A reminder that Mastodon polls may appear to be anonymous, but the server/database admin(s) have access to individual voting data.

EDIT: And the poster, in their raw message archive! EDIT2: Not true for Mastodon! May be true for non-Mastodon servers like Akkoma.

@gamambel @farooqkz Would you have posted this comment if the poll had been "hands up if you're a Baptist?" Or "a Catholic?"

@anne_twain @farooqkz

Probably not! I am generally not a fan of organized cults, regardless of religion, but given the demographics of Mastodon, and my own cultural background, I see Muslims blamed and attacked more often than Christians, as Christians happen to be in power in Mastodonland.

If Mastodon was Arab dominated, it would probably be reversed.

@gamambel @farooqkz I would have thought that Muslims know all about anti-Muslim discrimination and hatred and I wouldn't presume to warn them or give them advice about it.

@anne_twain They may know about discrimination and hatred to varying degrees, and still appreciate information regarding data protection and privacy on this platform. Even I still don't know exactly how it works, because it is not documented well. And I have a CS major, worked close to ActivityPub dev, and similar projects, for 20+ years.

My post was boosted 20 times and starred 42 times so far. Looks like the reminder was appreciated by others.

@anne_twain You may have experienced that people didn't welcome your contributions, and took offense? It would make me sad to not receive information that may or may not be useful to me. If I already know it, it doesn't hurt to be reminded. I generally do not presume people do anything with bad intentions. That would make me feel offended a lot. I can appreciate their attempt at helping me, even if in a particular situation I may have already been aware. I know others who experience it the same.
@anne_twain Also, the reminder did not go to "Muslims" specifically. It also serves to remind those who were thinking about voting "not Muslim". Privacy regarding religion is an very important good, and it's there for a reason. You may think it is about singling out Muslims, but it can very well serve to single out non-Muslims. The trigger for me to respond was "disclosure of religion", plus "privacy implications not documented well".
@gamambel So, why did you think that the poster needed your information and help?

@anne_twain What is the point you are trying to make here? "Do not share information, because the other person may already be aware, and may feel offended if they already do"?

Sounds like we have a very different approach to social interactions and knowledge sharing. Not sure if it's possible to unwrap to the full degree. I feel like I already responded to your question? What else do you want to hear?

@gamambel I just asked a couple of questions.
@anne_twain I felt that pointing out the privacy implications was a valuable contribution to the thread. (Like anything anyone contributes.) It was not necessarily meant to be directed only at the poster of the poll, but also at other people following it. I assume some read it and were already aware (like you?), so not everyone may have benefitted from the information equally. But some may have. Since it was boosted 20 times, it looks like it was not only sent but also received as valuable.
