It does come in handy for transferring hoard into storage, moving from one place-to-keep-my-stuff to another, hauling a 7-foot-long recumbent bike to a remote riding location, helping a friend get that new fridge/TV/bed home, etc.
None of which demand that you drive it all the rest of the time. Pffffft
I'm very hostile to renting things, especially if I can anticipate recurring need, which I had when I bought it used.
Agreed.
@breadandcircuses I'm reminded of this classic radio commercial from Grand Theft Auto III:
@bhasic
To be fair a lot of that is down to improved crash safety requirements. On the down side though it means you literally can't legally sell something new that's super small and light like an 80s Kia Pride that only weighs 1700lbs and gets 50mpg out of a 1L gasoline engine any more.
@breadandcircuses Top 5 US auto sales in 2022: 5) Toyota Camry, 4) Toyota Rav4, 3) Dodge Ram pickup, 2) Chevy Silverado pickup, and 1) Ford F-Series pickup. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/g39628015/best-selling-cars-2022/
At my local dealer, base model MSRP for Ford-F150 = $40,225.
MPG = 17/24
Of 7 vehicles in stock, avg MSRP = $61,226.
Median US income: $31,333.

We've gotta be the stupidest people on this planet.
@breadandcircuses the only car me and my husband have ever owned was a tiny little 70’s mini, and driving next to regular cars felt scary in that. One of these though? It would feel like the car chase in Ant Man.
I saw a ‘mini clubman’(?) yesterday, and I swear that was the size of an old Passat estate...
I'm an ex-biker (motorcycles, not bicycles which are what I ride now). We felt the same way, lol.
@breadandcircuses Hey man, some states have pretty rough roads. My Accord has some issues in some parts of the village I live in.
</sarcasm>
@jon404
They did mention suburbs which is a very different environment to a rural village. That said manufacturers used to make small cars for that exact situation as well.
@mnemonicoverload @breadandcircuses
Oh, for sure. I was being sarcastic about "village" as well, mainly because I moved back home after living in Seattle, and hearing people here talk about how big the "tech industry" is in our "growing city" just makes me laugh.
Suburbs, for sure.
@mnemonicoverload @breadandcircuses
I guess that additional context would have been helpful in my previous post =)
@breadandcircuses - have a look at a traffic camera in Denmark. Basically zero pickups and lots of family station wagons and small cars, most with trailer hitches.
Need to haul something home from the big box? They will loan you a trailer free of charge.
Here’s a lovely bit of satire for children from 20 years ago…
gas guzzlers meant to be towing 20k lbs with a virgin hitch ball, and gas guzzlers meant to carry 10k lbs with shiny no scratches beds ...
may be more that they buy them to carry around Confederate flags or run over homeless people ...
