With one party we can talk about shitty elected officials and run for office and campaign to get more progressive candidates in office. In the other there are never trustworthy elections or checks and balances ever again. Stop fucking following Russian bot taking points. They are not the same.
You either want a messy democracy or no democracy.
Nobody is thrilled with Biden’s handling of a lot of shit, but at least with the Democrats there’s hope to have presidents not just figureheads, monarchs, and oligarchs for the rest of our lives and several generations’. Grow the hell up.
The Supreme Court coup and decisions this week should make it abundantly clear where we are headed and exactly what theocrats and the ultra wealthy want. The next president could easily choose several justices.
I’ve absolutely had it with wish-washy people relatively safe in their privilege both sidsing this shit. Vote. Be active locally. Use your voice.
The rest of us have legitimate expat escape plans at this point for our own safety or that of our loved ones.
@hacks4pancakes where? The entire world swings hard right, and the south is becoming unlivable
@stooovie it wouldn’t be a safe escape plan if I shared. There’s a lot of safer options, though.
@hacks4pancakes @stooovie Its "one world" like the song says. Even the more stable countries and regions will suffer instability, depression, violence, intolerant mobs and what-have-you. Unless you're hitching a ride to Mars with Musk, (yes, that's sarcasm) we all have to stick it out and try to get some kind of rationality to prevail. People are starting to see that the worst gas-lighting on every issue is created by identifiable people. They are a minority, and they can be stopped.
@hacks4pancakes I sure do wish I had a legit expat escape plan.
@hacks4pancakes one friend already bailed to another country, a couple years ago. :(
@ExplodingLemur it’s getting to that situation. Blue states could easily stop being able to shelter LGBTQIA people or women’s rights in a couple years.
@hacks4pancakes @ExplodingLemur Cities like Chicago are going to be hit hard. IIlinois is a red state without Chicago.

@Mea @hacks4pancakes @ExplodingLemur

Maybe i shouldn't generalize without knowing this as a fact but i think most states are red if you remove their biggest cities

@RnDanger @hacks4pancakes @ExplodingLemur This is true but Trump as POTUS threatened Chicago with military action back when he had advisors walking him back from breaking laws like Posse Comitatus.
@Mea @RnDanger @ExplodingLemur we are also having bus loads of hungry, lost migrants dumped without help or explanation in the middle of the night in our train stations as retribution.
@hacks4pancakes the main thing stopping me is the loved ones having a harder time being able to make it out😿
@hacks4pancakes , this crap has been giving me anxiety for years and it only gets worse as we approach January.
@ig88ds things are very bad and not enough people are taking real societal collapse seriously

@hacks4pancakes @ig88ds

How do you get away from societal collapse? It will affect everyone everywhere.

@railmeat I fantasize about living in the woods and leaving society behind. I know this is unrealistic as I have no survival skills and crap will eventually reach me no matter where I go, but a guy can dream.
But seriously: be safe, keep up with current events, and adapt your plans as necessary. I fear Manny people will at very least lose their voice (if not other rights) as the steamroller keeps going. Big business and lobbying groups have bought off politicians on both sides. Conservatives are just being more overt about it. Long term prosperity of individual citizens hasn't been in the cards for a while but this year will be the year of end stage capitalism and oligarchs.
@hacks4pancakes , I would think I've give insane over the current state of things if it weren't for the support of others, especially my wife. I deeply feel that everyone equally deserves an equal opportunity to be happy and prosper. I can't fathom the level of insensitivity going on.

@hacks4pancakes It's also worth remembering that 1) there are no real safe destinations, just less fucked-up ones, and 2) it takes a heck of a lot of privilege to be able to move somewhere else.

Fight it where you are.

@hacks4pancakes Oh, and 3) if you are moving from the US to elsewhere, you are pretty much guaranteed to be gentrifying at your destination, taking housing from the locals, and contributing to making it unaffordable for them.
@sindarina @hacks4pancakes Ironically, not in Canada, considering their housing situation is even worse.

@WhiteCatTamer @sindarina @hacks4pancakes
Also as a US/Canadian expat, our coming elections threaten to send Canada down the radical right road

And people here don’t seem to realize it mostly means continuing to sell off our healthcare system and any hope their kids will ever own a home

Both of which will contribute to what the RCMP describes as social inequity leading to wider societal collapse

When the cops warn the government about disasters, housing and inequality, things are getting bad

@hacks4pancakes what worries me is that I know of people who have already escaped, and there is no way I could think of them as paranoid. It's real.
@hacks4pancakes That’s the part I think most passive folks don’t understand, sadly 😢
@hacks4pancakes My traditionally conservative parents have been pushing me to ensure my paperwork for my dual citizenship is in order. I wondered why they were suddenly interested. 🙃

@hacks4pancakes the most difficult part for a lot of people, i think, is breaking with politely tolerating Uncle Redhat, loudly rebuking them every time they repeat the maga chants.

to resist, we have to be assholes.

@hacks4pancakes
I read yesterday that 46 million watched the debate...
330+ million people in the U.S. so apparently there are a whole lot of people that are not paying attention to what is happening to our nation.
@palin I didn’t watch it, I knew how dismal it would be. Very much paying attention. I read up on everything extensively after. It was even worse.
@hacks4pancakes
Don't blame you.
I made it about 2 minutes, listened to the convicted felon spew out lies about Afghanistan ,
seeing President Biden (sick) with a look of total disgust on his face.
@palin so many people sthinkbtheyre secure in their comfort and diversions and don’t know how fast that can crumble.
@hacks4pancakes yeah we are clearly in facscism now with the court rulings. I mean it can get a lot worse too, let’s avoid that, but this is our present. :/
@zackstern @hacks4pancakes How we work out the coming election will be part of what influences how far down our rock bottom will get.
@hacks4pancakes @catsalad It’s not unlikely that Trump/GOP will expand the court, and pack it with MAGA loonies.

@hacks4pancakes

As could the current one.

How on earth did an unelected group of judges who are political appointees (for life!) become a thing? It's the least democratic thing I've ever seen.

Looking from the outside (in a country where the judiciary and political branches of government are strictly separated), it looks insane.

Surprised it took this long for something like this to happen.

@catsalad

@hacks4pancakes did I miss the Democrats actually stepping up to to do anything about preventing monarchs or getting rid of our oligarchs?

They were right there on Jan 6th and then a couple weeks later Dems illegally allowed dozens of insurrectionists to be seated in public office. They did nothing to stop purjuring SCOTUS justices being confirmed, and then stood by and allowed abortion rights to die on their watch. They're standing by right now, watching a judicial coup happening, and Biden just today came out to say "I'm not doing a damn thing about it, you'll have to vote me in for a second term in which I will continue to not do anything about it."

This "At least with the Democrats there's hope..." shtick is sounding pretty thin when they are telling us they have no plan to give us any hope that they'll actually do anything

@hacks4pancakes I feel like the mythology of the revolutionary war has infected far too many people (on all points of the political spectrum) with the idea that "no democracy" is the preferred choice, because then they can have a good ol' revolution and end up with the political system *they'd* prefer.
@womble @hacks4pancakes Bored suburban revolutionaries have no idea how bad living under a dictatorship, especially one with the most advanced military in the world, really would be. This ain't Les Mis, folks.
@textualdeviance @womble wait for lack of control on nuclear infrastructure and weapons
@textualdeviance @hacks4pancakes oh, I dunno... Les Mis ended with a bunch of dead people and no meaningful change.
@womble @hacks4pancakes Ah, but it was so ~romantic and exciting.~
@hacks4pancakes that presumes we actual had a democracy, we didn't. it was an ideal we never lived up to. We got a messy imitation
@TAI it’s better than Russia’s totally not a dictatorship
@hacks4pancakes you need to do your homework, it is also an imitation with elections that predetermine the choice
@TAI we can end up in a place where there’s never a choice or an ability to make change in the next year, or not.
@hacks4pancakes you need to get up to speed, we're already there. Biden is just keeping the throne warm
@hacks4pancakes Fun Fact: Democracy is Messy, because People are Messy As Fuck.
@hacks4pancakes I'd argue if the president is above the constitution and the law, we no longer have democracy anyways. It's over.
@samofhearts I’m not sure you are really considering what societal collapse is going to look like. It’s worth trying.
@hacks4pancakes I wasn't trying to imply that it isn't worth trying to fix things or make things better. Just that how things stand right now are very dire.
@samofhearts good. We have to do everything in our power.
