This is the last day of my Twitter account. I have over 52K followers there, but I can't remain on a platform that pays people like Andrew Tate to post. I do this knowing it significant limits my reach in the academic community, but the standard you walk past is the one you accept.
@thesiswhisperer Hi Inger a big move. Pleased you're here. I miss my quality twitter community.
@princelysum me too - my community has scattered and a lot just disappeared. It's sad
@thesiswhisperer Hard to credit that anyone would purchase such a valuable product then destroy it. Do you reckon the Twitter name is available now [facetious]
@princelysum now that he's divorced the name perhaps the brand integrity will return. Irony!
@thesiswhisperer ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿพ
@thesiswhisperer The oligarch is trying his best to destroy the X-site, so we'd all have had to move out anyway.
@lalitpatnaik indeed... he doesn't want us there - he could not have been plainer
@lalitpatnaik @thesiswhisperer Elmo has destroyed WuffWuff (formerly known as Twitter). It has no value now. In ten years is WuffWuff (formerly known as Twitter) forgotten history.
@thesiswhisperer if more people would do this then the costs of leaving won't be so high.
@roderickgraham agree - it's very frustrating. There's a couple of good people who seem really welded on there. I guess I just won't be seeing them anymore ๐Ÿฅน
@thesiswhisperer I left the former bird site about 1 week ago. Was there since 2009. Sad to leave. Very sad, but the X was just too much!
@thesiswhisperer Iโ€™ve done the same. Itโ€™s strange but hopefully we can rebuild the community :-) Iโ€™ve followed
@thesiswhisperer damn, that must be hard. The scattering of the masses is what I'm also really pained by. Twitter was the town square until fucko wanted 'tO mAKe It ThE toWn SqUArE' and ensured everyone pissed of to multiple platforms definitely not the new town square. Power to your arm. Thanks for the sacrifice, and the great advice! Glad you're here at least
@milo thanks Milo - I'm sad about it, but the sense of relief is stronger
@milo @thesiswhisperer Had to double-take our usernames, haha!
@rnilo @thesiswhisperer back in the day when Milo Yiannopoulos finally got his toxic sludge off twitter I wanted to quarantine the handle. Alas. If we're all Milo none of us can be that one. Something something...
@thesiswhisperer
I'm not sure if I followed you over there, but I'm very happy to welcome and follow you here. It's a lovely place ๐Ÿ˜€
@thesiswhisperer I think the academic community is one of the strongest migrations to Mastodon, so it should work itself out. ๐Ÿ‘
@philbetts agree - definitely the best place for academic conversation ๐Ÿ™Œ
@thesiswhisperer Sorry about your followers. But thanks for making the tough call!
Levka (@[email protected])

I repost stuff from here to my Twitter account. Over here I feel like I'm preaching to the choir. Over there I'm a least reaching some of the people who refuse to be chased out of the public square by Nazis, MAGAts, racists, and misogynists and expose them to the wonderful resource that is Mastodon. But there's a problem. See: (thread) https://twitter.com/bigpict26315486/status/1690499179385085953

@thesiswhisperer Glad to find you here. I really appreciated your book (โ€œYour Academic Writing Troubleโ€) and have gotten tons of mileage out of doing thesis road maps for papers! Great communication tool with my professors as well.
@multiplicityCT my author's heart is so pleased to hear that, thanks ๐Ÿฅฐ
@thesiswhisperer @phocks Welcome friend. Reach is only one thing. Your impact is profound wherever you go.
@kate @phocks thank you colleague ๐Ÿ™Œ

@thesiswhisperer
I left #TheBirdSite back on Jan 1, but the #Mastodon server I chose started experiencing problems and I felt it necessary to move to this new server this morning.

Fortunately, Masto lets me move my Followers with me, but before that I went from 5K on FB to 1,800 on TheBirdSite to just 270 on "Newsie".

Rebuilding is painful. ๐Ÿ˜ž

@MugsysRapSheet indeed - the promise of being able to move servers is a pretty good one
@thesiswhisperer You might be comforted to know that or research shows that 40-60%of those followers are most likely bots or abondoned accounts. If you make it known where you can now be found, the gravity of your influence will most likely pull a good deal of those followers here. You'll also find your engagement will be somewhat comparable.
@mike that's reassuring and certainly lines up with my observation - so much more chatting here compared to Twitter. Do you think advertisers on Twitter know about your research?
@thesiswhisperer Honestly @fingolas has done more work in this area, but here's our work: https://thecanadian.online/?p=167
Journalists, Youโ€™re Walking Away From A Gold Mine - The Canadian Online

UPDATED FEB 9, 2023: Added some great corroborating numbers from Martin Holland @[email protected] Let's time travel back to December, a time when Elon decided he didn't care for journalists anymore and laid down the ban hammer on a wide swath of the press corp. There were headlines (ironically) about the death of free speech on

The Canadian Online - Companion Blog to The Canadian.Social Mastodon instance
@mike @fingolas thanks for all that work - both yours and the research: fascinating. I did go through pages and pages of followers and finding the same thing. A lot of them seemed to leave in 2017 (maybe US politics?) and then still more in 2021 (pandemic?). I think it was even higher than 50% if I count how many seem to have dropped off this year. Still getting a lot of click throughs from there to blog posts, but as someone else said - fighting fascism doesn't come without a cost and I'm prepared to pay it.
@thesiswhisperer @mike @fingolas Now that they've largely quit that "toxic" other place, how
do we encourage #ourABC to embrace the fediverse? it's like the local radio of social media - and arguably as important over the long term.

@mike @thesiswhisperer @fingolas thank you for sharing all this! It confirms my experience, wasn't sure if observational bias

With much smaller numbers I noticed posting a new blog post on Twitter I had dozens likes and retweets but they didn't translate to reads. Here each interaction seems to translate into engagement.

@thesiswhisperer Let's forget ex and move on ๐Ÿ˜‚

@thesiswhisperer

It's been great to engage with you there over the years, and wonderful to find you here. :)

@thesiswhisperer it's why I left too. Anti-intellectual cesspool.

Following you.

@thesiswhisperer @richlv Respect! And thank you ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป
@thesiswhisperer we also have/had active #ALDep research community in former Twitter. Also relevant journals (also bots) and main conference were actively posting there. I am not sure where people are heading after Twitter.
@thesiswhisperer โ€Invetabilityโ€ is one expression of top-down authoritarianism, among other things.
@thesiswhisperer yet you act like a child by announcing it , sad seeing you lose to people like tate.
@NeuraX_42 yeah - it was clear people@like me were not wanted over there
@thesiswhisperer @lisamelton I got over 3k followers there and somehow Iโ€™m afraid to let it go fully.
But then I know many people on it personally who refuse to leave it, despite knowing all the horrible things .
Climate people are in their own bubble there
@takeitev @lisamelton I guess climate activists feel there are doing the hard work over there, but I do wonder if it's wasted energy. Seems it's just full of people spoiling for a fight
@thesiswhisperer
Thats good...
X is a fascist platform....
@thesiswhisperer @djnavarro Got to agree Iโ€™ve not so many followers on Twitter but now only use it for support from companyโ€™s who are not on mastodon.
