And so #ArtemisII delivers ... the dark side of the Earth last night, illuminated by the full Moon, with a bright atmospheric arc indicating where the Sun is hiding and aurora in several places. While beyond Earth at 5 o'clock you see the zodiacal light and Venus and many stars. A bit noisy but something never imaged before AFAIK - the Apollo era photographic film wasn't up to this. From https://x.com/NASA/status/2040059770237849635 while https://x.com/NASA/status/2040059740848283920 shows a fraction of the Earth's dayside.

Even before beginning formal science operations, the remarkable Rubin Observatory has already discovered 12,700 new asteroids.

It found 11,000 asteroids in just 6 weeks during an "optimization" shakedown.

I need some help from the #Astronomy and #Cosmology folks.

I found this redshift calculator at https://spacetimemesh.com/redshift-calculator/, and either I’m confused (very possible), or they have one of the labels wrong.

It seems to me that “light travel distance/how far light actually travelled” suggests how much space the light from the distant object travelled through to get to us. But shouldn’t that also be the lookback time?

I suspect that what they’re labelling as “light travel distance” is the distance of the object at the time the light left it, 5.55 Gly. Then “lookback time,” 7.95 Gly, is how long the light has travelled to us as the universe expanded. Finally “comoving distance,” 11.09 Gly, is the current distance (assuming god-vision 😉) of the object.

Without getting too picky with my terminology, is my interpretation right? ELI5 explanations are welcome 😊

I know these numbers depend on the model and parameters used, I'm not interested in getting into that particular aspect.

The best view from the #ArtemisII mission so far came at noon UTC today when a solar-wing-mounted camera broastcast this view of Earth some 70,000 km away next to the ESM engines for a while. The Orion and the ESM are on their way back to perigee now - and around 23:45 UTC the trans-lunar injection burn is expected.

Sneak preview 👀

Some of our #JWST data will become publicly available in the archives tomorrow, for the galactic star-forming region, Sharpless 305, & the nearby massive protostar, RAFGL5232.

The data are tricky & need more work on saturation, noise, & banding problems, plus colour compositing 😬

But as others will be quick to publish images as usual, I thought I'd share our snapshot with you first 😉

More to come as we continue pixel-bashing 👾🔨👍

Comet MAPS faces a make-or-break moment as it dives toward the sun on April 4 — could it shine in the daytime sky?

Comet MAPS is about to face its ultimate test as it sweeps just 101,000 miles above the sun's surface.
