This week's post and video explain how I've managed to live most of my life without owning a car.

Can you live without a car?

When you live in a very car-dependent society, it might be hard to imagine, but you can live without owning a car. I’ve done so for almost my entire life. I did learn to drive, back in 1984, but I …

As usual, @simon is so good at putting his finger on how things have shifted in this specific moment (as in literally early May 2026) in software development.

Vibe coding and agentic engineering are getting closer than I’d like

I recently talked with Joseph Ruscio about AI coding tools for Heavybit’s High Leverage podcast: Ep. #9, The AI Coding Paradigm Shift with Simon Willison. Here are some of my …

Interesting perspective on AI from the mathematical community, which rhymes with the discussions around the value of “taste” in the software engineering community — the highest value-add work is shifting from writing good code by hand (hunter-gathering raw ingredients in a food-scarce society) to steering / scaffolding / scrutinizing agents in your context so they output good code at scale (home cooking in a food-abundant society).

Charcuterie is a visual Unicode symbol explorer. Click around, search, or use the pencil in the upper left to draw the shape you’re looking for. This is very cool. https://charcuterie.elastiq.ch/

You'll likely catch this image a million times in your various feeds: Earth as seen by Reid Wiseman from Artemis II en-route to the Moon.

My first thought? That's *really* noisy 🧐

But then I realised – it's the *nightside* of Earth, illuminated by the almost full Moon, not the Sun 🌕

The bright limb at lower-right is where the dayside starts, & the fact that you can see aurorae, airglow, & cities in Europe, Africa, & S & N America also gives the game away.

Cool.
