Silicon Valley Tech investors used to claim they were backing companies "to make a world a better place”, and to some extent they were (fooling themselves into) believing that.

But now it seems like most prominent venture capital partners from a16z, Sequoia, Founders Fund, Craft Ventures ... are spending their days spouting very nationalistic bigoted pro-Trump ideology on X.

Are there any still, not entirely batshit crazy, VCs in the US?

And now … ex-Silicon Valley VC JD Vance becomes Trump’s running mate.

“Vance moved to San Francisco to work in the tech industry as a venture capitalist. He served as a principal at Peter Thiel's firm, Mithril Capital, between 2016 and 2017.“

Donald Trump Vice Presidential Pick Is JD Vance

Donald Trump tapped JD Vance as his running mate, elevating to the Republican presidential ticket a venture capitalist-turned-senator whose embrace of populist politics garnered national attention and made him a rising star in the party.

My thoughts on Silicon Valley's love affair with Trump

Please someone bring a camera when you're breaking the news to a16z's Marc Andreessen, who said he was forced to support Trump because Lina Khan was preventing his fund to get exits.

https://www.thebignewsletter.com/p/trump-enforcers-affirm-lina-khans

The amount of accepted bigotry in Silicon Valley VC circles, especially around a16z and Sequoia partners, is quite remarkable. I'm honestly quite stunned that some European pension and sovereign funds are still investing with them.
a16z's Andreessen who counts university endowments amongst its investors says: “I view Stanford and MIT as mainly political lobbying operations fighting American innovation at this point [...] They declared war on 70% of the country and now they’re going to pay the price”.

“What’s happened to Silicon Valley? Why did the Ayn Rand–loving heroes of tech become Donald Trump’s bootlickers?”

“[Tech VCs and CEOs] may believe that submitting to Trump’s protection racket protects their shareholders. But tech giants are certainly capable of standing up for the long-term viability of their industry. And for democracy. So far they are doing the opposite. "

I Thought I Knew Silicon Valley. I Was Wrong

Tech got what it wanted by electing Trump. A year later, it looks more like a suicide pact.

WIRED

Silicon Valley Tech CEOs, who have long been claiming to champion free speech, have effectively been muzzled by this administration.
Caught between their fiduciary duty and Trump’s intimidations, none has the courage to speak up first.
This is almost a textbook case of a prisoner’s dilemma.

“A large part of the venture capital model is serving as a recruitment mechanism into tech fascism. You’ve got all these people with these companies who want this money from the venture capitalists, and increasingly it’s seen as sort of a litmus test of whether you're gonna go along with these ideas.”

Méfiance donc quand des VC affiliés avec le #NerdReich cherchent à rentrer au capital des boîtes européennes.

Great podcast episode with Christine Lagarde.

Europe has talent, which needs funding. The #CapitalMarketsUnion is urgent.

“Instead of having these massive savings travel across the Atlantic to be invested in the US and for US investors and venture capitalists to then come back to possibly invest in some selected projects which suits them. We should just indicate that there is a will and there is a way to invest in Europe.”

The 🇺🇸 VC ecosystem has been doing the same thing with private money in Europe. American VC-backed companies with their deep pockets have been running services at loss in order to eliminate competition for a long time, knowing that because of the deeper capital markets in the US they can win at that game.

We need the #CapitalMarketsUnion now!

Tech MAGA (Palantir, Anduril, Thiel, A16Z ... ) : This administration has reimagined munitions as consumables. We're no longer going to keep them on the shelf. In order for our revenue to go up, they are going to continously expend them, which means that we're going to have to replenish them.

Silicon Valley VCs are benefitting from these regular pointless strikes because it “causes a demand signal" for them to produce more ammunition.

If the missiles are really rotting in storage, I know of a European democracy that would have great use for them in self defense.
@fj @patrickhadfield And certainly not with US healthcare quality and costs. Bankrupt in their first three weeks. And that is just the start of the rape.

@fj It's the same reason Canadians aren't being lured back to the US with deals and discounts after the "51 state threat". Our sovereignty can't be bought.

This concept seems alien to many Americans.

@fj what's weird is, that an army can't work well with capitalist principles - when you're dead, you don't get anything from dollars anymore. Maybe your offspring and other people, but most would rather have you alive, I guess, or you have to be paid really well. So motive to be a soldier is better with principles and higher values that you are "defending". Not sure what soldiers would do, if they are told to take Greenland?

@fj I prob agree with this podcast (haven’t listened yet), but I wish it were also easier to immigrate to Europe (for me in particular, France).

I was able to move here, but because of its complexity I ended up only getting an education visa which (I didn’t know this at first) wouldn’t give me to right to work for non-French companies.

I would like to pay taxes to France for 2025, but I can’t (I’ll be paying in the US).

@zed There is an immigration angle on the EU startup strategy

There's this thing though in the end when Christine Lagarde is talking about using russian assets to help Ukraine:
- We have to respect international law.
- What signal would it send?

This is just stupid imo. Russia doesn't give a shit about international law. It would send a signal that if you break international law - we would reciprocate.

Analyse brillante d’Antonio Spadaro:
https://legrandcontinent.eu/fr/2026/04/04/refutation-spadaro-thiel/

@fj I’m quite stunned you still go to X to look at this stuff 😉
@fj as someone with literal decades of experience dealing with Sand Hell Road and their ilk, I can tell you for fact, it's *ALWAYS* been an exclusive club for the most disgusting, bigoted, racist pieces of shit who very very much don't want anyone to know that's exactly what they are and always have been.
@fj Those racist losers hallucinate enemies with agendas everywhere because their white supremacist mania drives them to push their own very real agenda to dominate a reengineered "West" (aka White Man's Empire).
@fj ethnic group code 😬
@fj pretty sure there's going to be leopards eating selective faces, based on campaign contributions and patronage of certain hotels.
@fj because let's face it, you don't suspend enforcement of the FCPA for no reason.

@fj look at this marvelous paragraph from NYT: «Mr. Thiel’s relationship with Mr. Trump has since soured while Mr. Vance’s ties to the former president have strengthened. At a conference in Aspen, Colo., last month, Mr. Thiel said he would vote for Mr. Trump only “if you hold a gun to my head.”»

They are only interested in having access to the WH through Vance, nothing else.

How Trump’s Running Mate J.D. Vance is Connected to Silicon Valley

Mr. Vance spent less than five years in Silicon Valley’s tech industry, but the connections he made with Peter Thiel and others became crucial to his political ascent.

The New York Times

@rpaulo That quote is deceptive, or someone is really holding a gun to his head because he did also say he's voting for Trump.

“Peter Thiel said he’d vote for Donald Trump over Joe Biden but he won’t provide money to the Republican presumptive nominee’s super PAC.”

Peter Thiel says, 'If you hold a gun to my head I'll vote for Trump' though he isn't backing campaign

Peter Thiel said on Thursday that he'd vote for Donald Trump over Joe Biden but he won't provide money to Republican presumptive nominee's super PAC.

CNBC
@fj I think that says he’s not going to vote for anyone. He doesn’t need to anyway because Biden gets all the electoral votes from CA.
@fj o império do Japão e a Coreia do Sul são muito superiores ao patético mundo democrático ocidental do infame vale.

@fj Wonder how long until Biden names Sarah Kendzior a special election campaign advisor.

Because there is nothing quite like an actual expert in authoritarian geronto-kleptocracies who forecasted Trump in 2013-2015 (view from flyover country) vs a wannabe expert who surged the hype post-fact (that’s how he got his VC position).

@fj As an aside, how does someone like Peter Thiel love Lord of the Rings so much that he names companies after it (Mithril, Palantir, Valar), and yet decide to be Sauron?

@zenkat @fj

Are these folks on the Fediverse anywhere? (Seems like an obvious move would be to set up their own instance?)

@fj For them, that *is* making the world the better place, unfortunately.
@fj I haven't investigated them in much detail but I suspect many of the VCs on The Pitch podcast might clear this (admittedly not very high) bar.
@fj Money >>>> democracy
@fj Paul Graham kept being sane as of the last time I checked in early 2023.
@fj I moved around those valley VC circles in the late 90s through to the mid 2000s, and they were all, behind closed doors, shockingly right-wing in their views and opinions. they all liked Bush until they didn't. they had a slight whisper thin veneer of libertarianism in that they didn't care if their employees were gay, and they were generally atheist. their politics were to support "whoever cuts my taxes".
