Linux people, *please* understand this. Sometimes people need to run Windows.

They’re allowed to complain about Windows ads, or tracking, or any other enshittification problems, without you saying “use Linux” every time.

Update: I regret posting this.

Update 2: I've addressed the most common comments below. I'm muting this thread now. Lesson learned!

@rubenerd why?

No, I mean, really. Why does someone "have" to use it.

@mirabilos @[email protected] here's my case:

if i work on music production/audio work, i use windows so i have access to fl studio and all my plugins.

fl studio does work in wine. but this does not mean the plugins i use work in wine. i have a workflow ive developed over years and the amount of effort to swap to linux compatible alternatives would kill my will to continue with doing audio work.

i categorically refuse to use anything but windows for audio
@gamer @[email protected] @[email protected] not to mention work. you can be forced to use windows since its the business standard and you can't just "not use it" or else you risk losing your job just for refusing to use something
@sneexy @mirabilos @rubenerd the reasons for using windows go beyond technical: there are social, economic, psychological, human reasons to use windows. to ignore that and say "linux is the only way" is to live in a fantasy world

computers are used by people, and thus need to be made for people

@sneexy @gamer

The global conglomerate I work for has ~30,000 Windows installs with Office. That's the standard. Employees don't have a say in the matter.

Most of those will have AutoDesk products installed. Some also have Bentley products and fewer still Dassault. Because those are the ones the clients expect us to use.

IT folks are already run off their feet doing support. The absolute last thing they need is to do it on multiple platforms, especially with the wide variety of hardware the company uses.

At home I have an old laptop running Mint, which works fine.

But my gaming rig is Win11. I had to shut off or remove a lot of bloat, but it is what it is. It works fine for my purposes. I don't want a project, I just want to play a few games.
