This project was for a gift exchange, so I couldn't share it until now. It's a (large!) laptop bag/backpack with 100 LEDs in the front flap arranged in a Fibonacci spiral (inspired by @jasoncoon ) and diffused through a Voronoi arrangement of 3D printed translucent black PETG tiles.

Holy crap, that is *stunning*.

@geekmomprojects the tech is your usual amazing, but I’m a big fan of your fabric choices too — bet the recipient loved both!
@inarticulatequilter thank you! I appreciate you noticing the detail. I used fabrics I had on hand, but the choice of accent fabric was definitely intended to emphasize the circle motif.
@geekmomprojects Ooooh, this sounds so amazingly cool!
@geekmomprojects I love this. It's like dinosaur hide (I imagine).
@ancientjames thank you! It does have a very nice feel to it.
@geekmomprojects This is delightful! Awesome job!
@geekmomprojects @jasoncoon Such a cool design and look! I wonder what people's reaction to it would be if it was worn in public.
@Quinn9282 @jasoncoon I have a lot of LED wearables and do sometimes wear them out in public. I find it really surprising, because I'd definitely approach someone to ask about something like this, but most people tend to ignore it. A few ask questions. It does tend to depend on the setting though.

Love it — A bag that goes from “cute and casual” to “communicate with extraterrestrials ala Close Encounters“ at the push of a button!

@geekmomprojects Your pieces are all so beautifully finished, I’m jealous of your skill.
@ratkins thank you! I have had a LOT of practice sewing bags, starting when I developed my Bright Wearables line, and have literally seen hundreds, so l, like everything else, it's a matter of practice. I find sewing very meditative.
@geekmomprojects @jasoncoon How do you generate the animation? IE, how do you make it work for very non square pixels in a not-a-grid?
@dascandy42 I'm just using the pre-set animations in a cheap LED controller (like these https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256804794019063.html), but the arrangement of the LEDs behind the tiles makes the patterns look really nice.
@geekmomprojects @jasoncoon That's awesome! are you sharing the plans anywhere? I have tow little girls that would love something similar. :D And between my wife and I we might even have the skills to pull it off.
@[email protected] I wrote up a similar project in great detail in Make: magazine vol. 87. This project uses almost the same technique, with the main difference being the shape and arrangement of the tiles, and the use of clear black filament (Atomic Filament smoky gray PETG) for the tiles, vs translucent white. If you want to make a bag with the Fibonacci tiles, then I can let you have the STL file for the tiles and the pattern that needs to be laser cut or cut out with a vinyl cutter from the fabric.
@[email protected] Also, the LED string for the Fibonacci bag has 3cm led spacing, and clear resin over the LEDs. I'd strongly recommend reading the Make article, and if you want to make a bag with the Fibonacci pattern, I can send you the design files, and a link to buy the LED strings. I don't have an actual pattern for the laptop bag itself, but you should be able to find something similar online.
@geekmomprojects Thanks a ton for all the details! I’ll look up the magazine! We don’t have a laser cutter, but we do have a small vinyl cutter.
@[email protected] a vinyl cutter will work fine for this project.
@geekmomprojects @jasoncoon That's awesome. What did you use for the remote comms? I'm just about to be in need of something just like that.
@mw1cgg It's a standard addressable LED light strip controller with RF remote control, like these: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256804794019063.html

@jasoncoon @geekmomprojects Whoa, this is next level — well done (and would-buy!)

What did you use for the LED array? Individual pixels you placed and wired manually or something off-the-shelf?

@KevinFreitas I used an LED pebble light string that is wound back and forth and to the backs of the tiles (the tiles have small wells in the back to hold the hot glue). The glue serves a double function of holding the LEDs in place and diffusing the light across the tile.
@geekmomprojects Brilliant! Haven’t played with those pearl LED strings but am now shopping… Cheers!
@KevinFreitas The pebble light strings are really wonderful for wearables because they are quite sturdy and very flexible. Enjoy!
@geekmomprojects @jasoncoon ideal to use when biking at night 🚲... Nice!

Was just telling my neighbor how I strive to do more art and electronic components being my medium.

So love what you're doing! I'm inspired (and will likely ask basic questions along the way 🤗)
