Linux people, *please* understand this. Sometimes people need to run Windows.

Theyโ€™re allowed to complain about Windows ads, or tracking, or any other enshittification problems, without you saying โ€œuse Linuxโ€ every time.

Update: I regret posting this.

Update 2: I've addressed the most common comments below. I'm muting this thread now. Lesson learned!

Rubenerd

By Ruben Schade in s/Singapore/Sydney/. ๐ŸŒป

@rubenerd why?

No, I mean, really. Why does someone "have" to use it.

@mirabilos @rubenerd Are you serious? Because of proprietary software that only runs under Windows (not WINE) that I have to use to get a paycheque.

MS Teams (the native client) comes to mind. Not running it could get me fired. MS Outlook (again, the native client with native COM plug-ins) comes a very close second. Web versions are not an option for either product, here, for sound technical/functional reasons.

I greatly enjoy what I do, so I choose to run UNIX on the servers and Windows on my laptop in order to continue getting paid to enjoy doing what I do.

@athompso @mirabilos @rubenerd I mean you *could* run it in a VM under Linux

*ducks and runs away  *

(to clarify I too run Windows as a dual boot for some occasions, so I totally get the point)

@MagicLike @mirabilos @rubenerd I can't, even - Teams' "presence" features don't work well, if it all, that way.
@MagicLike but that still leaves you with having to run windows. In an even less supported / well tested setup nonetheless...
@athompso @mirabilos @rubenerd
@mirabilos @athompso @rubenerd Optical transport networks exist and somebody needs to run them. ( Thankfully not me. But my work friends certainly do need to. )
@rubenerd @mirabilos @athompso Also too. Nobody likes evangelical anythings. Ever. Yโ€™all are just annoying AF. If I didnโ€™t already not use Linux Iโ€™d rage quit it again just to not be associated with your toxic fandom.
@athompso @mirabilos @rubenerd A big problem that my attention has been drawn to is that Linux accessibility tools are severely lacking. So for some people, it is literally not possible to use Linux. That's a problem that could be solved, but telling people who cannot use Linux that they must use Linux isn't helping at all.
@foolishowl @mirabilos @rubenerd it's not just Linux - even Windows 11 itself has become significantly harder to use without a mouse, for example, and someone at MS continues to have a raging hate on for contrast in UI elements.

@athompso @mirabilos @rubenerd There are a lot of times I complain about people not using open source software, and I often feel it's a bit annoying that people complain about all the open source advocacy on a federated network built by open source advocates using open source tools in order to escape proprietary networks.

But I have to remind myself we can't just ignore real problems with open source and that people are compelled to make compromises. We have to actively make things better.

@foolishowl @athompso @rubenerd yes, of course. Iโ€™m doing what I can to make OSS better.
@foolishowl @athompso @mirabilos @rubenerd yeah I was looking into Linux screen reader tools at one point and god it's a nightmare

@athompso @mirabilos @rubenerd
There probably is still a lot of proprietary software which is really not running on Linux, but MS Teams (at least for chat and video conference) is running quite OK in a web browser or as (unofficial) electron app: https://teamsforlinux.de

I use web outlook for mail and calendar, so I don't know if I miss any functionality in comparison to the official app ๐Ÿคท

(I'm in the fortunate position that I haven't had to use Windows on my work computer for decades)

Teams for Linux

@athompso @mirabilos @rubenerd I remember seeing rms once, totally seriously and with a straight face, tell someone who said something like this that they were "still making a choice" and they could "choose to have a lower standard of living" and "remain true to their values".

Personally, I've only used Windows like 10 times ever. But I'm not going to tell someone else what to do.

@stevendbrewer @athompso @rubenerd I want people to be more aware of the choices they are making regarding giving up personal freedom, so they can then make informed decisions.

Most of the people replying are prime examples of species that really needs this food-for-thought and start thinking, stop whining.

@mirabilos @athompso @rubenerd Regardless of whether I live in a glass house or not, I just try not to throw stones. It doesn't add to any decor, honestly.
@stevendbrewer @athompso @rubenerd point (though xkcd#386 applies), but the RMS comparison was a bit below the beltline as well.
Microsoft Teams progressive web app now available on Linux

Weโ€™re excited to announce the general availability of support for the Microsoft Teams progressive web app (PWA) as a feature of our current web client for..

TECHCOMMUNITY.MICROSOFT.COM

@athompso
Okay, now I am really curious... Both softwares you mentioned have alternatives that run in a browser ... What are the technical/functional reasons you mentioned?

I'm genuinely curious! ๐Ÿค”
@mirabilos @rubenerd

@musicmatze @[email protected] @rubenerd Teams web can't do presence detection reliably (more like "at all" IMHO), and screen sharing is marginal at best. Audio latency is often unacceptable.

Outlook for web shares a name and a back-end with the desktop client but not much else - completely different UI, no integration into other apps, different functionality compared to desktop, and no plugin architecture. Yes it sends and receives email, but there's so much more to Outlook than that!
@mirabilos @rubenerd Go work on optical transport networks with Linux.
@sng @mirabilos @rubenerd One would think that networks of pretty much any obscure flavour were The Thing that Linux does well :D How come Windows got to this one first?

Awesome linked response

@mirabilos @mwl @rubenerd

heh

โ€œDo you think I like being stuck in Microsoft-Adobe Hell?โ€

I feel this.

@dgar @mwl @rubenerd apparently you like it enough to continue being stuck thereโ€ฆ

@rubenerd @mwl
Oh no, Iโ€™m on Mac. But if you work in particular industries, Microsoft/Adobe hell will follow you anywhere.

@mirabilos You probably donโ€™t work in publishing. ๐Ÿ˜

@dgar @mwl @rubenerd @mirabilos
And even when the things you use have perfect alternatives in Linux, your workplace is likely to require you to use a Windows computer anyway

@mirabilos @dgar @rubenerd

I want to write books and get them in people's hands.

That labor has a price.

@mirabilos @rubenerd why can't you trust people to know their own needs?

@mirabilos @rubenerd I mean,I have to for work. Not only to do my work, but a large portion of our servers are Windows servers. We use MS SQL server.

Also, personally I've used Windows for three decades. I'm comfortable with Windows. I know it inside and out. I have never had the issues other people do with Windows. It works for me, it works well. There is no reason for me to change OS

This isn't rocket science.

@mirabilos @rubenerd I want to use VMware Workstation and it completely freezes my machine on Linux.
@juni @rubenerd DDTT, itโ€™s just another crappy proprietary product.
@mirabilos If the product runs well on 2 out of 3 platforms, I'd rather blame the third platform than the product.
@juni shows how short-sighted you are

@mirabilos ok, but do you have anything substantial to say instead of personal remarks?

Edit: got blocked. Fediverse, never change.

@mirabilos @rubenerd Try running VST instruments together with a decent DAW on Linux.

let me know how you got it working.

(yes I know I can use OSX buy that costs a fortune...)

@mirabilos @rubenerd I have a work PC I have to use to connect to devices through my work VPN to do my job and can do nothing about that. And a lot of the devices I fix at work are Windows devices. I have zero choice over how much Windows I touch at work or how much it annoys me.
@rubenerd the people responding here all are so utterly clueless or donโ€™t recognise the choice in front of them. I wonโ€™t bother responding to them allโ€ฆ
@mirabilos @rubenerd well for one I need to use someone's windows laptop once in a while to sign pdf using my DSC key which is not supported by any other OS not even MacOS
@jaypatelani @rubenerd no, you want to sign the PDF that way, you donโ€™t have to
@mirabilos @rubenerd then how can I sign another way please show me ? This is requirement for MCA Indian government website software for the same is available only for Windows ๐Ÿ˜…
@jaypatelani @rubenerd can you just print it out and sign it by hand? (This is why I am strongly in favour of a right to analogue life.)
@mirabilos @rubenerd I wish but they don't accept it :( there's no other way the Indian government has made this mandatory for many of Company ROC process which must be done via signed PDF. Sad part is signing hardware key manufacturers is Chinese company ๐Ÿคฃ
@mirabilos @rubenerd i agree with you I want analogue paper process but Govt. Pushing this on all of MCA portal users no other options. But even though I don't have windows installed on my laptop. I use someone else's whenever I need to do this process
@mirabilos @rubenerd work gets super upset if you reinstall their machines...

@mirabilos @rubenerd Windows might suit someone's usecase better. You wouldn't tell someone to use a tractor when they need a station wagon, right? Even if you knew of a several seater large trunkspace tractor. If Linux suits your usecase better, excellent. Not true for everyone.

Also remember sometimes people aren't looking for solutions, they're just looking to vent.

@mirabilos @[email protected] here's my case:

if i work on music production/audio work, i use windows so i have access to fl studio and all my plugins.

fl studio does work in wine. but this does not mean the plugins i use work in wine. i have a workflow ive developed over years and the amount of effort to swap to linux compatible alternatives would kill my will to continue with doing audio work.

i categorically refuse to use anything but windows for audio
@gamer @[email protected] @[email protected] not to mention work. you can be forced to use windows since its the business standard and you can't just "not use it" or else you risk losing your job just for refusing to use something
@sneexy @mirabilos @rubenerd the reasons for using windows go beyond technical: there are social, economic, psychological, human reasons to use windows. to ignore that and say "linux is the only way" is to live in a fantasy world

computers are used by people, and thus need to be made for people

@sneexy @gamer

The global conglomerate I work for has ~30,000 Windows installs with Office. That's the standard. Employees don't have a say in the matter.

Most of those will have AutoDesk products installed. Some also have Bentley products and fewer still Dassault. Because those are the ones the clients expect us to use.

IT folks are already run off their feet doing support. The absolute last thing they need is to do it on multiple platforms, especially with the wide variety of hardware the company uses.

At home I have an old laptop running Mint, which works fine.

But my gaming rig is Win11. I had to shut off or remove a lot of bloat, but it is what it is. It works fine for my purposes. I don't want a project, I just want to play a few games.

@mirabilos @rubenerd gaming is still a big reason
@lexd0g @mirabilos @rubenerd so true
gaming on linux is more viable than ever nowadays, but that doesn't change the fact that many anti-cheats
have to specifically exclude linux because it'd just be impossible to actually secure the environment when the environment could be as simple as vanilla ubuntu and as complex and different as some person's hyper-customized NixOS install that they've been tweaking for 14 years
Roblox, Fortnite, Valorant and soon League of Legends, there's like a bunch of super popular games out there that straight up refuse to run on Linux because of that.
it's sucky but that's just how it ends up being sometimes, and apart from convincing the devs
(which, unfortunately, usually can't happen) the only solution for someone who wants to play is either buy a Mac for like $1,200, or just dual-boot Windows for free...
@frost @mirabilos @rubenerd vr is also for the most part Windows only, unless you deal with very unstable software (monado) or you get an overpriced outdated vr headset (valve index) and deal with only slightly unstable software (steamvr)
@lexd0g @frost Thanks for those replies, thatโ€™s more context I wasnโ€™t aware of. โ™ก
