I wrote about the genocide in Palestine, and how tech has been silent and complicit.

I can't sleep

I can't sleep. I'm lying in bed every night, and images of Gaza are running through my head. Fathers holding their babies, dead, caked in dust. Bombs dropped on homes [1], on hospitals [2], on schools [3]. Tens of thousands of dead [4] in indiscriminate bombings [5]. Children crying, pulling

Paul Biggar
In it, I call out my investors who are whitewashing the genocide and promoting Israeli talking points while Israel bombs and murders innocent civilians.

@paulbiggar Thank you so very much for writing this. I can't articulate how much it means seeing someone with direct ties stand up to these VCs and holding them accountable for their harmful actions and reckless propaganda πŸ™ πŸ‡΅πŸ‡Έ

@paulbiggar

Wow, deeply, deeply personal. Thanks.

β€œI wasn't ready to see that my friends are Brownshirts. That they actively cheer on the genocide. The anger, the desire – the need even – for retribution against innocent civilians. I wasn't ready for my friends being camp guards, party officials, propagandists.”

β€œThe propaganda is real, and organized, and obvious. Posting about antisemitism in universities to cover indiscriminate bombing of civilians -- have you no shame. Repeating Israeli claims which have no proof, and no credibility. Keeping the discussion anywhere except on Palestinians being murdered in Gaza. Denying the number of dead because the numbers are reported by Hamas.”

@paulbiggar

Excellent compilation of data in a single post.

You are not alone.

Hugs man.

@Migueldeicaza thank you so much. Means a lot to know there's many in tech on the right side of history

@paulbiggar @Migueldeicaza yes, thank you for writing this up. I feel powerless and alone, and it helps with at least the latter part.

But why do I feel alone? In private conversations, 90% of colleagues agree. Because we feel intimidated to post anything on the topic. Nobody wants to be accused of antisemitism (even if definitely not true).
I tried not to post anything to not offend my close Israeli friend, I know he is suffering, but he stopped talking to me anyway, so whatever. Β―\_(ツ)_/Β―

@BartWronski @paulbiggar @Migueldeicaza "In private conversations, 90% of colleagues agree"
This is the phenomenon I see at a national level here, where I live. In private, many people are against whatever shit Israel is doing. Yet at the pro-palestine protests, there's a handful of people (and those are tracked and targeted by police, because that's how we roll).
"If it’s not helping, then shut the f--- up."

Palestinian and Israeli leaders of the Jewish-Arab social movement Standing Together are building the basis for a shared future, and they have a message for the US left.

@paulbiggar appreciate you speaking up. Also, I fear you’ll find out what I have β€” it’s even worse than it seems. You *won’t* have torched your career, because they were already dismissing your sincerely-held beliefs. But speaking your truth is its own reward, and I hope you find peace in it.
@paulbiggar like, I called out Andreessen publicly for endorsing colonialism, while sitting on a board with A16Z folks, and…nobody there cared. They see all of the rest of us as either trifles to be ignored or enemies to be destroyed, but they certainly don’t care what we say.

@anildash @paulbiggar People like that don't really care what you think, as long as they think you can still make them money.

Andreesen and his ilk will have power as long as the Tech Heterodoxy requires that the rest of us beg them for money so we can try and build.

@anildash fascinating perspective. Yeah I think this explains a lot of lack of pushback. We're just monkeys to make them money, who really care what the monkeys are saying
@paulbiggar @anildash Seems that is how the richest of the rich live. After all, how many bodies did they have to climb over and up to so elevate themselves? At a minimum, willful ignorance must have been a powerful component (a.k.a. Ignoring and self-deluding when faced by the suffering they cause) in their ascent.

@anildash @paulbiggar I have my own biases here (raised Jewish and living my whole life looking for signs of the next Shoah). And yet I look my ignorance in the face, when supplied contradictory information.

Intellectual honesty seems all too rare these days. It's small wonder that the world is so fucked.

@anildash @paulbiggar For so few to acquire so much, many, somehow, must pay for it.

Statistically, some number of those must pay in blood. Some number do not pay by choice.

Wealth should never be granted at such a cost.

@paulbiggar "Is this what Israel is?" yes.

for those of us who have been attached to the struggle for palestinian self-determination (to greater or lesser extents over the years), you may not see us posting much about it. all our followers already know and the sense of powerlessness is so extreme that posting about it feels like stabbing at an open wound that we can't figure out how to heal.

(my family is originally from ukraine too, so there's too much pain to even say much of anything. all that said, i'm glad you're speaking about gaza, because what's going on is an ethnic cleansing.)

@paulbiggar It is dismaying that despite the scum soldiers documenting their own crimes, it is quite likely that many of them will get away with it consequenceless.

@paulbiggar

Re-boosting as this message is important.

@paulbiggar thankyou for writing this. powerful
@paulbiggar
It's an absolutely horrific situation
@paulbiggar
Reading it I felt an unpleasant chill. Then I realized it's the same kind of feeling I had when I realized my brother and his wife are the kind of people who would be ideal camp guards and Party members. Their support for the genocide in Gaza dovetailed with remarks that us LGBT people don't really deserve rights, and we should be happy we aren't beaten in the streets. It made me understand the despair. I'm incredibly lucky to live where I do - and yet, I live in a place that was almost completely put to the sword by the same kind of hatred that sees tens of thousands killed in months.
@timnitGebru
@paulbiggar thanks Paul for your bravery in speaking out.
@paulbiggar Thanks for this. Shared. I appreciate the feelings, the citations, and how you’ve expressed it all. Fuck.
@paulbiggar
Thank you for such an informative and detailed post. You put in a lot of effort to write this, and it was well worth it.

After reading your piece, I doubt many people will be able to sleep.
@paulbiggar It's a nice thing you did and wrote there, fellow human being πŸ™πŸΌ
@paulbiggar
"When the cofounder of Hamas was 9 years old, his uncle was massacred by Israeli soldiers in the Khan Yunis massacre, along with 274 other unarmed Palestinians. He was shot in house-to-house searches. Others were lined up and executed. How many Hamas' are being created today."
@paulbiggar the silence, the business as usual, is horrifying. I understand that people are overwhelmed and can’t take it anymore, but the apologists for genocide will not be forgiven. They should rot in hell, for all I care. The whataboutists, the zionists. Fuck you all. And the USA: it’s the worst of them all in their blind support of Israel, their denial that this is not mainly a war, it’s mainly a genocide. The silencing of opposing voices, Jewish and gentile alike, are tantamount to the behavior of an Orwellian facist hellstate. #freepalestine #ceasefireNowPermanently
@krampus @paulbiggar Be careful to avoid being as indiscriminate as they are. Don't allow yourself to fall with them.
@paulbiggar there’s so many atrocities.
@paulbiggar thank you for your bravery and integrity.
@paulbiggar thank you for taking such a high profile stand.

@paulbiggar
Beautiful writing. You have my thanks and support, for what it's worth.

My grandfather, a Holocaust survivor, cried when Yitzhak Rabin was murdered and Netanyahu climbed to power over his corpse.

Militaristic ethnocrats stole the Jewish identity and exploit my grandparents' suffering to inflict more suffering. I hate them with all my heart, but most of all with the part of my heart that I consider to be Jewish values.

@paulbiggar Excellent article. I can’t sleep either.

@paulbiggar @aral Thank you for writing about Khan-Yunis. I learned something.

Also, there was no accountability for these soldiers, was there?

@paulbiggar Othwr atrocities occurred as well: rockets and suicide bombings of Israeli civilians sponsored by various Arab monies and powers. And a nation under constant threat from its neighbors. And a huge subset of a people who have been unwanted, hounded, enslaved, and murdered en masse for hundreds and thousands of years: a people who have historically been, at best, tolerated.

The shame of it is that, for decades, the Palistinians have been as the Jews have been for so very longβ€”and, in so many ways, Arabs and Jews are so much alike, as people's. There have been so very many failures of compassion.

All of it is awful.

@paulbiggar

@skaly

It's time for you to read about the other side.
So, read this.

@Edelruth @paulbiggar I'm obsessingly studying that other side for 3 months now. Please stop condescending over me while I actually live through war and you're privileged to not know what it even feels like to wake up knowing your parents may be beheaded for hours while you're waiting for the army to save them from Hamas.

@paulbiggar thank you.

You told the truth.

@paulbiggar It's probably not torched, though it may feel like it now.

How do you sleep with this? It's not the only genocide going on in the world. It's not the only mass of atrocities. You might try https://traumastewardship.com/inside-the-book/ It's not easy.

@paulbiggar You are very brave, a really touching and personal blogpost. πŸ€—
@paulbiggar finally someone had the courage to say what is needed. Great text.
@paulbiggar
Thank you.
Your voice won't go unnoticed
@paulbiggar I totally commend you for writing this. Thanks as well for providing so many sources.

@paulbiggar
Really detailed research and history lesson for me. Might be helpful in understanding why people like me feel so strongly about the bombing and occupation of #Gaza and use strong triggering words like #genocide to describe the actions and goals of those currently in control of the #IDF. @mdyshel
