#PSA #PayPal is changing their privacy statement/terms of service starting November so that they can sell your information to merchants.

You CAN opt out, but you have to do it before they start:

Settings > Data & Privacy > Manage shared info > Personalized shopping, and toggle that shit off

ETA: this is probably country specific, due to differing privacy laws.

You can try privacy>settings>recommendations

Check replies, people have found the same toggle under a different header.

#PSA #PayPal:

If you are going to reply to the post above with, "you forgot: delete app/delete paypal", please consider that:

1) other people have said this already

2) those who want or can, have already done so

3) some people have no other way to send and receive money

3a) unless you have a suggestion with an ethical, secure, and widely used/accepted alternative, shutting up is free.

@herhandsmyhands I, for one, am so tired of making massive efforts to move to more privacy oriented platforms only to discover the new one getting enshittified too.

@willaful There is only so many spoons to vet them too!

Like, people want to ignore the toll it takes to keep trying to live an ethical life under fucking late state capitalism.

/rant

(I know you know, I'm just. Tired i a good word. Fed up of the fuckers is another.)

@herhandsmyhands

3a is such a mood. Seriously.

@JoanGrey I am telling you, my patience for this bullshit has never been lower.
@herhandsmyhands Thanks, mine was already off for whatever reason

@steveportigal I plan on checking again on Nov 27 just in case they switch it on again.

(No, I don't trust them)

@herhandsmyhands just toggled that setting off :)
@herhandsmyhands
Not seeing "Manage shared info" etc after Data & Privacy! :(
@herhandsmyhands Thank you so much! This only takes seconds to do.
@herhandsmyhands @megmac Data & Privacy -> PayPal Shopping-> Personalized Shopping. Does PayPal have different settings hierarchy across countries?
@sunil it probably does, as privacy laws are different
@megmac
@herhandsmyhands @sunil @megmac I guess it does as I can’t see any of these menus that everyone is talking about. They’re probably going to sell all my data without any push-back from our authorities … (The Privacy link just shows the privacy statement.)

@jackyan

I see a PRIVACY heading, maybe there?

@sunil @megmac

@herhandsmyhands @sunil @megmac Unfortunately, no. Thank you for looking for me!

@jackyan

I wonder if it's under profile settings? poke around for something "data" related?

@sunil @megmac

@herhandsmyhands Thank you, I did, but nothing there … I wonder if itʼs worth writing to their privacy officer and formally requesting the opt-out. Their site is a mess, the menus seem to change on a regular basis and I often spend more time looking for where theyʼve shifted something to than doing the thing.

@sunil @megmac

@herhandsmyhands You can opt out after they start, though it does default to opt-in, so I get what you mean. If you're on web, an easy link to get there is:
https://www.paypal.com/myaccount/privacy/settings/recommendations
Log in to your PayPal account

Transfer money online in seconds with PayPal money transfer. All you need is an email address.

@twynn @herhandsmyhands Thanks! The web address offered the opt-out option. 🤞I’m in the US.
@herhandsmyhands Thanks! Just shared this with my whole family.
@herhandsmyhands No such setting currently, will be checking back though, thanks for the heads up 👍

@herhandsmyhands

Thank you for the warning.

I found a way that works in Canada.

I closed my account.

@herhandsmyhands they weren't before? Color me shocked.
@Beek It's probably more a, "some regulation takes place that will screw us if we don't notify you we've been selling your data, so here" thing than anything else.
@herhandsmyhands Fwiw looks like on paypal.ca it’s Data & Privacy > PayPal Shopping. Thanks!

@herhandsmyhands

I have a business account. Unfortunately neither of those instructions worked. Can you help?

@ReedsHorror I am sorry, I'm not an expert, I would try to continue poking at anything about shopping, privacy, data; it seems it's different depending on where you are and whether you use it on your phone or browser/desktop.

ETA: I don't have a business account myself, so I don't even know what you would be looking for or at, I'm sorry.

Check the other replies, some people have found the same toggle under a different header.

@herhandsmyhands

Thank you kindly for helping, all the same.

@ReedsHorror

There's someone else in the replies with a business account; from the screenshots, I wonder if it's under profile settings, something "data" or "shopping" related, maybe.

@herhandsmyhands I don't see that option??

@solonovamax As I said in another reply: I'm not an expert, I would try to continue poking at anything about shopping, privacy, data; it seems it's different depending on where you are and whether you use it on your phone or browser/desktop.

ETA: Check the other replies, some people have found the same toggle under a different header.

@herhandsmyhands And anyone who signs up after that is taken to be A-OK with it
@herhandsmyhands Interesting, mine was already turned off.

@herhandsmyhands I've considered deleting my account, but after writing checks got weird, Paypal and Venmo were all parents used for extracurricular activities. Kid's at college, and I'm still at it.

Any suggestions for alternatives?

Thank you for this!

@janisf I'm sorry to say I don't; I just try to be careful when using it.

@herhandsmyhands

Found it. It was on. Now it's not.

🙏🙏🙏

@herhandsmyhands Or better yet, dump PayPal altogether.
@herhandsmyhands @Lesliesez I'm not finding it on the mobile app in the US. But it could be because I'm using what's technically a commercial account, although I closed the company 20 years ago.

@nazgul

It does look like people with business accounts are having trouble finding it; as I don't have one myself, I am not of much help with those, I'm sorry.

@Lesliesez

@herhandsmyhands

In Deutschland:

PROFIL
- DATEN UND DATENSCHUTZ
- INTERESSENBASIERTE WERBUNG
- BEIDE SLIDER NACH LINKS

Und ja, dieser Schmutz ist tatsächlich per default aktiviert.

@herhandsmyhands found it under Profile > Data & Privacy > Interest-based marketing, even though I live in the EU. Thanks for the heads up!
@herhandsmyhands I'm guessing it's "Interest-based marketing" under Data and Privacy. Both options were switched to Off already. (This is in the UK)
@herhandsmyhands i found what you are talking about and toggled it off asap :)

@herhandsmyhands Thanks for the heads-up!

For my #NL #PayPal account under Settings > Data & #Privacy I did not have "Manage shared info" but did find "Interest-based marketing" where I had to click to toggle off. (Also reviewed "Manage your #cookie settings" while there)
