Back in 1985, Carl Sagan told Congress that continuing to burn fossil fuels will increase global temperature, cause climate change, melt glaciers and ice sheets, and cause sea level rise.

His solution: Fewer government subsidies for fossil fuels and use of renewable energy.

@davidho Carl Sagan was a great communicator, but he was really having an off day here.
@stooovie I just think it was a lackluster presentation.
@dx @stooovie To be fair, its hard to get excited about anything involved with speaking/listening to politicians.
@stooovie @dx now look where we’re at. Way to go, Carl 😒
@davidho It blows my mind that we've known for so long and just let fucking capitalism screw us all over.
@denniskoch @davidho Its classic denial. A normal human response to change. (especially when that change disadvantages so many people in power) It doesn't justify anything however, only pushes the fact that the elite are uncaring even to their own future legacies.
@denniskoch @davidho This video cutout is from the 70teens from German Television. Hoimar von Ditfurth was able to explain scientific content in a very good way:

@denniskoch @davidho
Don't blame a general concept but those who profit from it. It's #TheRich who demand and press their privileges to be uphold against those less fortunate and corrupt.

@Ulan_KA @davidho But capitalism will always benefit the private owners of the means of production. The accumulation and protection of wealth are inherent characteristics of the system.

Capitalism is a flawed system because there is nothing in it that requires the owners of capital to be ethical or moral.

The oil industry has known since 1977 that they were contributing to climate change. They then spent billions of dollars trying to convince the world that climate change wasn't real.

Consumers rarely have enough power to make an unethical company change. Exxon, Monsanto, Nestle, JPMorgan Chase are all companies thriving today that have done highly unethical (though legal) things.

Granted, here in the US, we have a political system where the rich have a larger say by influencing politicians through large campaign donations. Those politicians then pass laws overwhelmingly in favor of corporations either through that direct influence or through lobbying.

@denniskoch @davidho
I don't deny, that The Rich use the system of capitalism, but they do so with Feudalism and Communism, too.

It's always #TheRich. They use whatever system of opression there is to maintain their privileges.

Big Oil doubles profits in blockbuster 2022

Big Oil more than doubled its profits in 2022 to $219 billion, smashing previous records in a year of volatile energy prices where Russia's invasion of Ukraine reshaped global energy markets and, in some cases, the industry's climate ambitions.

@Npars01 @davidho

They also were given record subsidies.

Fossil fuel subsidies in 2022 hit record levels, IEA says

World leaders pumped a record $1 trillion of subsidies into fossil fuels in 2022. Subsidies for gas and electricity doubled, while oil subsidies rose 85%.

@Npars01 @davidho 👏👏👏 In our time the fossil-fuels industry is an obstacle to human survival. Nothing less!

Heat waves, floodings, hail storms & other extreme climate phenomena are the results of mindless use of substances, that have been known to kill the climate we've been living with for so long without caring.
Time to tell fossil fuels "Fuck off!" before they tell us to!

@davidho

His testimony fell on truly deaf ears, since members of Congress were very much self-invested in preserving the exploitation....

@davidho If companies and politics know this all since years, it seems to.be a detailed plan, not a lot of mistakes. But what is their motivation, what the main target?

@Andreas_Sturm The motivation for the now well-known Exxon scientific study was to get an impartial look at how long and how much they could keep going with the petroleum profits. They then hid the results from the public and even ran propaganda against activism because that would have also impacted profits. It's about money.

@davidho

@Andreas_Sturm @davidho I think it’s massive underground cities + transhumanism.
Reshape society.
(see my other comment just now on this post.)

BTW—
if anyone has a source for the massive underground cities (well, 10,000 people) that the CIA (or whoever) has been purportedly constructing for the last 20+ years,
I’d love to see it.

@davidho the depressing thing about this is that it's not like he was the only one
@davidho 1985 ! Most of us already forgot this.

@davidho and for more general use: nuclear energy (the video stops before he says it).

Carl Sagan testifying before Congress in 1985 on climate change

@davidho He warned us. And he was far from alone in that.

@davidho … and #exxonknew ExxonnMobile knew since 1970
and
the Oil & Gas trade assoc. knew since 1950
and
there was a newspaper published in 1899 that stated unequivocally that burning coal made CO2 which blanketed the earth and heated it.
(saw this post earlier; can’t find it again)

We’ve know for a LONG time.

The problem:
They have a transhumanist view.
#onepercent gonna live underground cities.

a #greatreset of humanity seems their goal — remake society.
(within 200 years)

@silentashes @davidho

The article you were looking for was 1912 (but there was a scientific paper in 1896 which discussed it - AFAIK that was the first). Referenced:

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/1912-article-global-warming/

Did a 1912 Newspaper Article Predict Global Warming?

A newspaper clipping from 1912 that anticipates the global warming potential of burning coal is authentic and consistent with the history of climate science.

@davidho Back in those days, the oil and gas industry got a 25 percenty tax break called the "depletion allowance" because...well there wasn't any good reason except their powerful lobby.

@davidho What left-wing liberal witchcraft is this? MORE CARS AND ROADS. ECONOMY. LESS PLASTIC BAGS! WHAT ABOUT CHINA. KILL POLAR BEARS SAVE WALES.

Now, these ideas don't really mix together immediately. Let me check Fox News. OMG.

@davidho imagine what the world would be like if they had listened.

@davidho

Just for context: 6 years before, President Carter installed solar panels (renewable energy) on the White House roof: https://yaleclimateconnections.org/2023/02/the-forgotten-story-of-jimmy-carters-white-house-solar-panels/

When Sagan gave this address, they were still up. A year later, they got taken down under the Reagan administration.

The forgotten story of Jimmy Carter’s White House solar panels

More than four decades ago, President Carter said the U.S. could harness “the power of the sun to enrich our lives as we move away from our crippling dependence on foreign oil.”

Yale Climate Connections
@davidho how wonderful our own government subsidized the death of our home planet. Guess they all made a lot of money.

@davidho

Carter knew in 1977.

@davidho @soundstruck too much greed and cronyism in Congress for them to follow his sage advice. 😒

@davidho
This may have influenced the script of the 1991 movie "Naked Gun 2 1/2" which beside all the jokes covers a lot of environmental issues.
Unfortunately the movie seems to be one of the more serious reactions to Sagan's speech.

@klaremitte

@davidho And since 1985 we've released well over _half_ of all fossil CO2 released by human hands.
@davidho We are all gonna die for greed. It's messed up.
@davidho Goes to say the US Congress couldn't be convinced enough to veer away from the dogma that "we can't afford to care." #climatechange
@davidho Why do we have govt if all govt does is enrich its own members?
@davidho his fears about American politics seem to be coming true as well

@davidho if only he had used PowerPoint....

But seriously. ExxonMobil knew in the 1970s.

@didgebaba
Scientists know for much longer.
But who listens to scientists? We learned our voices are most unimportant.
@davidho
