Walmart CEO: 'Stores will close' if theft at retailer doesn't decline

The world's largest retailer likely loses about 1% of its US revenue — or roughly $3 billion every year — to stealing by customers and employees.

@midacre @MostlyHarmless For example, US #inequality has surpassed a 100 year high. It should be no surprise that organized retail theft has risen. I feel strongly that store closures would harm mostly innocent people who do not engage in theft. These communities need investment not abandonment. There are people that can’t make enough with an honest living; this, I believe is the heart of the issue. #Walmart #Target #Thefts #OrganizedTheft
@IanStuart @MostlyHarmless I agree, it would have that effect. In some of the Walmarts near me they have removed some of the self-checkout lanes and replaced them with staffed checkout lanes. Much better reaction, since most of the theft increase has come since they eliminated staffed checkout lanes in those stores. Also it means they're hiring more staff for those lanes.
