I'm over my self-pitying rant.

I will stop reading comments before I stop posting.

I think, though, that helping people understand the First Amendment issues at stake in the gag orders is less important than helping people understand that the real danger to democracy is misinformation and disinformation, and these things cannot be fixed through the legal system.

@Teri_Kanefield I think the rage posters are probably a minority of your readers. Most are probably like me, reading your posts and ignoring the comments because your posts are nice and complete. I hope you don't get too discouraged!
@carolannie @Teri_Kanefield
Precisely my reaction. Always interested in Teri's explanations and points of view. I don't follow her for the comments. Her posts are usually so thorough that there's rarely a need for comments or questions anyway.
@Teri_Kanefield Again, thank you for all you do, Teri! My local volunteers and I feel like we're shouting from the rooftops about this -- I often share your threads and blog posts to get through to people who are way, way to complacent.
@Teri_Kanefield I appreciate your posts and am happy you are willing to continue.
@Teri_Kanefield Please, please, PLEASE keep doing exactly what you are doing. Your patience and wisdom are needed, even when readers choose not to apply critical thought to the situation. Thank you Teri.
@Teri_Kanefield not reading comments is the best self care.
@Teri_Kanefield Your posts are essential to us non-lawyers, Teri! They have been essential in helping us to understand what the heck is going on. #sfba #SanFrancisco #MissionBay #BayArea #Dogpatch
@Teri_Kanefield Thank you Teri, love your work, please don't lose heart over the Worried People. I trust your work above any other. 🥰 💓
@Teri_Kanefield Reading you and people like Ruth Ben-Ghiat keeps me sane and prepared to deal with the tsunami of misinformation. I grew up under a military dictatorship in Latin America so I do have some context, but I sometimes dispair. Thank you for what you do, it is more than necessary.
@Teri_Kanefield Appreciate and respect level heads like your own in times like these. The authoritarians and extremists here and abroad ramping up disinformation campaigns trying to influence our upcoming elections and exhaust us. We MUST be prepared to deal with that reality and deflect/reject it. Don’t waste precious energy reacting to pundits and 24/7 analysis. Supporting democracy our best investment and #1 priority. Critical.
@Teri_Kanefield isn’t it possible to restrict who replies?

@Teri_Kanefield

With all this social media stuff, you are doing extremely hard work, probably for little reward. I (and many others based on what I see in your comments) sincerely appreciate all the work that you do. (Because it is WORK.) If you need to take a break for some self-care, please do so. It's better than burning out.

Meanwhile, here's a virtual hug for you. I hope it helps a little bit.

@Teri_Kanefield people also get triggered for some reason when you tell them that the solution to ending extremism is to vote, keep voting, and don’t stop. Vote in every election from school board to president. Do. Not. Stop! This is how we save democracy. Trials won’t save it.

They want us to give up, that’s the entire game plan.

@Teri_Kanefield ending extremism is probably the wrong word. More like ending what feels like a never ending electoral nightmare where the wrong people end up in office.
@Teri_Kanefield Please don't stop posting. You're a Daughter of the American Constitution. We need you.
@Teri_Kanefield For what it's worth, I appreciate all your posts, rants included 🙂 Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!
@Teri_Kanefield
Unfortunately (and I guess fortunately?) True. Thanks for all your insights on the legal proceedings.
@Teri_Kanefield I agree w/ the other folks here who have praised your work. I'm grateful for what you've written about the need to avoid the negative qualities of social media, and how conservatives aren't the only ones spreading rage & misinformation. Level heads & cool analysis are what is needed in our world. Go team.
@Teri_Kanefield I'd suggest disabling comments on the solo website. Just too much of a target and not worth the time sink. Instead, replace the comments section with a mention of the mastodon account should anyone want to comment. The fediverse has an immune system, solo websites do not.

@Teri_Kanefield

It was certainly not self-pity.

There is rage, of course. But the fundamental is fear. Extremists have become mainstream and are coming for our democracy, coming for us.

There is a real basis for being alarmed but a state of panic is as you say an enemy of reason.

Tribalism is a trap for us too. We need solidarity without tribalism. Difficult.

Edit: Where we get 'news' is a factor but as important is the 'how much' news. If a rest seems like betrayal, that is a problem.

@Teri_Kanefield i think most people just love what you do but love it quietly. You never hear from us.
@Teri_Kanefield I'll just agree with a whole bunch of other people - I follow you for a reason. Your posts are informative and interesting. This far from my field of expertise, I need the expert interpretation but don't often feel that I have much to contribute to the conversation. I read, but don't engage much. Don't let the bastards grind you down.
@Teri_Kanefield
I'm sure some of your followers, like me, don't express our appreciation often enough. You are a dependable source of information and explanation of legal issues, and I would sincerely regret your deciding you efforts are "not worth it". They are, so, so much.
@Teri_Kanefield Thanks for your clear analysis of legal issues. While I personally wish the processes got to a result quicker, they are designed for justice not speed. Thank you for your work.
@Teri_Kanefield your work is valuable and important, and will outshine any haters. I circulate your posts regularly amongst friends who themselves get caught up in rage-inducing simplifications, and they thank me for bringing them back to earth. You may not notice any of this here, but it matters immensely everywhere else.
@Teri_Kanefield Thank you. You have hundreds or maybe thousands of people who rely on you for information who do not comment (me, exception here). Thank you for all you do.
@Teri_Kanefield Think of yourself as a journalist. Yes, many have unrealistic expectations but it's precisely because so few provide the accurate analysis you do. Vastly more read your posts than comment. It's important SOMEBODY provide honest informed analysis.
@Teri_Kanefield I don't comment much because I feel like I usually don't have anything meaningful to add, but I just want to say I really appreciate your analyses as a law laymen. Even though it's not always what I want to hear emotionally, it gives me a lot of context on how the law actually works (or in some cases, doesn't). Thank you for your insight - it's one of the main reasons I visit Mastodon every single day.

@Teri_Kanefield

Rachel Maddow and Peter Strzok advocate for a whole-of-society response to this growing anti-democracy movement.

An over-reliance on a single bulwark of democracy lets fascists subvert each one in turn and create a cascade of failing institutions.

Better approach: multi-front opposition.

1. Support rule of law (oppose the public corruption of the Supreme Court)
2. Go after the moneyed who fund fascism. (Tax billionaires. Stop tax evasion & the underfunding of the IRS)

1/2

2/2
3. Provide transparency on the threat funding from overseas, especially from Russia, China, and the Middle East

4. Support journalism and public access to truthful information

5. Public service announcements about disinformation. Educate the public on how malign influence campaigns work, are funded, & spread.

6. Voting, registration drives, lawsuits against voter suppression. Massive voter turnout

7. Recognition that attacks on civil rights & education are disenfranchisement schemes
