Somebody compiled KDE version 1 on Debian #Linux 13. It is a miracle that you can even able to compile it. Source https://www.reddit.com/r/unixporn/comments/1buqeeo/kde_112_kde_1_compiled_on_debian_13_trixie/ #opensource
@nixCraft Would be interested in seeing the patches they made both to Qt, and KDE itself. Its likely that the patches and compiler flags they used were very verg hacky. :P

@nixCraft That was my favourite version of KDE!

After that, I moved to Xfce and more or less stayed with it.

I only use applications in full screen mode anyhow, and I use xfce4-terminal --drop-down bound to Ctrl-` so I always have the terminal close to hand.

Good enough for me! :)

@nixCraft you can use Trinity DE with that appearance though x3
@nixCraft It is beautiful. 😍
@nixCraft this long-term API stability in Unix is amazing. I know a vendor that is still selling X/Motif based apps that were started more than 35 years ago. Try this with a Windows apps
@nixCraft having compiled KDE 1 on my own distro for a friend back in the very early 2000s I can confirm it’s a wonder
@nixCraft really loved tinkering with it when it came out — so many memories. Also, KDevelop back then!
@nixCraft @stroughtonsmith This brings back a ton of memories from when I was first experimenting with Linux in high school.
@nixCraft
Power of commerical software, qt
@nixCraft It’s strange how my nostalgia for this era of the Linux desktop grows fonder. Running older #Linux distributions in a modern day VM is super difficult. Not to mention how difficult it was on hardware back in the 90s.
@adacosta @nixCraft I can get behind themeing somwthing like XFCE to look like windows XP. That's kinda fun. But for the love of God, don't actually run the old software!
@codemonkeymike @nixCraft I run vintage operating systems all the time, not for productive use, but just to look back at play with. I have an assortment vintage Macs and VirtualBox vms for Windows NT 3.1, 95, 2000. All in good fun.
@nixCraft A proper Desktop Environment for proper Users.
@nixCraft This is when linux UI design peaked. It's all downhill from here.

@nixCraft

C++ is not sufficiently broken and X11 still exists.

@nixCraft
Oh wow, so many memories!!
@nixCraft Damn, that brings back memories.

@nixCraft
Incredible it still compiles on a modern distro, trully timeless. 😊

Back when the light themes where nice 😎 and not as bright white to blind me 😜. And there's the really good look litle blue gradient on the top of the terminal window.

I like the good ol' retro look of it. 😍

@nixCraft Yes, I have done it before. I compiled X11 first, then Qt, then KDE 1.0. It took me a long time, a lot of time.
@nixCraft In a way it's shocking just how little it actually changed over the years. All this functionality that they already had back then..
@nixCraft Yet another reason why open source is amazing though right? Stuff *can* live forever
@nixCraft I remember it well. Buggy as hell, as I recall.
@nixCraft I remember KDE 1. That’s what got me hooked.
@nixCraft lol how cool is this!! :D
@nixCraft +1 for KDE 2 please!!!! :D
@nixCraft this desktop environment is pretty kool
@nixCraft Is it? - I mean, I have GTK version 1.2 on my debian sid desktop. Compiled it a year or so ago.
@nixCraft This is like running something like MyPal on Windows 2000. Is it necessary? Not really, but it sure is fun!
@nixCraft @syaochan
Wowser, for some reason a can't get BEOS or OS2 WARP out of my head ;)
