A Short Rest is a gamble too; hitdice are precious, and there's no guarantee of full HP recovery. Avoiding might fail, but it's a sensible risk. However, going to town is the safest bet - a surefire way to recover HP without losing hitdice. So, pack up your courage and head to town. Play smart, not hard.

To date we have encountered Flying Snake 36 times. We've avoided or fleed (fled?) from it 13 times. We've died of it 7 times. We've killed it 16 times: 5 by melee, 4 ranged (2 improvised), 5 dual-wield, 2 by magic.

Pretty close.
It told us that for a flying snake ranged attacks are at a disadvantage due to house rules, and should only attack melee. Earlier said that we should not buy a second weapon.
