I’m filling out personal information for a doctor’s appointment and these were the suggested language choices.
@matthew I ran into something like that too, it was weird af

@matthew @meetar by any chance is your hospital associated with a university?
@matthew Probably just took the standardized language list and didn't take the effort to prune out the obsolete entries.
@2WaterGuns @matthew Probably ISO 639-2 - there should be Klingon on the list too ...
@matthew start typing “Kli” and see what it suggests. I bet I know their data source for this
@cinebox @matthew please share the data source that includes Klingon!
@matthew That looks like something ChatGPT would do. :-)
@micron @matthew
ChatGPT would get the dates wrong.
@matthew was it an appointment with a doctor of history?
@matthew It's nice when older people are thought of as well.
@matthew Þat's convenient.
@fishidwardrobe @matthew alþough I þink we should bring back the þorn, as we’re no longer limited to the printing press.
@matthew Can one select Klingon?
@matthew Generous of them to include the older generations 👍👍👍
@matthew giese soþe, ic angilde speake eald englisc
@matthew
Pleeeeeaaaaase someone fill out the form in Middle or Old English 😂
@matthew choose old, just for funsies. What does that change about the doctor visiting experience, I wonder? 🤔
@pandakaebi @matthew There are phone-based interpreter services available for offices that need to care for someone who doesn't speak the same language(s) as the doctor/nurse/medtech. This field would help the office be prepared for that, but I doubt they have medical interpreters for old English, though it would be impressive... 🤔
@pandakaebi @matthew he’d probably mostly check the balance of your humors
@matthew I wonder if language choice also rolls back associated treatments and payment options?
@AlexanderMars @matthew A blood-letting would cost but a few farthings.
@AlexanderMars @matthew like paying for cupping and bloodletting with a chicken?
@Permacultureandpolitics @matthew it would be a lot cheaper than my co-pay!
@matthew for when you get the Bubonic Plague and need a doctor with experience
@matthew Ooh, I think it may be using the same list as this one that I had to fill out once https://chaos.social/@pb/109830866291605476
Philipp (@[email protected])

Attached: 4 images This form wants me to specify my native language and instead of a free-form text field, the designers chose a combo box. It comes with options for Latin, Klingon and eighth-century German. Not Spanish though.

@matthew Pick Old English, and you get a complimentary leeching!

I’d have gone for Old English and brushed up on Chaucer.

@matthew

@matthew @Gargron when you choose old English they treat you with leeches
@matthew I'm going to want to meet that interpreter
@matthew @ingalls You don’t really want to deny medical care to time travellers, do you?
@matthew
You: apothecary, apothecary, it doth hurtest me so when I doest thusly.
Apothecary: well verily, doest thou not thusly.
@matthew That's hilarious.I hope you went with Old English. Maybe your appt confirmation arrives on a parchment scroll 😋

@matthew

Is your doctor a gerontologist? 😕

@matthew if you pick the wrong one will you end up getting a blood letting?
@matthew Oh please, please, pick Middle English.
@matthew i really hope you chose “Old” - would love to see those translated emails sent your way

@matthew

hwa andcwiss beodan þu?

@matthew ooh, at last...my degree is of use in the real world!!!!

@matthew
Perhaps English, Olde? Or even Latin which would have covered the Roman occupation period and can be useful in a Doctor's office.

@glightly

@matthew that looks like the same set of languages they use in the #OpenLibrary! Perhaps someone’s nabbed a set of languages meant for *books* and strapped it to a place that needs spoken locales not knowing the difference 😅
@matthew I’m going to go out on a limb and say that choosing Old English confines your treatment options to leaches, horse piss poultices and amputations.
