It should be obvious to everyone that when traveling a mile from your suburban home to the nearby shopping center, you *need* a vehicle like this.
@breadandcircuses damn things are as big as MRAPs these days, with less survivability.
@Jeremyinthebluehouse @breadandcircuses and worse downward viewing angle than an abrams, you're more likely to see a small child in front of your vehicle in a tank than one of these things.
@rootfake @breadandcircuses that's good, because tankers are more concerned about pedestrians than the average SUV driver.

@breadandcircuses

It does come in handy for transferring hoard into storage, moving from one place-to-keep-my-stuff to another, hauling a 7-foot-long recumbent bike to a remote riding location, helping a friend get that new fridge/TV/bed home, etc.

@VulcanTourist @breadandcircuses oh yes those 1-2 times a year excursions.
Pfffffttttttt

@CatDragon @breadandcircuses

None of which demand that you drive it all the rest of the time. Pffffft

@VulcanTourist @breadandcircuses it’s my experience that they’re quite simple to rent should one be needed.

@CatDragon @breadandcircuses

I'm very hostile to renting things, especially if I can anticipate recurring need, which I had when I bought it used.

@VulcanTourist something lower to the ground and with a longer bed than these modern pieces of 💩 would be even handier

@breadandcircuses I'm reminded of this classic radio commercial from Grand Theft Auto III:

@HailHodor hahaha me too, I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers the Miabatsu Monstrosity 🤣
@breadandcircuses I did a trip like that today. I used a bicycle.
@breadandcircuses "But there was that one time in 2015 when I drove on a gravel road for many miles!"
@breadandcircuses 🤦🏻‍♂️ why ffs isn’t petrol by now so expensive that no-one would ever think to buy one of those tanks?
@breadandcircuses we live in the country on a dirt road. We do not need one of these and manage just fine with a small fuel efficient hatchback.
@breadandcircuses I just don't. I want one, but much smaller.
@breadandcircuses When I go buy some veggies, coffee and cereal, I always take the M-1 Abrams F-150 ... not enough cargo capacity in anything smaller and what if there are small children in the way slowing me down? I may need to drive over them, so the F-150 Urban Assault Tank is *critical*
@buck @breadandcircuses
For many years, my small town was home to the largest private collection of military vehicles in the US.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_Vehicle_Technology_Foundation
And I knew the founder, Jacques L. Now and then, I was tempted to ask him to borrow one of his armored cars to park next to other oversized vehicles as a hint.
A tank would have been even better, but of course, driving tracked vehicles on public roads is frowned on.

@buck @breadandcircuses the Abrams was a good choice. I drive past a Sherman and I'm pretty sure it's smaller than new trucks.
@breadandcircuses But not just you. Each member of your family that's old enough to drive one, needs their own. Which is why we have urban sprawl and live in suburbs, so we can park multiple pickups between our garage, driveway, and the road in front of our house.
@breadandcircuses It's possible one day I will need a truck for more than a day rental. But I will keep it only for so long as I actually need it, and get no bigger truck than I actually need. These monsters are overbuilt and underutilized male vanity projects.
@breadandcircuses Even the small cars are big.

@bhasic
To be fair a lot of that is down to improved crash safety requirements. On the down side though it means you literally can't legally sell something new that's super small and light like an 80s Kia Pride that only weighs 1700lbs and gets 50mpg out of a 1L gasoline engine any more.

@breadandcircuses Top 5 US auto sales in 2022: 5) Toyota Camry, 4) Toyota Rav4, 3) Dodge Ram pickup, 2) Chevy Silverado pickup, and 1) Ford F-Series pickup. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/g39628015/best-selling-cars-2022/

Of 7 vehicles in stock, avg MSRP = $61,226.

Median US income: $31,333.

Car and Driver
@tinosaurs @breadandcircuses and people complain they have no money for an emergency and cannot afford $4 for gas
@breadandcircuses
Anything smaller is just TOO dangerous - for the person inside.

@breadandcircuses the only car me and my husband have ever owned was a tiny little 70’s mini, and driving next to regular cars felt scary in that. One of these though? It would feel like the car chase in Ant Man.

I saw a ‘mini clubman’(?) yesterday, and I swear that was the size of an old Passat estate...

@breadandcircuses I specifically remember as kid in rural #Indiana making fun of people with jacked-up trucks without a spec of dirt on them. I think we thought of them as kind of "posers"; people who lived in town yet wanted to drive around something meant for like, a logging camp?

@mw @breadandcircuses

I'm an ex-biker (motorcycles, not bicycles which are what I ride now). We felt the same way, lol.

@breadandcircuses can’t get to the 7/11 without one of these monsters who knows what crazyness lurks out there…
@breadandcircuses @DunaBlue2 And they NEVER park between the lines, which means OTHER people around them have to park slightly off, too, creating a crap-parking domino effect.
@breadandcircuses The only thing missing is a battering ram on the front.
It's a pain in the butt being around these trucks in a little car. And REALLY not fun in a parking space surrounded by them. You can't see people coming when you're trying to back out because these things are in the way for several feet (and then you either gotta brake on a dime or let someone honk and swear at you for "not paying attention".
@breadandcircuses
And when your travelling to the local jail to be booked you need load of them and a fleet of motor bikes
@breadandcircuses @stewartvm They just didn't wanna be stuck on evidence locker duty or cleaning out the cells after one guy clogged the throne on purpose in protest.
@breadandcircuses And they say they're opposed to gender affirming care.

@breadandcircuses Hey man, some states have pretty rough roads. My Accord has some issues in some parts of the village I live in.

</sarcasm>

@jon404
They did mention suburbs which is a very different environment to a rural village. That said manufacturers used to make small cars for that exact situation as well.

@breadandcircuses

@mnemonicoverload @breadandcircuses

Oh, for sure. I was being sarcastic about "village" as well, mainly because I moved back home after living in Seattle, and hearing people here talk about how big the "tech industry" is in our "growing city" just makes me laugh.

Suburbs, for sure.

@mnemonicoverload @breadandcircuses

I guess that additional context would have been helpful in my previous post =)

@breadandcircuses Yup! Especially these, that are extra high, so you get more exercise lifting things into them. These are designed "for working", unlike earlier pickup designs that were lower, caused less damage to other vehicles, and didn't require you to lift things so high.
@breadandcircuses i guess ones who do want those pickups dreamt of being a "truck" driver when they were kids, didn't follow through but still want to fulfill that dream while running over school kids etc...

You never know when you MIGHT just have to swing by Home Depot and get a 4' x 8' sheet of 3/4" MDF.

@breadandcircuses - have a look at a traffic camera in Denmark. Basically zero pickups and lots of family station wagons and small cars, most with trailer hitches.

@breadandcircuses yeh but they might need to take their neighbours grannies wardrobe for an urgent hospital appointment one day???
@breadandcircuses There has to be some kind of compromise- I drive a car because I *can't* ride a bike. And yet the bikes-only folks are constantly telling me I have to move to some magical area where there are groceries AND health care services & give up mobility beyond this small area. An enclosed quadricycle is not good enough for these zealots.
@breadandcircuses Not Just Bikes on YouTube has some great videos about this. Including why car makers are pushing huge trucks and SUVs on consumers to save money.
@breadandcircuses @muzikant I love that channel. Also exposed the farce that is "trying to make streets more bike friendly and ends up making them more dangerous for bikes" in Houston. I had to watch his "Why I Hate Houston" vid a few times. And as a native Houstonian, I nodded along to every point he brought up. It's a town built around the car and unless you're downtown and have traffic lights on every block, it's downright dangerous to walk.

gas guzzlers meant to be towing 20k lbs with a virgin hitch ball, and gas guzzlers meant to carry 10k lbs with shiny no scratches beds ...

may be more that they buy them to carry around Confederate flags or run over homeless people ...
