Computer keyboards should have a removable crumb tray, like a toaster.
@creature @edgeofeurope they should be open... The 'crumb tray' is the desk itself. πŸ˜‚
@creature in medicine we have all sorts of hygienic key boards.
@JohanDiederik @creature the plastic coating 🀒

@creature

That seems like it should be something that keyboard makers put in automatically by now. Either that or make the back removable with just one or two (not seven or eight) screws or clips.

@aka_quant_noir I made the mistake once of taking out all 18 screws and I lifted the back. All the keys fell out on the desk and it took me hour to get it back together. I'm pretty sure some of the keys ended up in the wrong places. Hence my type-os.
@SteveJB Yeah that's a design flaw.
@creature this is the best take I’ve seen on the internet in some years

@creature also they should be splash resistant.

RIP Corsair k95

@transitory @creature mine's waterproof. I can throw it in the dishwasher if I want to.
@darwinwoodka @transitory @creature 30 years ago I spilled Cherry Coke all over a Mac SE keyboard. I washed it out in the bathtub and it kept working as long as the Mac did.
@creature Definitely the best dumb idea I've seen so far this year and I actually want that as a real feature.
@creature
Yes!
My 7 yo Toshiba laptop is fine, apart from keyboard which suffers from crumbs and pipe ash 😞
@creature can confirm. Most of these went through my beard first. But worth it.
@grumpasaurus @creature today: keto bar, smoked turkey, concentric layers of coffee residues.
@creature the g413 se is open, so you should be able to blow the crumbs off easy.
@creature I never thought of it that way, but now that you bring it up...
@creature ... and a silicone shield to protect the inner works from coffee :p
@creature ...
Now you have me considering if it's possible.
@creature can we call it the "Less Crummy Keyboard" please?
@creature Yay, and I would like to see a centrifugal discharge, like in those fancy ashtrays from the sixties.
@creature
Pyrolyse wΓ€re aber cooler...
@creature @tante capitalism has everything for you. Sure there are Keyboards with crumb drawers 😎
@creature @laurala ABSOLUTELY. this is a fabulous idea. if it catches liquids too, that would be A+ (for all the cat owners & jittery coffee addicts out there).
@creature Yeah, my gag has made it to this sphere \o/
@creature it’s not quite the same, but mechanical keyboards where the switches are installed in sockets allow for the switches to be removed for cleaning.
@creature The million-dollar idea... πŸ₯°
@creature dude, you're a fucking genius! This should be legally required.
@creature ooh yeah. You said something there...
@creature Brilliant mate! There’s an Ecology PhD in there too if anyone’s interested
@creature I saw a keyboard once, that you can "roll up", which was also water proof and hence no crumbs would get stuck inside…
@creature I learned to move away from the keyboard to consume food or drink. It’s an enforced break.
@creature now I am thinking about the ramifications of using canned air on a toaster to get the crumbs not on the tray...
@creature You can just put an IBM Model M in the dishwaser.
@creature , one of the benefits of 10 finger typing, I can't eat croissants at the same time.

@creature

Something for eyelashes and nail clippings.

@creature they make toasters with crumb trays?
@creature Genius. I want that. The closest I know is the keyboard I use that has a special cap design that makes the space between the keys way easier accessible so a) I can clean easier and b) I clean more often because I can see the dirt urgh
@creature why hasn't this been invented yet???
@creature I'd be happy if it were easy to get pet (and human) hairs out.
@creature early in my IT career I had a user who regularly ate over his keyboard and it always grossed me out when I had to fix his PC. It was literally full of crumbs and who knows what else.
@creature when you think about it, the keyboard is the removable crumb tray of the computer
@creature Just turn it upside-down and shake it, then right side up, repeat twice - just like a toaster without a crumb tray!
Why don't keyboards have a removable crumb tray like a toaster?

It's like the abyss under those keys. I think i can almost see an entire sandwich down there. What stops this major development in keyboard technology? Upside down shaking just dislodges the crumbs and get the keys stuck.

ResetEra

@creature so gross yet so true.

That moment when you notice a crumb, and try to flick it away without pressing the key and seeing in disappear into your electronics forever.

@creature Apple used to produce a keyboard that was essentially one giant crump tray.
@rene @creature That is my current keyboard and it is absolutely packed with crumbs. And likely insects.
@colinpurrington @rene @creature i always hope eventually we'll reach equilibrium where the bugs become numerous enough to eventually eat the crumbs at the same rate as they fall.
