A reminder that Mastodon polls may appear to be anonymous, but the server/database admin(s) have access to individual voting data.

EDIT: And the poster, in their raw message archive! EDIT2: Not true for Mastodon! May be true for non-Mastodon servers like Akkoma.

@gamambel @farooqkz and the poll creator as well—by downloading the archive you can check who voted for which options
@xarvos @farooqkz @gamambel
Are you sure that's right? I'm looking through my Mastodon archive, and I can't see who voted for any of my polls.
@Edent @farooqkz @gamambel hmm i guess that isn’t the case for mastodon then. i’m on akkoma and they’re present in the archive

@xarvos @farooqkz @Edent

I also tried to find documentation on this, but failed. The whole thing should be better documented. A vote is an #ActivityPub message -- so where does it end up, if not in the archive?

@gamambel @xarvos This is the best description I've found
https://humberto.io/blog/mastodon_poll_in_activitypub/

A vote is a message. But unlike a favourite, the result isn't (usually) saved by the sender's server.

There's nothing stopping a receiving server from revealing who voted for what.

A report on how does the Mastodon Poll operations work in ActivityPub

Humberto Rocha

@Edent @xarvos

If it's not saved, how do they handle duplicate votes?

@gamambel @xarvos
Because the *receiving* server is the one tallying the votes.

@Edent @xarvos

Ah, yes. In my original reply, I was talking about the recipient server. What you are saying is that votes are not relayed from the recipient server to the poll creator? It is not the poll creator tallying votes, but their server? And Akkoma is handling that differently?

@gamambel I think we have our terminology backwards.

I post a poll.
You send a vote.
My server receives that vote and increments the counter.
You refresh my post and see the updated count.

My server (Mastodon) doesn't tell me who voted for what. But it *could*.

Your server (probably) doesn't record which user voted for what. But it *could*.

@Edent According to the website you referred to, Poll is a (non-standard) subtype of Question. With questions, I assume that replies (votes) go to the poll creator, not only to their server. You are saying that the Mastodon server filters out Question replies that contain votes, and does not pass them on to the creator.

@gamambel
I am on Mastodon.
When you vote on my polls, I do not see which option you voted for. Nor do I see that you voted at all.

Polls are anonymous to the creator.

All I see is the results.

@Edent @gamambel unless you own the server, which is a Common thing in the fediverse. We should really really warn how non anonymous mastodon Polls are (or can be). Not for the Polo Initiator but surely not against both server admin teams and the developers

@Edent @gamambel As an example for the latter:

I'm working on a custom ActivityPub backend for my website. It's early stage, but I'm half-seriously considering federating my software project pages (https://fietkau.software) as polls and let people rate them on a five-star scale. And if you additionally reply to the poll, the site would show your rating (vote) next to your comment, as a "review".

Going back and forth on whether it'd be funny for all involved or violate too many expectations.

Software

This is where you can find resources about my various software projects. These are exclusively projects I consider “mine,” so anything I have worked on as part of a bigger team or have only made minor contributions to will not be listed here.

@gamambel @xarvos @farooqkz @Edent

Well, the documentation for this is in the specs.
It is all a `Question` type which can optionally have `oneOf` or `anyOf` if it'a a non-open-question.
Apart from formal spec., there is also a section on how to represent https://www.w3.org/TR/activitystreams-vocabulary/#questions

A sidenote:
It was said that akkoma makes the votes public in the Archive but this must depend on if the inReplyTo was sent as Public https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/#client-addressing

Activity Vocabulary

@sl007 @xarvos @farooqkz @Edent

You may be right, but it's not obvious to me. Since votes are replies to Questions, it is not inherently clear to me why these messages *directed to me as creator* (?) are not available in my ActivityPub stream. Just because the UI does not expose them, it doesn't tell me if they are really not available. Regardless of Public status or not, since they are replies to *my* Question?

I don't see this being addressed in the spec.

@gamambel It isn't a question of the spec, it's about implementation.

There's nothing in the spec which says you have to be notified when someone favourites your post. But, by common convention, you are.

@sl007 @gamambel @farooqkz @Edent

It was said that akkoma makes the votes public in the Archive but this must depend on if the inReplyTo was sent as Public

no, i said that it’s available to the poll creator, not public.

i also can’t find that information on the linked section—i don’t think the specs state anything about archives

@gamambel @farooqkz but training the DNN is needed!
@gamambel @farooqkz Would you have posted this comment if the poll had been "hands up if you're a Baptist?" Or "a Catholic?"

@anne_twain @farooqkz

Probably not! I am generally not a fan of organized cults, regardless of religion, but given the demographics of Mastodon, and my own cultural background, I see Muslims blamed and attacked more often than Christians, as Christians happen to be in power in Mastodonland.

If Mastodon was Arab dominated, it would probably be reversed.

@gamambel @farooqkz I would have thought that Muslims know all about anti-Muslim discrimination and hatred and I wouldn't presume to warn them or give them advice about it.

@anne_twain They may know about discrimination and hatred to varying degrees, and still appreciate information regarding data protection and privacy on this platform. Even I still don't know exactly how it works, because it is not documented well. And I have a CS major, worked close to ActivityPub dev, and similar projects, for 20+ years.

My post was boosted 20 times and starred 42 times so far. Looks like the reminder was appreciated by others.

@anne_twain You may have experienced that people didn't welcome your contributions, and took offense? It would make me sad to not receive information that may or may not be useful to me. If I already know it, it doesn't hurt to be reminded. I generally do not presume people do anything with bad intentions. That would make me feel offended a lot. I can appreciate their attempt at helping me, even if in a particular situation I may have already been aware. I know others who experience it the same.
@anne_twain Also, the reminder did not go to "Muslims" specifically. It also serves to remind those who were thinking about voting "not Muslim". Privacy regarding religion is an very important good, and it's there for a reason. You may think it is about singling out Muslims, but it can very well serve to single out non-Muslims. The trigger for me to respond was "disclosure of religion", plus "privacy implications not documented well".
@gamambel So, why did you think that the poster needed your information and help?

@anne_twain What is the point you are trying to make here? "Do not share information, because the other person may already be aware, and may feel offended if they already do"?

Sounds like we have a very different approach to social interactions and knowledge sharing. Not sure if it's possible to unwrap to the full degree. I feel like I already responded to your question? What else do you want to hear?

@gamambel I just asked a couple of questions.
@anne_twain I felt that pointing out the privacy implications was a valuable contribution to the thread. (Like anything anyone contributes.) It was not necessarily meant to be directed only at the poster of the poll, but also at other people following it. I assume some read it and were already aware (like you?), so not everyone may have benefitted from the information equally. But some may have. Since it was boosted 20 times, it looks like it was not only sent but also received as valuable.
@gamambel @farooqkz I'm watching you @jenbanim in case there's voter suppression
@farooqkz For reference, ~25% of the world population is Muslim.
@farooqkz #Episcopalians are almost as rare 😉

@farooqkz

Unsurprisingly, I'm in the majority.

That doesn't mean I'm a follower of or believer in any religion/god/prophet/sky fairy/spirituality. The entire concept is ludicrous, IMHO.

I don't care what others believe, unless they start telling me I have to follow their particular belief's rules, or that laws should reflect certain religious beliefs (thus forcing non-believers or followers of other beliefs to follow their rules).

@farooqkz
OK, but I'm not a regular, like not a practising not a Muslim. 😘 I mean, I'm not obnoxious about it. ❤️ Just a cultural not a Muslim.
@punishmenthurts @farooqkz ah another member of the "atheist but not a jerk about it" tribe!
@farooqkz It would be interesting to know what part of the non-muslims believe in God and what part is atheist.
@farooqkz I am a human , and love is my god!
@farooqkz Why do we need to see that? It is a personal issue, not a public interest. I mean what’s even your point? Is this Facebook?
@farooqkz God damn. I'm starting to think fedi is just the whitest of places. So disappointing
@farooqkz I believe in a Higher Power. God, Allah or whatever people call it. I don’t believe one religion is the only “right” religion.

@farooqkz

Clearly not enough, or people of colour. Lots of white LGBTIQA & Neurodivergent, but otherwise much too bland.

@farooqkz
I am not voting on this as there are not enough options. I am not a muslim, but equally I am not a christian either, nor am I an hinduist. I don't like gods in general as I find them sadly lacking a sense of humour. If I had to choose I'd probably choose Odin. But saying 'not muslim' while true does not really clarify how I feel about religion.
@farooqkz from the people I know on Mastodon, the result would be the same for any religion
@brab @farooqkz I would expect here are more #Pastafaris than in the average population ;-)
