Well, here I am #mastodon. I never thought the day would come, but I've decided to join a different social media platform.
To be honest, I'm really sick of #twitter or #x (whatever) and all the bullshit that happens on that shitty site. Even though most of my memories and followers are over there, let's see how this goes.

I may not be the first to tell you this, but while Mastodon does superficially resemble Twitter, there are some fundamental differences in how it works with respect to how to get posts appearing on your feed. I'd suggest searching and/or following the #Feditips tag to find a lot of toots to get you started.

As you begin to follow a number of other people and groups here, youβll likely wish to check out the βlistβ feature. You can use that to subdivide your feed in a way that feels natural to you.

I'm currently using elk.zone and looks more like old Twitter than X does today... but I hear great things about several others, too.

Here are a few quick tips.
- You'll miss the ads for about 1 minute.
- Follow people to have their posts show up in your feed, there is no algorithm to do that for you.
- Use mute and block when people bug you, it's your feed.
- A "like" tells the poster you liked something; a "boost" tells your followers that you liked something.
- You have already stopped missing the ads.

Hey welcome Jenna! Before you put the work into figuring stuff out, take a look at the 'flavour' of different instances and find one that suits you. There's a list at https://mastodonservers.net/
If you prefer you can treat .social (where you are now) as your training wheels, and just take a look at where the people you follow tend to come from and move there in six months.
(This matters because your toots are only visible on your local instance, unless someone boosts you or already follows you. I'm sure someone will tell us if I have that wrong ;-) )

Oh, we have our own varieties of bullshit here too π We're just used to blocking, muting, and reporting.
One starting hint: Immediately follow a bunch of hashtag, like 30-40 of them. No algorithm here, so that's how to get the content you want.
Do your city/state/area, sport (teams), hobbies, #cats, #bloomscrolling , and ask others for suggestions.
And welcome.
Make and introduction post about who you are. Add hashtags about your interests. Pin it to the top of your feed.

The first few weeks here, I found it difficult to take off the gundam armor I had needed on the Hellsite. Hit the Explore button a lot. If someone seems fun or interesting, follow them right away. You can always go back and prune your Follow list once you're good to go.

I love it. It does a few things better. for me, the main one was when I was looking at a profile on another instance - it showed a lot more info (more complete follower / following lists)

Howdy, a couple accounts that will help you get up to speed with the Fediverse and Mastodon:
@FediTips for all kinds of helpful info, be sure to check out their website linked on the profile
@FediFollows posts threads of interesting accounts to follow based on a theme (ex: astronomy). And there's a website on that profile that has collated those accounts so you can find some people to follow and get your feed going right away.
Hope you enjoy it over here, been here since Melon first made the offer to buy, killed my Twitter account the day it was announced the deal was done, haven't gone back since and don't miss it. Get more interesting interactions here than I ever did in the decade I was there.
@lane_ass_jenna You are welcome π I didn't delete my account but I deleted everything the site would let me, every tweet and retweet I could, gone. I haven't logged into it in 2 years now and I recall them saying they were going to start canning accts that didn't have activity so I wouldn't be shocked if mine was dead by now.
I did delete my FB acct at the same time though. I'm done with any place whose owners are willing to platform fascist fucks. Soon as FB said they were giving Mango Mussolini back his account I told my friends I was out. Sadly few followed suit and joined me here. But that's ok. My principles, sanity, and mental health take precedence at this point. I can't even watch that Orange DUMBster fire on mute. Sick of seeing his damn face.
Fediverse isn't perfect, to be sure. Anyone can make a server so there's a fair number of trolls and there's some moderation issues across the place that need to be addressed. However, moving to this part of the social media universe has removed some of the anger inducing stuff from my life, so that's an improvement.
