Oddball, computer nerd, aspiring ecosystem co-creator, I've lead a strange and unlikely life. I dropped out of high school and was homeless for several years. During that time I learned Reiki, and how to operate and program Linux computers. I decided to get a job as a programmer, so I created a project and presented it at CodeCon 2004. That led to a career as a computer programmer. I'm now semi-retired and I've turned my attention to my other passion: gardening and ecology.

> The first ‘active’ greenhouse to be built, as was discovered by chance in 2001 in a historical document, was in 15th century AD Korea. On the basis of the surviving document, entitled ‘Growing Vegetables During Winter’, a reconstruction of the greenhouse was made, and it was found to combine traditional heating technology with sophisticated heat retention features and control of condensation.

The World’s First ‘Active’ Greenhouse | London Korean Links

The greenhouse is an ancient invention, dating back 2,200 years. Modern ‘active’ greenhouses are distinguished from older ‘passive’ ones by the fact that they allow for the adjustment of air and soil temperature. Previously, the first such greenhouses were believed to have been built in Germany in 1619, using a stove to regulate air temperature,

I dreamed about a place called "Wildwood" last night. It was nearby, but off the main road (accessible by dirt roads), and had a food forest and gardens with plenty for everyone (humans and wildlife). I'm hoping it's one of those deja vu dreams, where this place actually exists and I'll be visiting it.

Silly rust tip, this did not do what I thought it would do:

let config_dir = Path::new("~/.config/my_app");
create_dir_all(config_dir)?;
let config_file = Path::new("~/.config/my_app/my_config")
write(config_file, thing_to_write);

This created a new directory "~" in my current working directory, and then created nested subdirs "./~/.config/my_app" and that's where my config file was written.

Looking for a nonviolent city-building sim specifically focused on rebuilding a city to cope with climate change - pointers?
That video is nine years old, so the food forest is now thirty-two years old.

These folks are inspirational.

> In the small town of Riverton at the bottom of New Zealand’s South Island is Robert and Robyn Guyton’s amazing 23-year-old food forest. The 2-acre property has been transformed from a neglected piece of land into a thriving ecosystem of native and exotic trees where birds and insects live in abundance.

Happy π Day! And Albert Einstein was born #OTD 147 years ago!

Isaac Newton used infinite series to compute π to 15 digits, later writing "I am ashamed to tell you to how many figures I carried these computations".

"I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world."
