Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has filed articles of impeachment against U.S. Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito- MSNBC #SCOTUS #AOC
@GottaLaff Excellent! Keep up the pressure.

@GottaLaff This sounds great but I’m sure there will be someone who comes along to explain why this was a stupid/bad idea.

Symbolic or not, I feel it’s needed

@Fenix @GottaLaff

They will but they'll be Republicans and Russians likely and not worth listening to.

@jenzi @Fenix People keep focusing on that. The point is public exposure, hearings, pressure. Clearly they won't be impeached in a GOP House.
@GottaLaff @jenzi @Fenix Will the articles get a hearing on the floor? That's my only question. I'm assuming Republicans control what hearings are held in the House but I could be wrong about this. Making a stink on TV about the GOP not allowing hearings would be another option, I guess.
@tobie1 Totally good point. Maybe the political fight that ensues would get some attention though. @jenzi @Fenix

@tobie1 @GottaLaff @jenzi @Fenix

"Will the articles get a hearing on the floor? "

No. That's not how it works when the minority party files articles of impeachment. Instead the articles sit on a shelf, gathering dust until the term of congress expires. Do you remember the 2017 articles of impeachment of mangolini? No? That's because they went nowhere. Not even a blip in the media, except a local district note of the critter who filed them.

Filing articles of impeachment when you're in the minority party accomplishes nothing. It's a political stunt catering to the hyperaware party faithful. It's also a stunt if you're in the majority, unless the Speaker is on board.

@artemesia It's a stunt yes, but it gets press and draws attention to a major issue. I'm glad she's doing it. @tobie1 @jenzi @Fenix

@artemesia @tobie1 @GottaLaff @jenzi @Fenix

I wonder if this might add to the pressure Merrick Garland is under, now that two Senators have just requested these two justices be investigated by a special prosecutor?

@GottaLaff @jenzi @Fenix

But we can dream of taking back the house and kicking the two of them out on their 🍑’s

🥾 🚪 👋

@WmShakesp3are @GottaLaff @Fenix

Good reason to start now, bring it to the floor when you get power. Just another reason to vote in more Democrats, hopefully this will motivate people. Then we can hope that a public hearing would at least garner support to pack the court.

@jenzi i believe the support is there. I HATE that term. It’s not packing the court when you are matching justices to federal judicial districts. 13 districts = 13 justices. Simple. SCOTUS has had 6 changes of the number of justices since 1897 (I might have the year wrong).

@Fenix @GottaLaff It’s symbolic, but I never understood why people think symbols are unimportant. Symbols are often the most powerful way to convey and popularize an idea.

Anyone who doesn’t believe that should take a look at the Catholic Church.

@GottaLaff
If the #GOP can hold dozens of votes to take away healthcare, the #Dems can certainly force some votes to impeach the most obviously corrupted and conflicted #SCOTUS judges.
@GottaLaff @TCatInReality
It's not votes though since Moscow Mike has the gavel.
@GreenFire @GottaLaff
It's a start. Then it can move more quickly in late Jan 2025

@TCatInReality @GottaLaff
It's already worked since it's drawn more attention to the corrupt justices, but I also don't want attention to be deflected from Whitehouse's subcommittee sending a request to the Attorney General to assign a special counsel to investigate Clarence Thomas either.

I'd like to get enough public pressure on the AG to do just that.

@GreenFire @TCatInReality @GottaLaff

it is definitely time to get all eyes on the SCOTUS now. Workplace changes considering personal time etc. are on a LIGHTINING FAST PACE considering the possilbity of a no-overtime-pay ruling and since all regulation right now is just "decoration" as I saw it called, we need to closely watch it.

Everyone NEEDS to be watching SCOTUS cases now.

We are gonna have to have our attention in multiple places at once in the near future.

@artisanrox @GreenFire @GottaLaff
💯

#Dems need to be running on a "Save the #SCOTUS " platform.

And that requires a #BlueTrifecta2024. They need to be open and loud about seeking that.

@TCatInReality @GottaLaff

No, they can't "force some votes". That's not how this works at all. I'd leave you to your fantasies, but I know you'll be back in a few months moaning about do-nothing democrats and blaming them for the cold hard reality of being the House minority party this term of congress. So I'll tell you now: nothing will happen as a result of these articles of impeachment. Articles of impeachment don't even get a vote without the Speaker's blessing, as Pelosi amply demonstrated.

C'mon folks, it's recent history.

@GottaLaff And NYT miscalculated when they get Nancy riled up too

@Smootasaurus @GottaLaff wtf nyt...

The bias has been obvious but that's beyond the pale.

@Smootasaurus @GottaLaff This is good, but I really wish she’d had pivoted to how horrific Trump is. “You mean the best person to defeat that convicted felon and rapist, the one who spouts garbled nonsense at his rallies? The one who will outlaw abortion and contraception and gay marriage, and has threatened to have his enemies executed? The one whose backers want to end democracy? Yes, Jaala, I think Joe Biden, a decent, honest, accomplished man, can beat him.”
@michaelgemar @GottaLaff There was another clip I saw where Nancy did pivot, I think it was today. Whenever it was, she's fired up
@Smootasaurus @GottaLaff
Don't mess with us older folks. We've learned patience and tactics. And we don't give up.
@GottaLaff
Lisa Rubin just pointed out that a prominent judicial group is *also* taking some action against Thomas and Alito!
@n69n @GottaLaff also, on Allison Gill’s (@MuellerSheWrote) “Cleanup On Aisle 45” podcast last night, Allison reported that Senate Dems are trying to work with House Dems to issue SCOTUS subpoenas. Apparently Senate needs a majority vote to do so, which they don’t have, but the House has a lower threshold? This helps explain why the Senate thus far has only been delivering letters, requests, and meeting invites to SCOTUS, much to our frustration. Fingers crossed they’ll make progress.
@GottaLaff
She is a force to be reckoned with, I like that in a woman. She said she’d do it and she did.
Whatever comes of it, she has the courage to do the right thing.
@GottaLaff finally someone stepping it up.
@GottaLaff everyone on the side of Presidential immunity should be kicked off now. The authors of the Constitution are rolling in their graves.
@GottaLaff hopefully it will do something, even if it's just putting them on the record as being corrupt.
@AtheistIntelligence @GottaLaff No SCOTUS justice has been successfully impeached before. Why would it change now?
@mansr Get it on the record, publicly as J6 Committee did. That's the point. Of course they won't impeach him. @AtheistIntelligence
@GottaLaff With the way the entire Supreme Court has been acting lately, the best thing to do at this point would be to get rid every Justice and replace everyone, preferably before the November election.
@Nahmia EVERY justice? Are you seeing the same court I am?
@Nahmia Never mind. 0 followers in 7 months. See ya.

@GottaLaff a little bit of sanity! Gotta do the things a sane person would do in the face of rampant corruption.

If you think "oh they'll just get away with it anyway" you're ultimately just enabling them.

Make the corrupt answer for their behaviour. Make them and their cronies publicly explain themselves and wear it. Get it into public record, 'cuz there's always going to be a next time, and as the snowball grows it gets very heavy.

@ottaross exactly. We know this goes nowhere, but get it on the record!
@ottaross Ross I love the snowball analogy!
@ottaross @GottaLaff you’ve reminded me of something I was thinking last night. I wish “our side” would stop sarcastic diminution of threats. Like “Nothing to see here, folks, just [awful thing that happened].” Or “Oh good, now they’re talking openly about killing liberals. Cool, cool. This is fine.” I think framing statements that way places them at a remove, like a joke that we’re all in on. But that might also promote a feeling of resignation, even if not on purpose.
@roque @GottaLaff definitely contributes to normalization.
@GottaLaff What does it mean if they are impeached? Are there actual consequences? Trump was impeached and nothing happened.
@Yup_Its_Holly He wasn't convicted.
@GottaLaff Oh… I clearly don’t understand how impeachment works.
@Yup_Its_Holly Lol, articles of impeachment have to be passed in the House before a Senate trial to convict happen.
@GottaLaff I don't know anything about how impeachment works. What would it do, and can this actually pass?
