Today I saw someone refer to the X logo as a "sans-serif swastika", and now this is going to live in my head forever.
@esm between that and the cybertruck getting tagged the "incel camino" the internet is really coming through...
@cda
Well, both are associated with Space Karen...
@esm
@cda
Aka wankpanzer

@PatrickOBeirne @cda see, I have a problem with it being called a wankpanzer.

It really should be Panzerwankwagen.

Incel camino is much better, though. I'd pay that

@sortius @PatrickOBeirne @cda
Panzerwankwagen is outstanding ๐Ÿ˜

LET ME WELL, ACTUALLY Y'ALL on the incel camino vs. wankpanzer. had a poll that became a thread because the answers were all amazing.

enjoy!

@ToniScott @sortius @PatrickOBeirne @cda

@blogdiva
Great thread! .social wouldn't allow me to like the scholarly ones ๐Ÿ™‚ , it asked me to login first.
It looks like wankpanzer is of UK origin and Camino, I assume, is a truck in the US. Camino to me is a Spanish pilgrim trail.

@blogdiva @ToniScott @PatrickOBeirne @cda my point was "wankpanzer" is grammatically incorrect, and just means "armour(ed) wank", as it comes from "Panzerkampfwagen" (armour fighting vehicle)

So, Panzerwankwagen, or even Panzerwankerwagen, would be much more appropriate

@sortius @blogdiva @ToniScott @cda
There's grammar, and there's the demotic appeal of the staccato dactyl, to quote from the thread ๐Ÿ˜‰

@PatrickOBeirne @blogdiva yeh, I'm not much for reading threads posted to me (I'm 100% against quote tweeting). The reality is, for many of us, "wankpanzer" lands bad.

There's no rhythmic advantage to "wankpanzer", IMO, its appeal is purely through ignorance of the root word.

The root word, when "kampf" is replaced with "wank" or "wanker" is much more amusing to me, especially when said with Germanic phonetics: Pan-zer-Vank-Vag-en, or Pan-zer-Vank-er-Vag-en. The latter being much more rhythmic

LOL @sortius @PatrickOBeirne "many". dude, tis the innanets. you're being a wank about panzers ๐Ÿค“

@blogdiva @PatrickOBeirne you're the one who messaged me with your quote tweeted poll, "well actuallying me".

Maybe take your idiotsplaining elsewhere

@cda I cannot unsee either of these  but that's a good thing @esm
@esm Yeah, visual comparisons were doing the rounds at the time.

@esm

That's so good that I want it to have its own Wikipedia entry. Can we credit the person who created it originally?

An X is kind of a sans serif German swastika - Lemmy.World

so it seems fitting.

@ulfhenrich @jgamble @esm

From the comments you can definitely see they didn't get it lol

@esm I thought this, but not in the same words. It's brilliant.
@esm Golden. I got as far as 'swastika without the hooks at the ends', but this is a winner.

@martinvermeer @esm

I've always seen it a s a compensatory gesture in response to that chromosome configuration vacating the platform... a reconfig of the same crossed lines and chromosomes of the 4 and the 8 of the "chan" type.

Fake it 'till you make it?

@wltzw @esm this sadly requires people to paint accurate swastikas on walls. the ones we get around here are all r/hailhortler material.

@wltzw @naura @esm Reminds me of when I was growing up in North London and supporters of the local Arsenal Football Club (AFC) would doctor the NF ligature graffiti done by the racist National Front.

It took just two lines, as shown here in red.

@esm wait until someone tells you that the Slack logo is a swastika made of dicks
@ricci @esm I might suffer from "swastikas everywhere" syndrome, but I vividly remember the ascii version of the Sun Microsystems logo they used in their email footers
@ricci @esm Every time I see it, I think to myself, if the Slack logo were all one color, the fact that it's a swastika would be obvious.
As an artist, I'd be shocked if the person who designed it didn't see it.

@samhainnight @ricci @esm We need to avoid feeding the argument of right-wingers that we're making something of nothing. Yes, it's there, and it's 'turning' the Nazi direction. I really don't think, though, the designer had any intention of raising that image (it used to be a hashtag symbol). I'm also convinced there are people with focused intent to platform supremacy and/or raise ire on which we should focus.

Squares are just a PITA. They are.

@janisf @ricci @esm In my head, I imagine there was probably a high level exec who wanted a design, but didn't see the connotations, a designer who got the job but did, then tried to talk the dumb exec out of it, but they wouldn't budge, so the designer did the best they could to make it as unbad as they could.

I say this as an artist who has tried to talk people out of bad design decisions.

@samhainnight @ricci @esm IMO, squares are bad design decisions. :P
@samhainnight @ricci @esm What's more converning to me is the monopolistic trajectory of Microsoft. I literally cried when they bought Slack.

@ricci @esm Oh I know, itโ€™s the first thing I thought when I saw it.

Related: the logo of the Swedish Liberal party caused some amusement when they changed it.

@esm someone mentioned that the KICK logo looks like three Ks and I also have had trouble unseeing that.
@esm That was my first reaction and the final drop that made me leave

@esm if you reshuffle it a bit, you also get a swastika.. not that I think it's intentional, but I do find the logo has clear fascist aesthetics.

Not least, considering how it replaced a cute blue bird.

@esm @mmu_man please let's not ruin the letter X just because of this idiot.

@esm

I've never really liked harsh, angular symbols, flags, etc.

@esm I think you have hit on why Musk loves the letter so muchโ€ฆ
@esm I'm not an expert on the topic but the symbol which you are referring to is "nazi Hakenkreuz".
@esm I was close last year! (I like yours better.)
@esm @me_ I cannot unsee the (negative) swastika in the slack logo either
@esm SANS SERIF SWASTIKA ๐Ÿคฃ ๐Ÿคฃ ๐Ÿคฃ as opposed to a slab serif of the OG. this is perfection. this is art.
@esm It's sad, that X was completely reasonable mathematical notation (even to the point its built in to many common fonts!) for decades before Musk appropriated it.
