@dgar This meme has to go down in history for the most epic one frame horror movie ever made. Gives me the creeps every time.
@dgar
i would have added alphabet co somehow, alphabet co owns youtube and google.
@dgar He looks like a serial killer wearing a Mark Zuckerberg mask. 😱
@dgar “Only government-approved platforms may legally spy on you and track your every movement.”
@dgar By the way, this is how it (mostly) works in China. Nearly all foreign social media is banned primarily for tracking and censorship reasons…and secondarily to prevent its own people from being tracked (and censored) by the (increasingly) hostile foreign powers that own all the other social media platforms.
@dgar I don’t care what FB, MS or Google do with my data - actually, I even share data with these platforms to help improve them. But, we should all be worried about TikTok and what the CCP does with them.

@Daniel_Keppler @dgar Well I see you’re not a woman worried about having your data shared with cops in a red state who can bust you for having an abortion, mister. This is something you have to be concerned about with American social media platforms.

Do you have a security clearance? If not you probably don’t have to worry about the CCP whether you use TikTok or not, you’re not that important. I know that’s disappointing to you.

@MisuseCase @Daniel_Keppler @dgar
TikTok sent out a mayday to flood Congress with calls and millions of pre-teens responded. What if they do the same thing in support of China invading Taiwan? Or against sanctions in support of Uygurs or Tibet?
I'm not for Facebook sharing data with law enforcement, but I can keep two things true.
@Okanogen @Daniel_Keppler @dgar Do you think all the kids who are upset about Palestine are going to suddenly be gung-ho for oppressing Tibet or invading Taiwan if TikTok tells them to? I really doubt it
@MisuseCase @Daniel_Keppler @dgar
They weren't upset about Palestine, they were deluded into being upset Congress was going to "ban TikTok", which isn't even what the bill was doing.

@Okanogen @Daniel_Keppler @dgar Force a sale to Steve Mnuchin (this is not a joke, he’s been trying to wrangle investors) or, failing that, ban it.

Actually 90 days is too short to secure a deal, so yes, this bill would ban it.

You could explain it to the young folks who are upset and tell them they are being deluded and they’d say “that’s better *how*?” They’d be right.

@MisuseCase @Daniel_Keppler @dgar
Will no one think of the poor Chinese oligarchs?

@Okanogen @Daniel_Keppler @dgar Unlike the American ones they won’t sell their users’ data to data brokers who will then sell it to cops in red states who will use it to track down women visiting abortion clinics.

Which is why Steve Mnuchin wants to buy TikTok.

(That and/or to do what Elon Musk did to Twitter.)

@MisuseCase @Daniel_Keppler @dgar
Why do you believe that? Because they don't care about making money, too? Because of their ideology?

@Okanogen @Daniel_Keppler @dgar No, because that’s why American domestic intelligence agencies don’t like them in spite of the fact that (by their own admission) they have no evidence of TikTok actually being used to spy on Americans.

American intelligence and law enforcement agencies buy our data from data brokers to do surveillance on us without technically violating the 4th Amendment.

1/2

@Okanogen @Daniel_Keppler @dgar However, TikTok does not do business with these data brokers so DHS, the NSA, etc. don’t have access to that data. It’s a huge blind spot for them with a sensitive population (young people). So they really want TikTok to be either banned or sold to some American owner who will work with data brokers.

2/2

@MisuseCase @Daniel_Keppler @dgar
That's a bullshit conspiracy theory. You know why I can say that? Like fucking Republicans and Democrats will suddenly work together for some common conspiracy theory goal like this in 2024? How low do IQ points need to drop to believe that?
@Okanogen @Daniel_Keppler @dgar There are a lot of self-described liberals on here who want to ban TikTok and are suspicious of it and yet the idea that some Democrats in Congress support this bill seems shocking to you and makes you say bad words?
@MisuseCase @Daniel_Keppler @dgar
American Congress members have CLEAR evidence that TikTok will manipulate their users in furtherance of TikTok goals. That's why they voted overwhelming for this bill.
I am 100% uninterested in protecting Chinese oligarchs, and if this furthers the conversation of preventing the sharing of social media data with US law enforcement, I say it's a win. A great start. We need to start somewhere and this works for me.
TikTok Threat Is Purely Hypothetical, U.S. Intelligence Admits

“We have nothing to add,” the FBI said, when asked for evidence of TikTok’s actual threat.

The Intercept
@Okanogen @Daniel_Keppler @dgar I know you said something more than “congress has overwhelming evidence” but I already addressed that and you evidently didn’t read it so I’m going to be reciprocal and not read your stuff either.
@MisuseCase @Daniel_Keppler @dgar
I fucking read everything you wrote. The fucking clear evidence is millions of people calling at fucking TikTok's goddamn request. There isn't more clear evidence of influence than that.
Do whatever or believe whatever you want. I'm too old to give a fuck.
I don't suck up for or carry water for Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok or any other corporate social media. Your fucking mileage obviously varies
@Okanogen @Daniel_Keppler @dgar That is a lot of cuss words in one reply are you trying to be scary? It’s more effective if you limit yourself to one cuss word per reply, maximum two.
@MisuseCase @Daniel_Keppler @dgar I read every moronic word you wrote. The crystal clear evidence is millions of people calling at TikTok's request. There isn't more clear evidence of influence than that.
Do whatever or believe whatever you want. I'm too old to care what you think.
I don't suck up for or carry water for Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok or any other corporate social media. Your mileage obviously varies
@MisuseCase @Daniel_Keppler @dgar Thank you for your absolutely justified criticism. I should have thought this one out more carefully. My apologies. Given the current threats of white supremacists and christofascists trying and sometimes succeeding in getting control of key state and federal positions, the absolute security of our personal data is more than ever a crucial factor.
@Daniel_Keppler @dgar We should be advocating for laws like California’s recently amended privacy law which lets residents permanently remove themselves from data broker records - this undermines the business model for collecting and selling our personal data without our consent.
@Daniel_Keppler @dgar i’m not sure I understand this argument. I feel like someone local (a company or government) can do more damage to me with my data than a foreign company or government. I’d have to trust local companies a LOT or have some reason to suspect the CCP has a target on my back to feel otherwise.
@dgar
Now imagine Facebook is owned by the FBI.
@dgar This can become several "threads" about spying and horror stories. ;-)
@dgar ... and that Alexa is not listening "too loud"
@dgar 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂
