After being published on my channel for over two years, YouTube put a strike on my channel for my video showing people how to set up Jellyfin on their NAS, for promoting "dangerous or harmful content".

Video was posted here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VkY1vTpCJY) and had nothing about bypassing DRM, stealing content, or bypassing subscription services (other than a call to stop using Netflix, Disney+, etc. because they keep jacking up rates while providing less quality).

Better than Disney+: Jellyfin on my NAS

YouTube
Wow... fastest strike appeal ever? (< 40 minutes)
@geerlingguy
I think google should have a strike counter for how many fake strikes they make. And fines if they do too much?
@portaloffreedom @geerlingguy I think the issue here is Disney complaining about the use of their name.
@geerlingguy YouTube is out of control. I wish there was another good alternative.
@geerlingguy I wonder if they have created a taskforce to look up certain words on YouTube like Jellyfin and others, since they seem to be cracking down on ad-blockers, alternative viewers and more?
@geerlingguy you do have the edgy content thanks to rsj - I agree utube is out of control - explore other alternatives and diversify. #god fearing
@geerlingguy try to appeal - you may win but overall this is a control issue - they know you are super compliant but they want to show you who is boss andd you have no choice with a big family plus rsj to support #internecine warfare #phyricvictory
@gary_alderson Yeah, I've submitted an appeal, it says they'll get back in 72 hours.
@geerlingguy you should think about making office pc fix center plus service small biz networks and build custom servers - this is still decent money and would get you more inculcated as no 1 gun in stl IT for tricky problems - if youtube died tomorrow you would do just fine - probably a good way to look at it, don't let youtube take up too much space or time, think about startup opps as well and alternatives - diversifying makes sense esp since they have a lock on ads on web - that complicates things #passive income #code base
@geerlingguy I have set up my own jellyfin server at home because I watched your video. Phak youtube and these greedy corporations
@geerlingguy Dangerous and harmful... to the streaming media industry! 😎
@geerlingguy sounds pretty anti-competitive if you think of it from a YouTube Premium perspective

@geerlingguy

they really hate the prospect of owning your own content.

@geerlingguy is still up here. Did they reverse their insanely wrong strike?
@talktech Weird, maybe caching?
@geerlingguy could be?
@talktech That would be a copyright claim though... and it's definitely within fair use as that clip is about 4s long used to illustrate a point.
@geerlingguy start migrating to something like https://joinpeertube.org/
What is PeerTube? | JoinPeerTube

A free software to take back control of your videos! With more than 600,000 hosted videos, viewed more than 70 millions times and 150,000 users, PeerTube is the decentralized free software alternative to videos platforms developed by Framasoft

@geerlingguy What's the problem with mirroring your content on the PeerTube for example? Or making own instance of it? Google together with their yt are playing pitty and shitty games for years with people, creators and viewers as well. They should be boycotted especially by such known und respected creators like you are. The sooner and more people stop using them, the better will be for us all. No users means no data to make money on it for them. Their money we are. So let's go away from there!
@geerlingguy That sucks! I frequently watch channels, such as yours and other tech-Tubers, that showcase how awesome many self-hosted and/or open source services are. We need people like you because it encourages people like myself to play and experiment with home labs.
@geerlingguy Maybe host on Peertube or Odysee as an backup...
Does critical reviews of somebody's product count as "harmful" since it may harm their sales? It would be an outrageous definition of "harmful", but from your summary it sounds like that may in fact be the definition they use.

@kasperd
Remember about the poor capitalists feelings about their money!⸮ ☝️ 🧐

Jellyfin - Shivering-Isles GitOps Infrastructure

@geerlingguy Considering this has been happening to other video makers, I'm wondering if this is a deliberate policy: aggressive strikes to frighten other creators and make them self-censor.

@vaskaraeca Well it's easy to implement, works, because it sows terror related to a creator's livelihood, and if you appeal then they can say ”oopsie, our bad”.

Also my Hanlon's Razor got dull with experience.

@geerlingguy

@geerlingguy I honestly didn't even know you could use Jellyfin that way... I suspected but didn't know. I watched that video 2 years ago... guess I should be an expert Jellyfin pirate by now...
@geerlingguy Why don't you create a Rumble account?

@geerlingguy Sorry to hear they’re screwing you over.

As someone who switched from paying to have many different streamers available all the time to rotating among five or six streamers, only ever subscribing to one at a time: the $$$ savings is significant and we’re still watching everything we want to, just on a more structured schedule. A handy spreadsheet helps me keep track of which shows/movies we want to watch on each streamer as we get it. Easy peasy.

@geerlingguy Classic pod people behavior: first they duplicate you, then they dispose of the original.

I normally wouldn't recommend it but get some glyphosate and spray it around wherever you see those green tendrils and you should be okay.

@geerlingguy idk what that is but you could try posting on Rumble
@geerlingguy sounds like you need to listen to my douche tube song
@geerlingguy this was a great video. I continue to be more worried about useful content being pulled down from streaming platforms like YouTube.
