Self checkout should include an employee discount.
@MostlyHarmless I would absolutely pay a surcharge for self-checkout so no

@MichaelPhillips @MostlyHarmless

Really Michael?

Market place had 2 people go into a grocery store & get exactly the same items & amounts.
1 person went through a checkout & the other went through self checkout.

The person who went through self checkout paid about $40 more. Why, b/c not all deals were programed into the computer system so the actual cashier was entering discounts the self checkout didn't.

So you are already paying a hefty surcharge I guess.

@MostlyHarmless
👍This is why I refuse to use it! I don’t work for free!
@SNerd @MostlyHarmless I want to spend the least amount of time as possible in the store so if all the cashiers have lines of people with full carts and I have five items, I'm going to self checkout. We all pump our own gas now so what's the big deal with scanning a couple of items at self-checkout? All stores should make them 10 items or less, no exceptions, or ALWAYS have the express lane open with a cashier. But they don't and I don't want to be a prisoner in that store.
@MostlyHarmless it absolutely already does if you aren’t a coward
@MostlyHarmless back in the day, i remember that if nobody was manning the front of the store, people just walked out without paying. if corporate is too cheap to hire and train more workers at a living wage - fuck 'em! also, how come "loss control" never have to do cashier duty or go-backs? i call BS

@MostlyHarmless Shoppers are already on it.

Walmart CEO: 'Stores will close' if theft at retailer doesn't decline

The world's largest retailer likely loses about 1% of its US revenue — or roughly $3 billion every year — to stealing by customers and employees.

@midacre @MostlyHarmless For example, US #inequality has surpassed a 100 year high. It should be no surprise that organized retail theft has risen. I feel strongly that store closures would harm mostly innocent people who do not engage in theft. These communities need investment not abandonment. There are people that can’t make enough with an honest living; this, I believe is the heart of the issue. #Walmart #Target #Thefts #OrganizedTheft
@IanStuart @MostlyHarmless I agree, it would have that effect. In some of the Walmarts near me they have removed some of the self-checkout lanes and replaced them with staffed checkout lanes. Much better reaction, since most of the theft increase has come since they eliminated staffed checkout lanes in those stores. Also it means they're hiring more staff for those lanes.
@MostlyHarmless NOT RECOMMENDED: Saying to the security guard who checks your bag on the way out the door, “If you want some, just ask.”
@MostlyHarmless getting out of the store faster is reward enough for me. I feel like we should get a discount for standing in line waiting for their employee if they only want to hire two of them. We should be compensated for the opportunity cost.
@MostlyHarmless, I don’t disagree, but I remember how painful going through checkout was in the 60’s.
It took forever, and I hated going grocery shopping with my grandmother because of it.
@MostlyHarmless Honestly if they wanted to incentivize people to use the self check all they'd have to do is offer a coupon.

@MostlyHarmless Agree. It’s retailers eliminating their labor costs, passing that labor onto the customers…and retaining 100% of those savings.

Plus, reducing the power of workers to negotiate.

@MostlyHarmless if you have a full cart and there all the human cashier lanes are closed you are legally allowed to shoplift one thing.

@MostlyHarmless I mean, doesn't it?

My friend calls it the "Maybe I paid for it, maybe I didn't checkout".

@MostlyHarmless

Doesnt need the should. And grammar requires the s on includes.

@MostlyHarmless it would be funny if there would be a discount button on the checkout app, but you still have to push it
@MostlyHarmless @echanda I won’t use them until they give me 15% off. Keep the checkers employed.
@MostlyHarmless I was in line at a self-checkout a few days ago and very audibly said this out loud hoping people would hear and be like "right on." But only my kids heard and then I had to explain what an employee discount is and how self-checkouts are just a way for businesses to try to save money on labor costs.
@MostlyHarmless
Never use them because I don't work for the store. One more way to take away jobs if I'm doing it.
