GitHub is "The AI-powered developer platform".

Not the "Build software better, together. Powerful collaboration, code review, and code management for open source and private projects." we signed up for years ago. (github's main page from webarchive).

as usual, at first I thought that this fediverse thing is some kind of irony trolling github, but nope, github.com says the same thing, its all for real :/
@fedor lol, I thought exactly the same when I read the bio πŸ™ƒ
@fedor this is why i quit working there.
@fedor
It's never been what they claimed. @Codeberg is what they claim to be.
@fedor @clementd @github I honestly think this is pretty disappointing to see. I could understand it if you were still in the hype cycle of VC investment backed services, but you're not, so I really don't understand the jump onto the AI band wagon.
@thisismissem @fedor @clementd MSFT did spend $10 Bn on an OpenAI investment. Gotta hype it up everywhere 🀷
@cthos @thisismissem @fedor @clementd It's pretty pathetic. They would look vaguely better just admitting they made a stupid investment than doubling down on something everyone can see is at best counterproductive.

@lispi314 @cthos @fedor @clementd even if we consider Microsoft's investment in OpenAI & AI in general a neutral thing (it's not), then it still doesn't make sense: GitHub is about people and projects.

Without people or projects, it'd be pointless. Like, it'd just be random AI generated code of no actual value.

@thisismissem @lispi314 @cthos @clementd but microsoft being an evil corp is not about people and projects.

GH at this point holds Library of Alexandria kind of value - it have implementations of all known algorithms, glue code for all known platforms etc etc.

AI is a way for an evil organisation to convert this value into a short term money.

@cthos @thisismissem @fedor @clementd yes, they are putting into Office, Bing, and GitHub - it is uncertain regarding LinkedIn given what people write there can be indistinguishable from AI nonsense.

@fedor @clementd @github like, could you imagine Wikipedia getting the tag line "AI-powered knowledge platform" or YouTube "AI-powered video platform"?

"AI-powered development platform" so undervalues the developers it isn't funny. It's not the AI that makes GitHub GitHub, it's the people, the contributors, and the projects.

Without the people there'd be no GitHub. AI code generation is an extra feature some may use, not the platform.

@thisismissem @fedor @clementd @github honestly this is just an extension of the classic way that capitalists and economists further the myth of productive capital instead of admitting that all real value comes from labor lol. Here they're trying to pretend that their technological infrastructure and AI algorithms are what give value when none of that even matters one bit without all of the human labor that developers put in producing actual good code.
@fedor I hate ai I hate ai I hate ai I hate ai
@fedor what are all the hot & popular not-githubs these days?
Codeberg.org

Codeberg is a non-profit community-led organization that aims to help free and open source projects prosper by giving them a safe and friendly home.

Codeberg.org

@chrisisgr8 @fedor I'm on a self-hosted SourceHut, or you could use the showcase instance.

Also there's Gitea (or I think its been forked now) with Codeberg being its showcase. Or for larger projects GitLab's very featureful!

Other options include installing Git on some server you have SSH access to, possibly installing CGit for a web viewer. This is the less featureful option!

@alcinnz @chrisisgr8 @fedor Forgejo seems pretty amazing (it's what Codeberg uses. Forgejo is a fork of Gitea), especially with the work being put to make it federated
@fedor so glad that my terrible code is being used to teach robots to write more terrible code

@fedor

Soon, it will have enough input from copilot, to replace users with "full pilot".

#Github #copilot #AI #artificialIntelligence #programming #development

@fedor I'm so glad that I'm migrating to codeberg (for FOSS) and sourcehut (anything else).
@Andre_LA @fedor Yeah, I need to look into alternatives too…
@Andre_LA @fedor Why not FOSS on SourceHut?

@mcepl
@fedor

The last time I saw, codeberg seems easier for contribution.

Short GitHub patch workflow demo

PeerTube

@mcepl

Sadly I can't read this link on my browser (it returns a json), but I suppose it's the e-mail workflow?

https://drewdevault.com/2018/07/02/Email-driven-git.html

In case it is:

Easier doesn't necessarily means better, I also like Drew's method, and I plan to learn it well eventually, but I appreciate codeberg's low entry barrier.

Also, I'm a game developer, and sometimes I share with artists (or any non-programmers) links to the repository, so an not-so-technical navigation helps them.

The advantages of an email-driven git workflow

@mcepl @Andre_LA correct comparison would be with this process: https://spacepub.space/w/9Dfeq3fBXABUQPY8XR4RgU

I for sure can see how github-like workflow could be considered easier.

Live stream archive: reviewing patches by email

PeerTube

@fedor @mcepl

Got the first video working, just watched now, pretty nice, I did a check, and fortunately codeberg doesn't hides the .patch (although not that visible either).

On a pull request, you go on the changed files, and on the options dropdown there's the button to download the patch.

Or just add ".patch" at the end of the URL of the PR.

Anyway, I appreciate codeberg's way, even GH-like can be hard to learn for who is just starting, but it doesn't hides the patch file as GH does.

@fedor I'm not developer so I don't often use GitHub except when I need to download stuff, but this is just absurd.

Worst part? I just checked GitLab as well and it's also saying it's an AI-powered developer platform...

@ChallengeApathy @fedor Nooooooh!!!! I had hoped they’d be better. How naive of me πŸ˜•
@fedor Well, time to move to GitLab

@NullTheFool "GitLab is the most comprehensive
AI-powered DevSecOps Platform." (from gitlab homepage)

GitLab is a VC company with a long track record of evil/horrible decisions.

Sourcehut or codeberg might be a better github alternative.

@fedor @transcaffeine we shouldn’t forget that GitHub is now Microsoft after all
@fedor the writings were on the wall as soon as Microsoft made its move on GitHub.
@fedor this AI-powered term has been popping up everywhere and bothers me so much. I guess it sounds cool but it’s so false. Ai doesn’t power, run or enable your dumb platform. It’s just a feature you slapped on like duct tape on a Boeing’s wings.
Give Up GitHub - Software Freedom Conservancy

The Software Freedom Conservancy provides a non-profit home and services to Free, Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS) projects.

@fedor I am officially moving my code away from there now! I've seen that and I am against it.

@fedor @Codeberg for the win!

I also love Sourcehut, but it's a paid service if you want to put your own code on there (unless you either contribute to Sourcehut's code or self-host).

@fedor fuck, I really wanna switch to codeberg or something. Problem is, for discoverability and OSS contributions reasons I'm still stuck in GitHub :/
@anarchopunk_girl @fedor people say the same about Facebook/WhatsApp, essentially
@fedor it’s sad to see so many companies fall into this hole.
@fedor I'm fed up of AI, but I don't really like using GitLab, not as good as GitHub for my uses unfortunately
@fedor I suppose I could set up on codeburg until a non-javascript-needed option pops up.
@fedor @AmyZenunim I'm not surprised in the slightest. GitHub's CEO gave a talk at our company recently, and when he got on the stage, he immediately just said "AI." and started babbling about Copilot.

Didn't introduce himself, didn't tell anecdotes about his career, didn't talk about GitHub as a company. Only AI.

I lost a lot of faith in GitHub that day.
@fedor My ass is an AI-powered platform
@fedor But it's funny that as much as the term is abused, ppl will still get gatekeepy about it. For example, one time someone objected to my company describing our tooling as "intelligent" on our website, saying that it implies that it uses machine learning. Fortunately, our CEO responded by saying "Either we call all software intelligent, or none of it"
@fedor gross, leaving ASAP
@fedor Really one of those moments where I wish so many software projects used a Git platform other than GitHub.
@fedor Competition does the exact same.
@fedor @coderbyheart Yea I saw this the other day - I nearly posted about it but decided against it, but yes my immediate thought was "I hate it"
@fedor all the "ai is stealing your code" fuss hasn't really bothered me but something spooks me about this. Changes like this are not good indicators of caring about the end user.
@fedor I wonder, if I move my code away to for instance @Codeberg, can I demand they remove my code from their AI? Probably not
@fedor it's because adding "AI" to corporate copy makes line go up. no other reason
