In 2024, please switch to Firefox

This December, if there's one tech New Year's resolution I'd encourage you to have, it's switching to the only remaining ethical web browser, Firefox. According to recent posts on social media, Firefox's market share is slipping. We should not let that happen. There are two main reasons why switchin

@nixCraft This is wise advice. While nothing on the internet is truly and completely private, we still need to take as many measures as possible to preserve what little privacy that we have.
@nixCraft I already daily-drive Firefox. :)
@nixCraft Go one deeper and use librewolf!
@rollerqueen @nixCraft This. Librewolf is Firefox but better.
@nixCraft librewolf on desktop, mull on android
@nixCraft Been using both Firefox and Thunderbird for years.
@nixCraft I personally use Firefox on pc's and duckduckgo's browser on my phone. But reading the article linked, makes me wonder. https://madaidans-insecurities.github.io/firefox-chromium.html

@nixCraft Floorp is close enough, right? Love the built-in vertical tabs.
@nixCraft I've been using it for 17 years so I can say i'm very comfy with it
@nixCraft I recently switched back to Firefox on macOS and Windows for the first time in years and have been pleasantly surprised at how good it is on both platforms.
@nixCraft Firefox container tabs are pretty much the best thing ever
@samb @nixCraft Indeed!
Account separation without hopping to another browser
@nixCraft I did! And I installed uBlock Origin. I like it so far.

@nixCraft I've been happily using Firefox both on my PC and phone for years now.

I can't live without Ublock Origin and some of the container extensions FF has.

@nixCraft I tried using it for a while, but unfortunately its UX to drag off tabs into windows is still lacking compared to edge / chrome / safari. this something i do constantly and made me move back immediately
@nixCraft while you're at it pressure Mozilla to cut CEO pay, and invest in Firefox, rather than AI
@nixCraft I love Firefox on desktop, and I would love it on Android too if my tabs didn't reload every time I switch between apps.😭
@nixCraft
done
Thanks & solidarity from Tacoma

@nixCraft

an adorable curious shy little firefox, in the style of deep dazzling psychedelic natgeo biomorph 3d fractal art nouveaux deco, utopian landscapes, deep ultra rich fluor colorised, psychedelic surrealism, depictions of inclement weather, motioncgi pbr ray tracing maya mentalray vray final render

@nixCraft Nope, not happening. They had me, they lost me; I tried one more time (when my CPU was limited to 10% of it’s speed) and found them as bad as Chrome at handling that. So sorry… 🥴

Maybe you should have listened when I explained, with lots and lots of feedback, why you were going to lose me, Firefox. 🤭

@nixCraft FF user since early 2000s. Use Chrome only for troubleshooting and Skyvector when in my flight sim. Since going Linux completely a year ago, FF is the default choice in Ubuntu and Pop!OS. Chromium is the default on other Linux flavours (i.e. Raspbian Linux for the RPi)
@nixCraft how about @Vivaldi , heard they’re also on a good track
@dminca @nixCraft @Vivaldi Yeah. I agree with this. The only thing I don't like about Vivaldi is that it's not FOSS. But given that Firefox is run by terrible business practices and missing features, I cannot go back to Firefox.

@nixCraft Hot take from me, but I feel that we should look towards more private browsers in general, Chromium-based or Firefox-based, rather then encourage giving FireFox a monopoly over private browsers (we wouldn't tolerate a Chromium monopoly, why tolerate a FireFox monopoly)

@[email protected] This might be a hot take, but I don't think Chromium itself is the problem, but rather: - Chromium being dominant in the mainstream - FireFox being dominant across privacy based browsers I know Ungoogled Chromium exists, but that's what, 1 project? It seems strange that we flame Chromium for its monopoly over the browser market, but we don't flame FireFox for its monopoly over the "private browser" market 1/2

@nixCraft #Firefox, and #Chromium (non google spyware Chrome version), #Vivaldi, #Falkon. Sometimes #Konqueror, which is where KHTML > AppleWebKIt > Blink came from... go #GPL!!

@nixCraft or at least Floorp it is Firefox based, but it has way more customization or privacy focus whichever you prefer the normal Firefox and all it’s variance. Once sidebars want vertical tabs want no tabs or anything else on screen you can have it round browsing window. It’s yours. Tabs next to the address bar can be done. https://floorp.app/en/
Floorp

Floorp is built on Firefox and was built in Japan and is a new browser with excellent privacy & flexibility.
