Trump. She's just able to clearly see why the uneducated might like him, from a non-native English speaker perspective.
@thomasjwebb @dangrsmind the Sun Newspaper does the same thing. It's designed to be read by a 12 year old. Simple grammar and vocabulary. Orwell was right. By removing words you remove their concepts. And the Sun is ridiculously right leaning but also fickle as they did support Tony Blair. The stuff they print is basically hate speech, ditto Murdoch's talk TV and the other UK tabloids

@thenerdfulspirit @dangrsmind I think we shouldn't cede the ground of easily accessible prose to the right. That doesn't mean we should sacrifice using the right word or saying more complicated things. When I write I'll use big words but explain what they mean if it's not known by the general public.

One thing I'm currently working on is mini-zines meant to be read by anyone, including children, about opposing fascism.

@thomasjwebb @dangrsmind didn't liberals use this reasoning to support the invasion of Iraq, ditto the demonisation etc of Iran and Gaza etc? "They don't know any better" if they are white "They should know better" if they are brown

@dangrsmind

One of the bulletpoints in Project 2025 and Trump's campaign is the abolition of the US Department of Education:

Project 2025 Wants To Kill US Department of Education

"My son is one of millions of disabled kids that will lose access to education when the Department of Education is destroyed," one user on X said.

@dangrsmind I've been thinking about the fact that #Canada has the wonderful Canadian Museum of Human Rights, and how I wish that we could send all children in Canada on a field trip there ... They have resources for teachers, and maybe they would be useful for some teachers out there (or maybe they would have suggestions for the museum on things that would be good to add and make public)

@dangrsmind @OldAndCranky what was the level in 1776?

@donlamb_1 @OldAndCranky

I grew up in Lexington Massachusetts so I know that the famous Minute Men were drunks that hung around in a tavern together.

@dangrsmind Those, unfortunately, include some of my relatives. Sow bad seeds and reap a bitter harvest. It’s really sad seeing it coming to fruition.

@dangrsmind

Jesus, is it actually that bad?

@DroidPort the number I found was 54%
@dangrsmind 1984 taught us that words are more than just letters in an arrangement. They allow higher order thinking. If someone doesn’t have the vocabulary to understand fascism, they don’t understand it
@dangrsmind Those who "lack the intellectual framework and knowledge of history to understand" will leave the stove on, burn their hand, their house and the neighbourhood. If they live to tell the story, they'll proudly tell the survivors how it all happened, flummoxed that there those who "lack the intellectual framework and knowledge of history to understand"

@dangrsmind I believe Trump doesn't know what a Fascist is--'Whatever you call it-everybody's going to kiss my ass and Like it!(especially ME)-I AM the King and my subjects will OBEY my Minions-because they want to live

@dangrsmind
I'm sorry, how is it possible that half the population of one of the world's most technologically advanced nations is close to illiterate?

That's mind-blowing to me.

@dangrsmind
Need for simple voter qualification test --

1. Are you confident that the Universe is over 10,000 years old ?
2. Did you vote for Trump more than once ?
#Fascism #Ignorance

@dangrsmind People are making a lot of Brawndo jokes (it has what plants crave) but the first three minutes of Idiocracy explains our current situation completely; angry, ignorant morons breed faster than thoughtful, intelligent people. We never had a chance.
@Gustodon @dangrsmind
Exposure to education is an environmental factor, not an evolutionary one.

@duckwhistle @Gustodon

Evolution isn't mentioned in my post.

You are replying to my post.

This is exactly what I was talking about.

I hadn't seen this video however.

Aiden Ross is Trump's son Baron's favorite podcaster which is why Trump was on his show.

@dangrsmind You might also find this interesting, written in 2014 about Trump's oral-focused communication rather than written:

"Oral culture rewards redundancy... repetition is one useful technique, and Trump is a master of it. Consider the remarks he made during a March debate: "I'm a leader. I'm a leader. I've always been a leader. I've never had any problem leading people. If I say do it, they're going to do it. That's what leadership is all about.""

@tomm thank you so much, definitely going to include this material (with reference to you) and some other things I have on text anlysis of Trump's Twitter feed and speeches.I'm moving this all into my upcoming lecture.
