#Phish Summer 2023 #RANKED

Stereotypical tour opener with a lot of mediocre and a few wow moments. In this case, the wow came in the form of an unexpected encore of rarities.

Not a great night for improv, but we’ll slot it in tier 3 on the back of the old school 2001 > DWD and wild encore.

No tentpole jam, but so much great improv and fun playing throughout the night. Puts the lack of good improv on night 1 in perspective. Plus, another encore worth staying for (hope that trend keeps up). Even the Antelope seemed like it had one of the better peaks in recent memory.

Great setlist. And while you can quibble that Ghost never quite got there and the first half of Ruby Waves wasn’t great, you’d have to contend with the second half of Ruby Waves, probably the 🐐 Myfe, top 3ish Tube since 2004, great NMINML, and a surprisingly exciting Caspian.

Ps - Another mid-second set debut. Could tonight be the night Perseid (aka Forward People) makes an appearance?

More up and down and flubbier than the previous two nights with some questionable setlist calls. But if you choose to rank this one higher on the back of the massive Tweezer, no argument.

Switching to tiers bc there isn’t much differentiation. Phish has gotten very good in 4.0 at consistently delivering solid shows via a little of this & a little of that. The difference between the hits, the average, and the clunkers is not nearly as stark as it used to be.

Flubby and at times low energy night with a fairly forgettable 1st set, but then a largely dream setlist 2nd w/ great jams in Carini & Sand.

A brilliant ASIHTOS (🐐 candidate) complete with some mesmerizing drumming kept it off the level of Charleston3, Grand Prairie, and Hampton1 99.

Still, between the tepid first set, everything post-Light in the second, and some out-of-control Trey vocal stylings, it’s one of the weakest shows of 4.0, and I have no doubt it will be joked about for years to come.

Solid show with 3 nice jams and room for more until god—in an unprecedented move—made sure there wouldn’t be a repeat of the previous night’s fourth quarter by forcing the band to pull a Costanza and leave on the high note of Q3.

Hard show to rank. No true tentpole jam, but a lot of “a little of this and and a little of that.” Not a classically great setlist, but it was interesting and unpredictable.

Special shout-out to one of the few interesting Bowies since 2009. It almost crossed over in to need-to-hear territory, but unfortunately the 3.0 and 4.0 kids still have giant goooose eggs next to their stats for Bowies seen.

Took a step back & reworked this a bit. The consistency of clear highlights each show combined with the consistency of not putting it all together each show is making this tour brutal to rank. All-time ER last night & rocking (if light on improv) Q4 but mostly lame S1 until Ass-handed. And while Tube & Ghost in the encore are exciting, each might be the weakest version of 4.0.

GA1 has the better S1. Cuse has the best S1 jam (KDF). Ruby Waves & Tweezer are close but one is Tweezer. Encores are even (though I’d take If I Could). GA1 doesn’t have Miss You so points there. That leaves Ghost, Flew Away, 🐐 Myfe & First Tube vs Suzy, 🐐 Oblivion, Wolfman’s & Possum. Probably give GA1 the edge there.

Going with Cuse #1 for now, but thinking it flips over time.

Gin covered a ton of ground quickly. Otherwise, lot of cringe (especially vocals) & not a lot of improv in S1.

Nothing in S2 got “there” except The Well which had a jam as good as the song is bad. More cringe vocals and several jams cut off as soon as they got going. Still, it’s hard to deny the blazing tempos and raucous energy as the band soared from ripcord to ripcord.

Man, I don’t know. The Carini was incredible and better than anything played Tuesday. But then the show kind of fell off a cliff (and even SYSF didn’t deliver a good jam). First set looks way better on paper than it is on tape. Show wasn’t nearly as spastic as Tues and had less vocal “stylings” but it was also way less exciting.

I don’t know. Nothing matters anyway.

Wave of Hope & Cities gave it more S1 firepower than any other show this tour. Ruby > Plasma > Simple & Melt gave it more S2 firepower than any other show. Not only was it a lot of improv, it was damn good improv—peak after peak after peak.

Despite all odds, a show with Evening Song, More, and My Soul in set opener/closer spots is now wearing the yellow jersey.

Gorgeous DWD but then S1 fell apart for a while. Likely the 🐐 Fuego (topping Mann 2014) and solid Oblivion (if not the MSG monster we were hoping for). Cool segue from 2001->HYHU. Overall, an up & down show with an uninspiring setlist, but the Fuego was so damn good + bonus points for the Fishman Rosie fun factor despite how poorly it was executed.

Weird show to rank. S1 felt like an all-time great first set but is less impressive (though still fantastic) on relisten. S2 felt like a bit of a downer in the moment (non-jammed Sigma & back-to-back breathers didn’t help), but sounds much better on relisten. Gonna put this one a notch above Sat on the strength of S1.

The only debate is MSG1 vs MSG4. While MSG1 **might** have a **slight** edge in improv, MSG4 is clearly stronger in setlist + has a monster encore. Setlist doesn’t factor nearly as much as play, but it counts. If you ding shows like NC1 for brutal setlists, you can’t say it doesn’t matter elsewhere.

MSG4 now wears the yellow jersey.

Weak setlist and while there were solid highlights (like every show this tour), most of those highlights are fleeting and far less impressive on relisten. Hard to argue MSG5 being better than any show above it.

ps - Did some tier adjustments. The biggest is making MSG1 & MSG4 co-leaders. Solid arguments for either being show of tour.

S1 was up & down w/o a big highlight. Best Mike’s since 1.0 & maybe jam of tour. Solid Sand->Crosseyed, but ALBTD killed S2’s momentum w/ Lizards not high-energy enough to get it back. Odd to hold Weekapaug for the encore only to drop an incredibly tame version. Giving slight edge to Cuse & GA1 based on S1s & more well-rounded S2+Es.

Fantastic Caspian. Epic Tweezer. Great Hood. Beyond that, the supporting cast isn’t nearly as well-rounded as the top shows this tour. Factor in ripcords + some unfortunate setlisting, and we’ll go tier 3 and call it a day—though it might be closer to tier Pennsylvania once dust settles. Great show, but the bar is high this tour.

@chopaganda somehow you ranking MSG 5 on the same tier as the Wilmington rain out show makes me feel better
@chopaganda Pennsylvania level? That’s wrong.
@Wolfenhaus Search deep, Wolfie.
@chopaganda @Wolfenhaus List is wrong in all the right ways! Love you Chop🍻Good times in house and from the couch this tour. Can’t wait to be snubbed again at Dicks! 🙌🏼🥰 #phish
@chopaganda Saying “the bar is high this tour” is pretty laughable IMO. Besides a few standout jams, there wasn’t a single truly great or elite show all tour. I’d give this tour a C or C+ grade at best.
@Bandino @chopaganda 7/28 was great.
@Backeasyjim @chopaganda No it wasn’t. It was a really solid show. Not great. Had some great jams but 2nd half of the 1st set is nothing worth listening back to. 2nd set opened with More and MITM and Melt aren’t worth listening back to. That Cities is the best jam of the whole tour though IMO.
@Bandino @chopaganda melt was really good lol.
@Backeasyjim @Bandino Don't get suckered by Bandino. All he does it troll, but he does it without any humor or cleverness.
@chopaganda @Backeasyjim I don’t troll. I just speak truth and disagree with Fluffs. I’m not trying to be clever--just a nuisance to those with bad opinions 🤣
@chopaganda well done. Imo MSG 4 should be moved down, Mann 2 up, and lol at MSG 5. It wasn’t a great show but lumping it with the worst of the Deep South is disrespectful, albeit funny.
@chopaganda change to msg6 under T2b. This is where I have it ranked as well
@FORBIN33 Typo. Love the edit button.
@chopaganda one of my favorite feature here lol
@chopaganda manngled
@chillwig One of the greatest momentum killers I’ve ever seen.
@chopaganda Going back to bed pretending you don’t have MSG4 the same as MSG1 AND ABOVE LAST NIGHT! Chop you are trying to send me and it’s working!! @drewphish can you do something about this?! #phish #triggeredcase
@Stoneycase @drewphish I said what I said and spelled out the logic. If you can’t handle it, go back to the musklickers 😉😜
@chopaganda @drewphish Skoi won’t even invite me to Blueballz.
@Stoneycase @drewphish You’re not missing much right now.
@chopaganda @drewphish I can’t handle another site. Blocked an account here yesterday for posting a year old fake bigot tweet from Ben Shapiro. Then the person got fresh with me for calling them out. Only my second one. IG and Masto about all I can deal with on planet idiocracy. Those two plus official Group Chat Martyr keep me flush with hot takes
@chopaganda @Stoneycase @drewphish Normally, this is where I would say “trust the process” but Chop underrated last night.
@Rosey @Stoneycase @drewphish S1 was not good nor did it have a clear highlight to make up for being so up and down. Sand is not nearly as good on relisten. Set never recovered from ALBTD.
@chopaganda @Rosey @drewphish Look, Mike needs a bone once in awhile to stay engaged. Even tho they couldn’t sing or play his new song, it’s a nod. He has to watch Page’s songs get the set two treatment. This was a compromise. Felt like the show launched at the held note in Moma and basically crushed through crosseyed. MSG4 was flat boring outside the cool setlist surprises. Life beyond the exits? Well earned breather.
@chopaganda @Rosey @Stoneycase @drewphish I really liked it. Beyond the second set opening trio WMGGW was a nice surprise, the Fluffhead jam was killer and I thought Lizards was really well played. I was also high af. First set was ok/decent, pretty pedestrian but not bad. Tonight should crush.
@caravan @Rosey @Stoneycase @drewphish It was a fantastic show. But the bar is high this tour. I just think there are clear arguments that the shows above it are better.
@chopaganda @caravan @Rosey @Stoneycase @drewphish Back in the Bubble took me back to Jennifer Dances in 1997. Seriously. It is enough for me to knock that entire show down a peg. The Mike’s and Fluff jam aren’t enough to save it IMHO.
@chopaganda Listening to Mike’s bubble tea song in noise cancelling cans on repeat would be a proper penance!
@chopaganda fluffhead was quite the ending w huge peaks during arrival. They can’t play weekapaug right now.
@chopaganda I think it goes up on Tier 1 with MSG1 and MSG4 given the merits of 46 Days, the Birds>Halley’s>Roggae>Antelope first set close, easily the best 2nd set opening stanza, ample 4th quarter rarities with The Lizards, WMGGW, plus an excellent encore. Two poor midset breathers don’t take the show down an entire tier when the rest was a relentless dance party.
@chopaganda dude your nailing these esp for not being on your at all. 6 was v fun but didn't hit highs of 4 and 1.
@chopaganda liking this adjustment, truly a toss up at the top. Msg5 is well placed on this list.
@chopaganda no need to rank. everything is top tier. last night was fuggin awesome.
@greatquux Nearly every Phish show is awesome. Some a lot less awesome than others.
@chopaganda i dunno man last night was awesome on a whole 'nother level from, say ten years ago.
@greatquux @chopaganda Well there's 40 years worth of Phish, so that leaves room for plenty of levels.
@chopaganda PIT 2 whould be T3. I understand Set I was average but 2nd is a complete and high level set with a crazy encore. Way better than other T4 shows.
@Dlewis I had Pit2 above the rest but decided to combine the a/b tiers.
@chopaganda Appreciated. But it should be T3.
@chopaganda Not taking that MSG1 and MSG4 on same tier bait. No way. No how. Thank you for your service, Chop!
@chopaganda toldya @Icculus best show i ever bailed on last minute
@chopaganda yes night 4 goes up there and can go toe toe with other classics from MSG in the last few years
@chopaganda MSG 1 set 2 is perfection, IMO, so it still reigns supreme for me. Would put last night in tier 1B
@chopaganda high quality phish this summer with major relisten aspects from T4 and up and even a couple one off jams from lower. We are fricking lucky to have them play this many great to excellent show in one tour in there 40th year

@chopaganda You should award the other three jerseys:

Polkadot jersey for show with the jams with the collective highest peak (ignoring flow/setlist construction or song selection)

Green jersey for the show with the fastest or crispest playing of the composed stuff

White jersey for the best single version of a song that is new to 2023

@chopaganda list looks good. I wasn’t as enamored with last night as most people. I’d probably move last night to tier 2 and move Philly2 up to tier 3a or 3b. Otherwise no real “beef”.
@chopaganda First time I disagree with you all tour. I still like N1 a little better than last night.
@chopaganda Anytime the 1st set is better than the 2nd, it can’t be a Tier 1a show. huge Waste of a Sally, Twist, YEM, and Bowie last night
@chopaganda agree with some other comments that last night ought to be kicked down a tier (or two) evergy in second set dropped, Trey resorting to reading a lot. No real coherent thoughts from Sally on, hence the quantity to mask the lack of focus and feel. Lackluster YEM. Third quarter was decent but paled in comparison to much of the tour. First set was great.
@chopaganda I’m still leaning msg1 after seeing 1,4, and 5. Something about the unique nature of those jams in night one. Fresh ideas plus patience all night long.
@Phreba The more I thought about it, there are enough arguments for both 1 & 4 as the tour leader.
@chopaganda I believe this is proper. No Men’s and Light were sick. And so was LSG? and Jibboo? have to relisten; might have been the chewables talking.
@chopaganda from the couch; great set1. I needed more fireworks in set 2. The 2 breathers did indeed set the tone for spacey chill mode, and there was no recovering until a big peaked Light. I’m of the take that this set 2 will shake out as one of the weakest of the run. Side note I’m not a fan of introducing new songs in the 2 or 3 hole of set 2, but it does command our full attention in that slot, and the new new is clearly a theme of this tour.
@butter I think I’m aligned with most of that. Though the NMINML was pretty stellar
