Watching “The Hunt for Red October” (1990) with a first-timer.
Here’s the fun thing about watching this movie with a first-timer who knows nothing about Sean Connery’s film career — for the first half of the movie Ramius seems like a Soviet madman who might be going rogue.
FUCK this movie is good
“The Hunt for Red October” has a lot of examples of lines of dialogue that were most likely added in post production, spoken by offscreen characters, to help the audience understand the basics of the plot.
@tvaziri I miss James Earl Jones. I should go through more of his catalog.

@tvaziri There are a few of those instances I find annoying because they really don’t trust the audience.

The worst is when Dallas first hears the Red October, and Jones says “We could have caught a boomer coming out of the barn”, and then obviously looped in is “May be a missile boat coming out of Polyarny”, which is saying the same damned thing! Just use one or the other. If you want to use military lingo, don’t then immediately repeat its meaning.

@tvaziri Agreed. Hadn’t seen it in a while. Still stands up.
@tvaziri I love THRO. Watched it again recently.

@tvaziri When I watch it it *seems* like they’re trying to float that possibility in the beginning, but it’s never clear to me that the suggestion is actually made plausible.

Then again, I’ve seen the film *so* many times that it’s hard to see it with naive eyes.

@tvaziri

And the sound design is impeccable.

@tvaziri Yeah That! 👍 Watching with people who don’t know it (as opposed to those who do who love it) showcases how well they managed that uncertainty while letting you fully accept the ultimate outcome. Underrated (despite being widely liked) film indeed.
@tvaziri I approve! I'd chosen it myself for rewatch tomorrow when I read your post. 😺
@tvaziri “This business will get out of control. It will get out of control and we'll be lucky to live through it.”

@tvaziri I wish I could see it for the first time again.

“Hey, I think someone just shot a torpedo at us.”

@tvaziri I wish I could erase my memory and watch it again for the first time

@tvaziri McTiernan has such an incredible start(* to his Hollywood directing career: Die Hard, Predator and Hunt for Red October. Three perfect movies back to back.

* yeah there was Nomads right at the start. But we’ll count that as a practice run.

@tvaziri I got the privilege of sharing this with my son a few months ago. He got really into it and, and it inspired him to make a summer movie watch list
