This is what results currently look like. The sheet is a tad messy rn but I'll clear it up more when the poll is finished.
@galaxydinodragon I've been #Debian since 1999... and party like it!
@emag woah that's quite some time
@galaxydinodragon when the RH 5.2 to RH 6.0 (*not* RHEL, the RH distro you could buy in Borders bookstores) nuked the /home I *specifically* said to ignore on upgrade nuked /home on my DEC laptop, I was through with RH. My punishment has been to be an SA or security guy looking over RHEL & derivatives for 15 years. But I keep pushing Debian and Ubuntu, because I won't learn this lesson...
@galaxydinodragon MacOS? They use BSD Unix base.
@linuxgnome more just so people who don't much about OS could vote easily

@galaxydinodragon @linuxgnome

But... OSX has many features added by Apple that while it has the same base as Free BSD, it can't really be considered to be Free BSD. It's had a lot of the stuff that's never used taken out and a very proprietary UI put in.

OSX has cleaner eye candy than the current edition of windows.

@galaxydinodragon avoiding Windows as much as i can, but there are customers, so what can I say? Linux will always be my most versatile OS.
@galaxydinodragon If the question was "What #operatingsystem would you use if you could choose", the answers would be different
@waltertross well now ik what poll I'm doing next week lol
@galaxydinodragon @waltertross Another refinement might be to allow for exceptions. For personal use I'm 95% Linux but I've never been able to print to my Brother printer so I open up my Windows laptop, which also has a much better battery life than my refurb T480. At work I use Acrobat enough for editing and redaction of multipage PDFs that I'm on macOS, dipping into Windows in my tech support role as necessary.
@galaxydinodragon I have all three plus Android on various devices and machines.

@oakelmash @galaxydinodragon

me too! I view os selection as a "right tool for the right job" situation..

@galaxydinodragon prefer MacOS, have used Windows a lot… have never tried Linux though!
@galaxydinodragon actually all but other, main machines a mac though.

@galaxydinodragon

We need polls where you can select more than one option.

Or poll questions that do not assume combinations are not possible.

@galaxydinodragon Linux on my private machines, macOS and Windows at work. And I have one server running a FreeBSD distro.
@sigmasternchen not gonna lie, macOS makes sense on work environments. Total Windows death!

Hmm, I think Windows is the better operating system for big companies because you have much more fine-grained control over what the users can actually do, which is important if you want to avoid additional work for the IT department. I wouldn’t want to use it on personal machines though. There’s just too much weird stuff in there.
macOS is just a decent OS in general (if you don’t mind a non-free system) with a huge range of supported applications, especially regarding creative stuff. And it’s still a native UNIX, so as long as your workflows conform to POSIX you are good to go.
I still prefer Linux for my own devices because it’s much easier to learn the low-level stuff.
FreeBSD I wouldn’t want to use as a desktop operating system at the moment, as I do use a lot of non-free software that wouldn’t be run without a lot of tinkering.
@sigmasternchen from my experience, macOS is best if you have to deal with creative work, like audio, video, photography etc. Lots of creative software is available on the platform and even Apple has its own software as well. Also the default options are great (for sound-related workflows, at least)
@galaxydinodragon
@galaxydinodragon macOS but gonna setup my linux desktop for games and photos
@galaxydinodragon All of them on different computers for different purposes, but most of my computers run Void Linux these days.
@galaxydinodragon In daily to daily bases I use Windows, for development and coding linux distro

@galaxydinodragon

I'm forced to use Windows for work. In my personal life I use Ubuntu, Debian and QubesOS. And Android on my phone.

I do plan to degoogle-ify my next phone, as my current phone is pretty much at the end of its lifespan.

@galaxydinodragon Use is a vague notion...

MacOS for work, making music and videos
Windows for games
Linux (Ubuntu and Rasbian) for servers and IoT

@galaxydinodragon I use several, for different purposes on different devices.
@galaxydinodragon all of the above?
@halla I'll make future polls multiple choice but for now just pick the one you use most

@galaxydinodragon

This should be multi-choice poll, I use all of them.

@rolle @galaxydinodragon same so I ended up pressing on other
@galaxydinodragon
Linux Mint, simple and it works. Honestly, Windows seems to be getting more and more annoying and buggy with each new update and release.
@galaxydinodragon
Both linux and Windows on two different computer
@galaxydinodragon I MIss the option to choose 2 OS. I use MacOS AND Windows.

@galaxydinodragon

Distro recommendations welcome

@galaxydinodragon 🤔 I feel like I suddenly have a better understanding of #Mastodon / the #Fediverse 😉
@galaxydinodragon
Mint at home, Windows 10/11 At work...
But the main cloud servers run Linux

@galaxydinodragon I use Debian under Emacs, can you add that option too? ;)

(I use Emacs with Debian BTW)

@galaxydinodragon Linux on my Desk. But I mostly use my other devices with LineageOS.
@galaxydinodragon where's the multiple options?

@galaxydinodragon

"Other" because multi-select wasn't available.

@galaxydinodragon
Currently OpenSUSE Leap and Armbian on my servers and Arch on the Steam Deck.

Former Gentoo, CentOS/Fedora and Ubuntu-guy.
@selea

@galaxydinodragon I' gave up Windows in about 2007. After that I used Mac OSX until 2014 then Android, iOS, Ubuntu but mostly Mint and Raspbian.

@galaxydinodragon

Mastodon needs a crowdfunded marketing campaign. Otherwise it'll remain Linux heavy 😁

@galaxydinodragon
The poll should allow multiple selections 😬
Or be more specific (like, in your job for most of the time)

@galaxydinodragon On my main PC I use Windows currently, I plan on switching to a linux distro once Windows 12 is announced.

I also have a Surface Laptop which I use for work, which has Zorin OS installed on it.

@galaxydinodragon It might have been helpful to have a "Multiple" option. I've got 3 PCs, plus 2 Raspberry Pis and mobile devices. 🙂
