Sounds like a privacy nightmare. You should consider #Linux 👍

One day this will type of stuff will end up mandatory, and even if it’s local it’s being fed into an AI. This stuff will get abused.

Anyone for this stuff just isn't thinking:

- It's another target for malicious use
- Most users don't go and tweak and change all their settings
- You really think Microsoft won't use your data somewhere? lololol

There's so so many problems with this kind of thing.

And in their FAQ: https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/copilot-plus-pcs#shop

Yeah that's gonna go so well.

@gamingonlinux only the best security from microsoft!!!
@gamingonlinux I feel like we're going to have a lot more new friends
@gamingonlinux who tf would use this, hell who thought of this
@gamingonlinux "we are going to take pictures of your screen as you type in your passwords but it's the fault of the websites actually not us"

@gamingonlinux it's gonna be fun to see how Microsoft world will be different to Microsoft Europe ( privacy and optout law here)

Still sad that a lot of game doesn't work on Linux because of anti cheat

@kazord @gamingonlinux most do, but yeah there are some
@gamingonlinux It's a nice way for MS to use your data "without using your data". They will train the AI model on your computer and import the model regularly. Having data about you without having it! Brilliant, isn't it?
@gamingonlinux Makes me wary of the new Arm SoCs coming in laptops too. Would prefer it was trivial to switch out to Linux.
@sokz tbh if it were trivial to move to linux, would anyone even use windows?
@trecccst In my case, for a long time, it was inertia and Excel. I believe a person who has a bit of experience installing Windows won't face much difficulty installing Linux on their system.
@gamingonlinux luckily it's limited to Snapdragon CPUs (for now)
edit: Like, if it were some, say, chinese shady software we would call it spying right away, when MS does it it's suddendly a feature?

@davidrevoy @gamingonlinux AI as your creepy stalker "friend"....
@davidrevoy @gamingonlinux
When you think about it, it took all of us quite some time to realise that this song ain´t what we thought...
And indeed a perfect song about any ¨A.I¨ assistant.
@saberwarthog @davidrevoy @gamingonlinux The song sounds innocuous, but it really isn't.

@HollieK72 @davidrevoy @gamingonlinux
Yep, as someone that doesn´t have English as a first language, I call that the ¨Franky Goes to Hollywood Effect¨ :
- Step 1 : you vibe
- Step 2 : you listen to the lyrics correctly
- Step 3 : ¨Oh f*ck, really ?¨

(but with ¨Relax¨ by Franky Goes to Hollywood there is a step 4 : you get back to vibing because it´s damn good XD)

@gamingonlinux dear god. MS is really doing everything they can to make this the year of the linux desktop.

@nozze @gamingonlinux

I have been confused at trying to understand their tactics. IMHO it feels like they are doing everything they can to push people away from Windows with their user-hostile behaviors and they are getting bolder each passing day it seems.

Changing familiar context menus, forced updates, forced telemetry/settings reset. They might as well stop beating around the bush and just tell people straight out when you install Windows we own your PC.

@gamingonlinux
Every time I read something about MAGA (Microsoft, Apple, Google, Amazon) I give thanks to Linux, Firefox, DDG, Nextcloud.

@gamingonlinux Does this ship bundled with Rachel Ticotin and Sharon Stone?

Total Recall (1990 film) - Wikipedia

@gamingonlinux it's a nightmare for privacy, global system performance and disk space, for something nobody asked for...

@gamingonlinux Imagine if you'd designed a system with such limited ways of collecting data about the running state that the only way to do it was to take screenshots and run them through a computer vision system.

Imagine then having the hubris to call that a feature.

If I wanted something similar on macOS, it's trivial to have a periodic AppleScript that queries the running apps for the windows and documents that they have open. It can even get the text of current documents (including the bits not on the screen) for indexing. And it would require about 1% of the compute of this feature.

@gamingonlinux
Similar surveillance technologies may already soon become mandatory actually, if the #ChatControl legislation is passed in the EU.
#StopScanningMe

There is also an official question by member of the European Parliament @echo_pbreyer about how game developers would be affected by ChatControl (answer still pending): https://www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document/E-9-2024-001337_EN.html

I fully share your recommendation to use Linux instead of Windows. But ChatControl and #ClientSideScanning are a danger for all software users.

@gamingonlinux
The main concern that will impact directly many user is related to privacy in our workplace.
So, no choice here.

@gamingonlinux

What is their justification for this ugliness?

@gamingonlinux Agreed that it's creepy and evil, and a good reason to consider Linux as an alternative.

That said, it may only be deployed to machines with certain hardware. I have no doubt people more clever than I will figure out how to neuter it.

As best as I can understand it, it's also somehow tied to Copilot. I have Copilot (and the horrid Cortana) disabled on my one Windows PC using ShutUp10.

@gamingonlinux There is an "i" missing in the article: [...] that ruins in the background [...].

#crapitalism

@gamingonlinux Despite the privacy concerns of Windows, most people aren't ready to switch to Linux because they still need some important programs for their daily work. I know there are work-arounds to make some Windows apps/games work on Linux, but not all of them can work properly in Linux...

@gamingonlinux At least it's exclusive to the new Snapdragon ARM processors, since apparently modern Intel and AMD chips can't handle that kind of AI.

Nevertheless, it's still a hell of a dick move by Microsoft, but what were we expecting, considering both Copilot and ads on the Start menu (maybe eventually even in, I don't know, the settings app? Who knows) shoved in Win11 for no reason at all?

I really don't get why companies keep on shoving these glorified tech demos everywhere.

@gamingonlinux What, exactly, is the AI part of screenshotting everything?
@Corb_The_Lesser @gamingonlinux image recognition so you can search it
@Corb_The_Lesser @gamingonlinux (I don't think it's a good idea but it's AI)
@gamingonlinux The more MS teases Win 11's new features, the more I feel like replacing my Win10 install with Linux.
@gamingonlinux ...what could possibly go wrong...
@gamingonlinux I'd be very interested to see if malware can somehow retrieve that data and push it elsewhere. Which sounds like a nightmare waiting to happen; suddenly you don't even have to worry about capturing the screen yourself.
Or perhaps this is all just counterproductive fear mongering.
@gamingonlinux Nice feature for all abusive managers wanting full control of their employees! They will be very disappointed that it's limited to a specific processor now 😂
@gamingonlinux Great news to hurry us to finally switch to Linux. We've been wanting to do it for a long time, although for a completely different reason - the comfort of Linux programming.
@gamingonlinux If this is active at any point without the users full knowledge and understanding and without them manually and intentionally starting it up themselves its just straight up malware at a level that should be illegal.

@gamingonlinux I was waiting for the Nvidia wayland fix to release, but now I don't think I can delay this for much longer.

I am most likely going to switch over to @pop_os_official. They currently use x11, have a rolling-release Nvidia driver, and are working on one of the most promising Wayland DEs - perfect for my needs right now.

@gamingonlinux oh god im aint ever going to windows 11 then
im stuck at windows 10 forever LMAO

After our wild success with Torment Nexus, we are unveiling our latest service, based on the utopian movie "Total Recall".

@gamingonlinux Microsoft doesn't seem to have the best track record in privacy or ethics or playing well with others or coding or software releases or updates, unless you're speaking to bloatware malware viruses and forcing hardware obsolescence artificially to drive a market for profits sake at the expense of the end user.
