My daughter: "Everyone's so amazed that every snowflake's different, but no one cares that every potato is different."
@KennyPark this is going to stick with me and coke out at inopportune times. So thanks !
@KennyPark Funny story... a few years back I had two potatoes, one of which looked like Jesus and the other looked like Elvis. Turns out I was just looking at the same potato from different angles.
@jmhorner
There's a religion there to be monetised
@HamishMack @jmhorner Primus can provide the church music. Poster by Chris Shaw.
@jmhorner @KennyPark As a Latvian I must reply with this
@KennyPark it would be so much funnier if cranky ppl went around saying "well aren't you just a special potato" instead of "snowflake"

@jimdoppke
In danish, if you've had good fortune by luck rather than by skill or effort, you might be told you're a "lucky potato".

@KennyPark

@notsoloud @jimdoppke Definitely using that from now on.
@KennyPark this is profound, and also prompted a mental image of a small child carefully inspecting a bag of potatoes just before making this observation.
@Pajof @KennyPark Quick. Hand that kid a can of Pringles.
@KennyPark to your stomach, all potatoes are mashed
@KennyPark I didn't know they're all different. That's very cool.
@KennyPark It's the eyes. They're, unnerving.
@KennyPark Well, it doesn't rain potatoes, does it?
@abstract_tesseract @KennyPark
For my wife! She's growing a potato in a glass, on the window sill.
@KennyPark it's the snowflake symmetry. Every snowflake crystal has 3 or 6-fold symmetry and yet they still have huge diversity. Much more surprising and beautiful than random potato lumps.
@kevinjardine
Does the symmetry suggest that it would be more likely to have copies of snowflakes rather than unique patterns?
Trying to understand.
@lumpenpro Symmetry suggests to me that there should only be a few designs as symmetry is a huge restriction. But miraculously there are still huge numbers of different designs, all beautiful because of the symmetry.

@KennyPark

My son: "If the many-universes theory is true, does that mean there's a universe where it isn't?"

He was eight years old.

@stevensrmiller @KennyPark Tell him that would be a pocket universe where multiverse physics don't apply.

@yuki2501 @KennyPark

I'd try that, but he's 21 now. Gawdnose what he'd say back to me at this point.

@stevensrmiller Kids are so much smarter than we realize. You’re a very blessed dad. 🥂

@MiriShuli

Yeah, he's pretty cool. Doesn't think as much of me, but I suspect that will come later, as it often does. I didn't raise him so he could praise me, after all.

@KennyPark
Last time I was out in a potato storm, I didn't want to hang around and check for identical potatoes coming down.
@KennyPark
In the same way people eat chickens but not so many fluffy bunnies.
@KennyPark
Except the cloned potato from Star Trek Voyager Season 6 Episode 19!

@claudius @KennyPark
Going out on a limb. The Tuvix episode?

Edit: Nah one of the later Borg children episodes. can't remember why the potato. Maybe unassimilating the Borg.

@mrblissett @KennyPark it's the one where they find Icheb's parents, I think. It's a science fair where all the children (borg or otherwise) create something and Icheb totally steals the show with some sensor modification he invented. The cloned potatos are the twin brothers entries.
@claudius @KennyPark
Completely forgot the twins!
@KennyPark That's beautiful.
Like a potato.
Are All Snowflakes Really Different? The Science of Winter

For most in the Northern Hemisphere, winter is a time for building snowmen, skiing, and hoping for a snow day. Although many of us are counting down the days until holiday break, there is still time to investigate a few winter science questions! Grab some cocoa and your favorite blanket, and investigate winter from the comfort of somewhere warm. XiXinXing/iStock/Thinkstock

@KennyPark To be honest biology feels less deterministic than physics so it is kind of expected.
@KennyPark you damn potato liberals !
@KennyPark Its because we take the potatoes for granted.
@KennyPark Every tin of beans is different too.
@KennyPark this is the best thing I'll read all week. Thanks.
@KennyPark she’s obviously a chip off the old spud
@KennyPark I’m glad you didn’t take that in a starchy way
@KennyPark your daughter is very intelligent! 👏👏
@KennyPark Whenever I get to the potato bin in grocery stores I think of all of them fighting for attention, "Pick me. I'm better. I'm flavorful and ready for any recipe you want." The silent chorus of loud potatoes.

@KennyPark every potato is indeed different!

I'm *very* different.
