"YouTube confirms crackdown on VPN users accessing cheaper Premium plans"

No, listen, you just don't understand.

If Google pays taxes in a random country to cheat the system and save money, that's because "Globalism".

If you do it, you get banned though.

@fribbledom some are more equal than others....
@fribbledom Depends on who's doing it: it's either tax optimization or breach of terms or services
@fribbledom premium? lol wat - ppl pay for yt? snortlaugh
@nf3xn @fribbledom with Spotify upping prices, yes.
@knigge @fribbledom you use Spotify? eeew 😀
@nf3xn @knigge @fribbledom streaming music is a very popular way of consumption these days. i'm glad you're making your own informed decisions about this but please don't belittle others for their choices.
@dxciBel @nf3xn
Shame happens to be a very effective tool to modify corrupt social behaviour. Spotify has demonstrated time and again that it is a bad-actor. If people are still choosing such platforms, the least we must do is shame them (just like we must shame the artists who choose to play within the discriminatory boundaries set by these platforms).
@prasoon @nf3xn yeah pal you try to be an artist these days without having your music up on spotify see how that works out for ya
@dxciBel I'm not at artist so, I'm afraid, I only know second hand that to make a living on spotify one needs to have a few million plays. I don't think small artists thrive there anyway. But, if you say that spotify is the only possible way for an artist to make money, I'll take your word for it.
I'll still retain my right to shame someone prioritising a living over ethical social behaviour, however. If we are really in a hopeless situation, as you point out, all I can do is protest anyway.

@prasoon i never said you'd make money on spotify; you don't. however it has such a huge market share that not making your music available on the service massively hinders your ability to grow as an artist because it's the only way a lot of people consume music these days.

i will also maintain my right to shame people back for being unnecessarily rude under other people's posts.

@dxciBel Alright. You'd know best.
@dxciBel
Having your music on spotify is fine, using it hurts artists as well as spreds and funds medical misinformation and fasvism (their pivot to podcasts)

@MxSpoon i fail to see the part in my post where i asked for software recommendations.
@dxciBel
You can stream music without throwing money at few share holders
@MxSpoon okay, cool. i'm not gonna do that tho
@MxSpoon @dxciBel
Where do you get the music from? Does that take any extra time from you compared to paying for a streaming service? How do you host your jellyfin server? Does that cost any money or time?

@pethil
From your CDs or few thousand / million of your closest friends (redacted.ch orpheus.network)

compared to what you pay? Unless you make something like 30e/hour it is going to be cheaper.

how do you host? On your home PC for the cost of electricity. IP can be bit of a pain depending on your provider. Alternatively you rent a (virtual) server and pay less than two subscriptions per month.

also, you aren't fueling money to the pockets of few shareholders who are actively destroying the industry and, hopefully, archieving the medium
@dxciBel

@MxSpoon @pethil @dxciBel lmfao

> dont pay spotify

instead:

> pirate music instead
> spend time trying to get on redacted & setting up and managing a Jellyfin server
> spend money renting a VPS
> spend money renting a seedbox

@nf3xn @fribbledom I’m too poor to pay for Netflix, let alone YouTube; but even if I could, why should I?
@enoch_exe_inc
At least youtube premium throws a noticeable slice towards the peopleaking the content. Still better to just not use youtube and throw a few bucks every now and then at them *and* it costs less
@nf3xn @fribbledom
@enoch_exe_inc @[email protected] @fribbledom if you use YouTube often on mobile and aren't tech savvy enough to go through the revanced process or find a trustable youtube alternative interface app, the endless advertisements can become worth the money. Also, if you choose to use youtube music rather than Spotify you can get that plus removing the ads.
@fribbledom information superhighway (applies to US only)

@fribbledom now, now, just remember, when corporations or billionaires utilize methods to save on taxes they are called Tax Instruments, which is perfectly OK.

But for anyone else, it is tax fraud. 🤣

@chrislw That's because you actually need to set up a legal entity in the other country for it to not be fraud, that's how it works, that's how they make sure that only rich people get access to these mechanisms after all.

@fribbledom

One of the laws of life. Big fish eat little fish.

@dustyworm @fribbledom True. But wolves work together to kill and eat moose.

@fribbledom

The solution is to not pay any #youtube premium plan at all.

@fribbledom Google is just one of the worst companies ever... sometimes i dunno which is worse Google or Adobe
@Natsura @fribbledom easily google just based on the volume of money
@fribbledom huh, never thought about it this way
@fribbledom YouTube can miss me with that bullshit. All they're doing is making me want to go even more out of my way to not pay them, and not see ads.
@fribbledom Invidious, Newpipe and Freetube are your responses for this. Just hoping that these services keep working even after Google attempts to inutilize them.

@fribbledom

Corporations are smart.
Customers are thieves.

@fribbledom

Piketty's "it's not 'left' or 'right', it's two axes, egalitarian (or not) and nativist (or not), and globalists are just inegalitarian non-nativists"

@fribbledom I'm starting to sound like a broken LP, but:
I say this with all sincerity: FUCK GOOGLE.

@fribbledom

Of course. Only companies and rich people are allowed to benefit from the capitalistic system. Not the average and definitely not the poor. It's shitty by design.

@fribbledom
Look, it's all about legal framework.
You need to send them a notarized certificate that your official chosen place of residence is in Mumbai or so, and that's it.

@fribbledom EU law states that you should have access to digital services you're paying for within the entire EU, regardless of the country you are in.

It's literally illegal for Google to geoblock content you've bought in, say, Poland (where YT Premium is $6.50) while you're in, for example, Germany (where YT Premium is $14).

@fribbledom
Google would have a better argument if they paid taxes based upon the country their viewers were in.
@fribbledom just don't watch YouTube, problem solved
@lightninhopkins @fribbledom

No, keep watching Youtube but use Invidious & Co. Giving up is not a solution.
@fribbledom

That'd be like Pfizer (et al) sending you a letter saying "you can't buy
any of our drugs, any more, because we found out you went to Canada for a better deal".
@fribbledom All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.
@fribbledom

If I lift too much content from a reference and put it into my term paper, it's plagiariasm. If a multinational tech company wholesale ingests data to feed their AI offerings, it's just good business sense.

@fribbledom not evil. there is no point.
@fribbledom The alternative to this policy isn't what you think it is, the alternative is a single price for everybody and massive discrimination against third-world countries. That's what any company would be forced to do if this was illegal.
