As Twitter destroys its brand by renaming itself X, Mastodon user numbers are again soaring: https://techcrunch.com/2023/07/24/as-twitter-destroys-its-brand-by-renaming-itself-x-mastodon-usage-numbers-are-again-soaring/
TechCrunch is part of the Yahoo family of brands

@Sarahp genuinely do not understand this nonsense. Why toss out a globally recognised brand name? It’s madness.

@aranr
Preparing for bigger and getting rid of all the negative energy that now follows it, I suppose. Glad to not be part of it!

@Sarahp

@pascaline @aranr @Sarahp True, but still - it would have been much easier and MUCH cheaper to just build X from scratch than:

1. Acquiring existing medium for 44B
2. Firing 95% of workforce
3. Alienating 90% of advertisers
4. Gutting back-end services
5. Rebranding established trademark

@hu_logic @pascaline @aranr @Sarahp He did it in the footsteps of Jeff Bezoz buying Washington Post

Its funny to see that both Washington post and Twitter are not doing well now

@aranr @Sarahp

Nobody ever accused Musky of being smart..

Jamie

@jamieannmason @Sarahp that’s the thing though, I think he is smart. But being smart doesn’t stop you doing dumb things. He lacks humility and introspection. Thats his big weakness.

@aranr @Sarahp

I respect your opinion, and thank you for sharing. Mine- Elon is not smart. He has smart people underneath him that make him look smart. Elon has means and opportunity. Other than that, there's no brains or association there.

Jamie

@jamieannmason @Sarahp perhaps. Either way, this ain’t smart.
@aranr @Sarahp that is the part I don’t get either.

@Sarahp try to also join other mastodon instance.. Ignore the mastodon.social domain.

Like mine: https://mastodon.melroy.org what is the point if everybody will move from one centralized server to another? Fediverse is also about decentralizing...

Melroy's Place

Melroy van den Berg from The Netherlands is running the server. Be free to sign-up as well. Just give a good reason during your sign-up.

Mastodon hosted on mastodon.melroy.org
@melroy @Sarahp mostly that you don't need "one mastodon account", you can have many, just like we used to be in 20 different channels on 7 different IRC servers back in the day, each with their own name register. So having a mastodon.social is super useful if you want to be "where everyone else is, mostly, too", and then you find some fun other communities to join later.
@TheRealPomax @Sarahp Well, I'm using the activitypub protocol to connect to communities, people, hashtags, etc. I don't need several accounts.

@melroy Folks who are escaping Twitter do, though. Everyone has their own onboarding track, and folks escaping twitter should be welcomed to mastodon.social if that's the server they found. We want to encourage them to discover mastodon, not chastise them for a choice they probably didn't even make =)

Step 1: get them off twitter/X
Step 2: let them discover the ecosystem,
Step 3: help them find their community once the initial post-twitter shock wears off.

It's a process, these are real people

@TheRealPomax yes, I understand. I just meant that education is part of this process. Awareness.
@Sarahp X-Twitter's pedestrian choice of this bland branding reminds me of John McEnroe's famous screed against a tennis umpire where he shouted “You cannot be serious!”

@Sarahp

Elon: Okay, so in the face of competition from Threads, BlueSky and Mastodon, lets rebrand and show our users that we are fully willing to break their emotional connection to our brand.

MuskFans: Brilliant! Bravo!

@Sarahp I think it's important to keep in mind that the #fediverse is much larger than just #Mastodon. Mastodon is just one #ActivityPub microblogging implementation.

While it's good to see that Mastodon's active user count rise, alternative implementations like #Akkoma & #Firefish have also seen their popularity rise in recent months.

The total number of active users on the fediverse, in the microblogging segment is larger than that 2.1M number as Eugen only reports Mastodon numbers.

@deltatux @Sarahp And stop thinking in term of rivals...
@Sarahp id really like to use mastodon more, but finding people into the same stuff as me is much harder than on twitter :/
@ashenone @Sarahp you can follow hashtags, so it is possible to find people that way.
@Ash_Crow @Sarahp i see how to view hashtags, but no follow button
@ashenone @Sarahp it's this one when viewing the page of a hashtag
@Ash_Crow @Sarahp maybe its because of the metatext app i am using that its not visible?
@ashenone Yes, Metatext doesn’t have functionality to follow tags.
Plus, Metatext project is now archived so it won’t get any updates.
The timeline on Metatext looks good tho.

@Sarahp
It is our responsibility to invite our friends, acquaintances, etc to Mastodon by sending them an email invite link.

Sending an invite is really easy: click "Edit Profile"
-> Invite People
-> click "Generate Link and copy
-> paste the link in an email and BCC: send

+Edit: This is what big data/social do - asks you to connect w/friends by uploading a contact list.

@Sarahp only because I'm a compulsive data watcher: MAU growth plateaued over the last few days and has declined below 2.1m.
@Sarahp @Gargron Today was the day I deleted my account. All in on Mastodon now for my social media posting.
@Sarahp I'm starting to be sure: Musk has been ordered by someone to destroy Twitter....
@Gargron
@Sarahp I can safely predict that Mastodon will become as relevant and popular like Twitter by late 2020s if this continues long enough. I hope this continues, since a few new social media platforms can succeed.

@Sarahp

To be fair, Mastodon is currently seeing about 1200-1400 new accounts an hour right now. Back when elmo rate limited, we saw like 4000+ an hour. This is an improvement over the ~500/hr we were seeing after the last migration. But not as high as when Twitter actually shit the bed.

@Sarahp

We welcome them with open arms!! #twittermigration

Jamie

@Sarahp YOU MIGHT BE RIGHT. I AM LOOKING TO MASTODON, FIRST TIME.
@Sarahp as I am new to twitter and even newer to mastodon. I am trying to find encrypted messaging text.
@Sarahp Twitter X finally broke me. I won't be posting there any more. I hope I'll figure out how to use this site instead.
@Sarahp I will never give Musk my credit card or bank account info. Meanwhile, I'd call the increase, at present, as an "uptick" rather than "soaring", though the latter may be upon us soon enough. At 20k now, I've tracked since last October: It's been up to 100k new signups daily a little, over 60k quite a bit.
@Sarahp Is there a way to follow the number o Mastodon active users?
@Sarahp
One reason why I made a Mastodon account.

@Sarahp
I think he accidentally chose a good name.

In user interfaces X is Cancel. So Musk has made Twitter a Cancel Cult.

Also, from Wikipedia:
An X mark (also known as an ex mark or a cross mark or simply an X or ex or a cross) is used to indicate the concept of negation (for example "no, this has not been verified", "no, that is not the correct answer" or "no, I do not agree")"

Unverified, Wrong, and Disagreeable is all that's left there.

@Sarahp Musk threw away 44 billion for nothing, he could have literally stopped all people starving to death on Earth for 100 year with that money and been a hero forever, but nooo...
@Sarahp I’m only here because Bluesky is slow as fuck with their waitlist
@Sarahp soaring like hwat ? 10k people lol, so pity
@Sarahp I was never an active Twitter user, but I joined Mastodon to give it a try in December. Honestly while I loved the free experience in general, I could see there were still technical issues to be solved. Came back again recently and it’s so much smoother- which I think will help raise numbers again
@Sarahp I personally think that people should keep there accounts just in case things change for the BETTER, but just not use them for the moment.
@Sarahp If you suspected that Twitter’s destruction was deliberate, this should confirm it.
@Sarahp Thank you for continuing to keep Mastodon on the front pages of TechCrunch. 💚
